Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should at least apologise to the people for the nightclub fire at Arpora which claimed 25 lives last week.Speaking at a public meeting in South Goa, the AAP leader alleged that the ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ nightclub did not have requisite permissions, still it could operate because it paid bribes to government officials. “I want to ask Pramod Sawant, tell me one activity that happens (in Goa) without bribing the officers,” Kejriwal said. “This is perhaps the most corrupt government, and the least the chief minister could do is to apologise to the people of Goa for Arpora incident and ensure safety in all the establishments,” he added.The coastal state, known for its scenic beauty earlier, is now “famous for its corruption and the Arpora incident,” he commented.The nightclub, where the tragedy unfolded on December 6, was operating without occupancy certificate, trade licence, building permissions and other licences, said Kejriwal.”Without the building permissions they got electricity and water connection. The local panchayat had ordered demolition of the structure one year ago, but still the club operated because they used to pay ‘hafta’ (regular bribes) to officials,” the former Delhi chief minister alleged. No one can believe that the Pramod Sawant government was not aware of these things, he said, adding that the owners, Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, were “made to flee” the country after the incident.Speaking about development in Punjab, he said the AAP government there is constructing 43,000 km of roads. “I am an engineer. I can do the work. He said the accused initially walked away. But hours later, around 4 am, when Subroto stepped out to a tea stall, he spotted Zuber there again.By 4.30 am, as he returned to his duty post, a sense of unease set in. Zuber was following him!Before he could react, the accused allegedly pulled out a knife, grabbed Subroto by the arm, and lunged. Subroto tried to fight back, but not before suffering a knife injury.In a desperate bid to escape, he pushed the attacker away and ran towards his supervisor Rajkumar Mishra’s cabin.”However, Zuber entered the cabin as well. Mishra was seated on a chair inside. Before I could explain the situation or he could comprehend what was happening, Zuber — upon seeing Mishra — immediately demanded, ‘You are a Hindu too, aren’t you? If not, recite the Kalma’. Mishra was unable to recite the Kalma. Following this, Zuber began repeatedly stabbing him with the knife. Being seated in the chair, Mishra was unable to defend himself effectively,” Subroto said.Fearing for his life, Subroto fled towards the back of the building. He reportedly asked them to recite the Kalma, an important Islamic declaration of faith, before launching the attack.Ansari has been taken into custody in connection with the attack, during which he allegedly questioned the victims about their religious identity before assaulting them with a knife, in what investigators suspect could be a lone wolf-style incident by a radicalised individual.The victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, suffered serious injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. “INDIA bloc parties insulted Nari Shakti in Lok Sabha”: Uttarakhand CM Dhami slams Opposition during one-day Assembly Session NEW DELHI: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday slammed the Congress and INDIA bloc parties during the one-day session of the Legislative Assembly, accusing the Opposition of “insulting women”.Uttarakhand Assembly has convened a special session to focus on a discussion titled ‘Nari Samman, Loktantra mein Adhikar’.Addressing the Assembly, Pushkar Singh Dhami invoked Ramayana and said, “Leaders of parties like Congress, SP, TMC and DMK insulted ‘Nari Shakti’. Hearing the manner in which all INDI alliance leaders were speaking in the Lok Sabha, I could sense arrogance similar to that of Lankapati Ravan. But perhaps our Congress leaders forgot that the end of arrogant Ravan came due to insulting Mata Sita.”Ahead of the session, CM Dhami urged the Opposition MLAs to support the call for women’s reservation.Addressing a press conference in Dehradun, he said, “Today, a special session has been called. Under the leadership of PM Modi, the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill was passed in 2023, and it was to be implemented in the country by 2029. Whatever happened in the Parliament of the country was witnessed by everyone. The path of progress of women was blocked, and I believe that we have gathered here today to discuss this issue. In Uttarakhand, I feel that our colleagues from the opposition should also support this and present their views in the session in a very cordial manner.”Earlier today, Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Yashpal Arya underscored the need for greater representation of women in legislatures. Speaking to ANI, Arya highlighted the significance of the Women’s Reservation Bill and reiterated his party’s support for its implementation.”In 2023, the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed, advocating for 33 per cent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have unanimously supported this Bill,” he said.Arya further stated, “We want the same for the coming Uttarakhand Assembly elections in 2027, but the central government is delaying the implementation of the Bill.”The special session comes in the backdrop of national-level discussions on the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill related to women’s reservation and delimitation, which was taken up in the Lok Sabha on April 17.In the division that took