Thursday’s yatras were also subject to fair weather conditions, it stated.Doda district administration urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas and adhere to official advisories rather than relying on unverified social media posts — including reports of cloudbursts and other calamities — until connectivity was completely restored.“All social media users, electronic media channels, print media organisations, digital news platforms, and content creators are advised to verify all weather-related information before publishing, broadcasting, or sharing it. NEW DELHI: Pointing out that a salaried person has a fixed income while the earnings of a self-employed individual keep fluctuating, Supreme Court Wednesday said different methods should be adopted to calculate grant of compensation in road accident cases.A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and N K Singh ruled that the income of a salaried person should be decided by the income tax return filed by him/her in the previous year, and in the case of a self-employed person, it should be the average of ITRs of the previous three years.The bench passed the guidelines on the suggestion of senior advocate J R Midha and lawyer Salil Paul who assisted the court as amicus. The order will help bring in uniformity as high courts have been adopting different approaches to assess income.SC said, “The reason for considering only the preceding year (for salaried individuals) is that the financial impact of promotions is significant and may be reflected in ITR for only that year.”The bench added, “A situation may also arise whereby the deceased/claimant mi-ght not have completed a year in the promoted position before the accident or might not have filed ITR for such period. In such cases, the court concerned shall make a reference to the promotion letter and other corroboratory financial statements.”When it comes to “self-employed/individuals carrying out their own business”, there may also be a situation where only one or two ITRs have been filed. Given such scenarios and the fluctuation of income in these professions, surrounding circumstances are also to be taken into consideration, SC said.SC passed the order while awarding compensation of around Rs 2 crore to the family of a construction businessman who died in a road accident when he was 39.Get the latest India news and live updates. Telangana CM Revanth Reddy NEW DELHI: BJP on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy over his remarks against the party, with BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra saying, “you may try your best to crush the Bharatiya Janata Party, but the people of India have a crush on the party.”The BJP’s response came after Reddy mocked the party’s national president, Nitin Nabin, and dismissed the BJP’s prospects in Telangana. Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Patra termed Reddy’s remarks “objectionable and condemnable” and said they reflected both the Telangana chief minister’s “arrogance” and the “culture of the Congress”.”Revanth Reddy ji, let me state this clearly without mincing words that you may try your best to crush the Bharatiya Janata Party, but the people of India have a crush on the BJP. You can’t do anything,” Patra said.The controversy erupted after Reddy, speaking at an event in Hyderabad on Tuesday, ridiculed Nabin’s appeal to BJP workers to prepare for victory in the 2028 Telangana Assembly elections.”Recently, a guy came here, Nabin or whatever, I don’t really know his name. But he comes here and says the next government is theirs,” the chief minister had said.Referring to the BJP’s long wait to come to power in West Bengal, Reddy added, “You said the same thing about West Bengal. It took you 15 years (to form a government) in Bengal. Your tricks might have worked there because Mamata Banerjee was at the helm. But here, all our guys are ready, and they will crush you.”Responding to the remarks, Patra questioned Reddy’s claim that he was unaware of Nitin Nabin’s identity. “Revanth Reddy, you are the chief minister of a state in India. You are a member of Congress, a well-known party. Do you know who the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India’s largest political party, is? If you do not know the president of the BJP, India’s largest political party, then I feel you are not a competent political worker,” the BJP MP said.Patra also accused Reddy of displaying the Congress party’s “culture of servitude” towards a single family, in an apparent reference to the Gandhi family.Drawing parallels with West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Patra warned Reddy against mocking political opponents. “Just recall the fate of those who have engaged in such mockery. Mamata Banerjee made a similar joke about Amit Shah,” he said.”I remember how Mamata Banerjee’s lieutenants, like Derek O’Brien, had mocked in the same manner, saying, ‘Tell Narendra Modi to resign’,” Patra added, asking Reddy, “What was the outcome? Where does their party stand today?”The BJP leader also rejected Reddy’s claim that the Congress would “crush” the BJP in Telangana. “People did the ‘khela’ in Bengal. We are confident that a similar outcome will be witnessed in Telangana as well,” Patra said.Another BJP spokesperson, Prem Shukla, also targeted Reddy, calling him a “darbari and ahankari” (obsequious and arrogant) Congress leader.”Revanth Reddy, perched atop the pinnacle of arrogance, should kindly open his eyes and see that Nitin Nabin is the national president of the BJP, the world’s largest democratic party, which is in power in 22 states across India,” Shukla said. He further claimed that the Congress government in Telangana would not survive politically for long.”The same arrogance has now taken hold of you. Your arrogance too, will last only for the next few months. Rest assured that the politics of sycophancy and arrogance will meet its downfall,” he said.Shukla asserted that the BJP, under Nitin Nabin’s leadership, would come to power in Telangana in the 2028 Assembly elections. “Mark my words, Revanth Reddy, your sycophantic and arrogant brand of politics is not sustainable. Where does their party stand today?”The BJP leader also rejected Reddy’s claim that the Congress would “crush” the BJP in Telangana. “People did the ‘khela’ in Bengal. The panel met Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday NEW DELHI: The high-level committee tasked with studying demographic changes in the country, including those triggered by illegal immigration, informed home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday that it had finalised a detailed questionnaire to seek relevant information from the states and Union territories ahead of field visits, so as to make its on-the-spot analyses more meaningful and interactive. Making a courtesy call on Shah at his residence here, the committee led by Justice (Retd) Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar shared its decision to visit states/UTs that have witnessed a change in demographic patterns over the years, and gather first-hand, ground-level details from their respective govts and administrative machinery. The committee will be holding interactions with various ministries of the Central govt as well, to hear feedback on subjects and issues related to demographic changes. The home minister, while appreciating the strategy prepared by the high-level committee, directed home secretary Govind Mohan to extend all possible assistance, facilitation and resources to the Committee for its day-to-day working and also its spot visits. Shah requested the panel to compile and submit its recommendations at the earliest. These recommendations, going by the terms of reference of the committee notified in May, shall outline a permanent operational mechanism to identify, detain and deport illegal immigrants; an institutional system to strengthen border management and ensure population stabilisation; and a policy framework to enhance Centre-state coordination in matters related to illegal immigration and the resulting demographic imbalances. Apart from Justice Navlekar, the committee includes the census commissioner, retired IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, ex-IPS officer Balaji Srivastava and economist Shamika Ravi. The high-level committee on demographic changes was set up in May 2026, following up on a suggestion made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2025 Independence-Day speech. Its mandate is to scientifically assess the extent of demographic changes occurring in various parts of the country and the underlying factors including illegal immigration, abnormal settlement patterns and orchestrated migration. The panel has also been tasked with analysing the structural population shifts at the level of religious and social communities, particularly where they deviate from broader trends. The committee was asked to submit its report within one year, analysing the causes behind the demographic changes and laying down recommendations regarding appropriate policy, legislative, and administrative interventions.