place on the Constitution Amendment Bill, 298 members voted in favour and 230 against. With the Constitution Amendment Bill defeated, the government later said it did not want to pursue the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, which were taken up together for discussion.The Bills aimed to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816, with 33 per cent reservation for women. The delimitation was to be carried out based on the 2011 census.Opposition parties expressed support for women’s reservation but were against the Delimitation Bill. “INDIA bloc parties insulted Nari Shakti in Lok Sabha”: Uttarakhand CM Dhami slams Opposition during one-day Assembly Session NEW DELHI: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday slammed the Congress and INDIA bloc parties during the one-day session of the Legislative Assembly, accusing the Opposition of “insulting women”.Uttarakhand Assembly has convened a special session to focus on a discussion titled ‘Nari Samman, Loktantra mein Adhikar’.Addressing the Assembly, Pushkar Singh Dhami invoked Ramayana and said, “Leaders of parties like Congress, SP, TMC and DMK insulted ‘Nari Shakti’. Hearing the manner in which all INDI alliance leaders were speaking in the Lok Sabha, I could sense arrogance similar to that of Lankapati Ravan. But perhaps our Congress leaders forgot that the end of arrogant Ravan came due to insulting Mata Sita.”Ahead of the session, CM Dhami urged the Opposition MLAs to support the call for women’s reservation.Addressing a press conference in Dehradun, he said, “Today, a special session has been called. Under the leadership of PM Modi, the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill was passed in 2023, and it was to be implemented in the country by 2029. Whatever happened in the Parliament of the country was witnessed by everyone. The path of progress of women was blocked, and I believe that we have gathered here today to discuss this issue. In Uttarakhand, I feel that our colleagues from the opposition should also support this and present their views in the session in a very cordial manner.”Earlier today, Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Yashpal Arya underscored the need for greater representation of women in legislatures. Speaking to ANI, Arya highlighted the significance of the Women’s Reservation Bill and reiterated his party’s support for its implementation.”In 2023, the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed, advocating for 33 per cent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have unanimously supported this Bill,” he said.Arya further stated, “We want the same for the coming Uttarakhand Assembly elections in 2027, but the central government is delaying the implementation of the Bill.”The special session comes in the backdrop of national-level discussions on the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill related to women’s reservation and delimitation, which was taken up in the Lok Sabha on April 17.In the division that took place on the Constitution Amendment Bill, 298 members voted in favour and 230 against. With the Constitution Amendment Bill defeated, the government later said it did not want to pursue the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, which were taken up together for discussion.The Bills aimed to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816, with 33 per cent reservation for women. The delimitation was to be carried out based on the 2011 census.Opposition parties expressed support for women’s reservation but were against the Delimitation Bill. NEW DELHI: The Indian Overseas Bank has issued an official statement after a man in Odisha exhumed and brought his deceased sister’s remains to a branch in Keonjhar district on 27 April, in an attempt to withdraw money from her account, amid reports alleging misconduct by bank officials.In its clarification, the bank issued clarification on the incident at the Malliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank, a sponsored Regional Rural BankThe statement said, “Contrary to certain media reports, bank officials did not demand the physical presence of a deceased customer for withdrawal,” adding that procedures were followed in line with banking regulations.According to the bank, the man, identified as Jitu Munda, had approached the branch seeking to withdraw funds from an account held in the name of his sister, Kalara Munda. Officials informed him that third-party withdrawals were not permitted without proper authorisation. When he stated that the account holder was deceased, the branch manager explained that claims could only be settled upon submission of valid documents, including a death certificate.The bank further stated that the individual, “who was in an inebriated condition, became disruptive and later returned with human remains, reportedly exhumed after being buried a few days earlier, placing them in front of the branch and claiming it to be his sister while demanding withdrawal from her account”. It described the situation as “highly distressing” and said local police were immediately informed.Police reached the spot after being alerted by bank staff. The man later removed the remains and reburied them following discussions with officers.Offering its assessment of the episode, the bank said the incident appeared to stem from a lack of awareness about the claim settlement process and the individual’s refusal to accept the procedures explained to him. It added that there was “no case of any harassment” and that its intention was to safeguard the account holder’s money.“The bank is also in continuous coordination with local authorities for issuance of the death certificate.
