1,057 personnel awarded Gallantry, Service Medals ahead of Independence Day NEW DELHI: A total of 1,057 personnel from the Police, Fire, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and Correctional Services have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals on the occasion of Independence Day, the ministry of home affairs said.The awards include 301 Medals for Gallantry (GM), recognising personnel for acts of exceptional courage in saving lives and property, preventing crime or apprehending criminals.Of the 301 gallantry medals, 272 have gone to police personnel and 29 to fire service personnel, according to the government. The majority of the gallantry awards have been given to personnel who served in areas affected by Left Wing Extremism.197 gallantry medals for LWE-affected areasOf the 301 gallantry awards, 197 personnel from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas have been recognised for their actions. 197 gallantry medals for LWE-affected areas

Supreme Court’s order provided interim relief to the Tamil Nadu government NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a Madras High Court order that had struck down the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to provide government jobs to eligible relatives of those who died in the Karur stampede last year.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran also issued notice to the Tamil Nadu chief secretary and other respondents on the challenge to the High Court order.During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the basis of the challenge to the government’s policy of providing employment to families affected by the tragedy.“Who are you to question the policy of the government? Suppose the sole member died in the tragedy, shouldn’t the government give some employment to son or daughter?” the bench told the petitioner who had filed the public interest litigation, according to PTI.The Supreme Court’s order provides interim relief to the Tamil Nadu government, led by chief minister C Joseph Vijay, which had challenged the High Court’s decision.What did Madras HC say?The Madras high court had on July 27 quashed the government’s orders providing employment to relatives of the Karur stampede victims.The court had held that allowing such appointments could open the door to similar demands from families affected by other tragedies. BCI chief clarifies ‘no inquiry’ into judicial internships NEW DELHI: Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on Friday clarified the Council has withdrawn its order concerning judicial internships following an emergency meeting, saying that no inquiry will be initiated.Mishra said the BCI’s primary objective was to ensure that law students face no obstacles or loss of opportunities while seeking internships in the judiciary.”An order was issued yesterday, but the Council’s meeting was held immediately. The Council discussed it and said, ‘No, there is no need for this’. Actually, the intention is that no student should face any loss in getting an internship in the judiciary. Sometimes, we have seen in the past that due to certain reasons, the judiciary posed obstacles for students regarding internships,” he said, as cited by news agency ANI.Mishra added that BCI’s interests are aligned with the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) Abhijeet Dipke and Saurav Das.”The Bar Council of India aims to protect the interests of the youth of India. I want to communicate to Abhijeet Dipke and Das (Sourav Das) that our interests are the same as theirs, to protect the rights of the students,” he said.”There will be no inquiry; there will be no inquiry whatsoever, nothing of the sort will happen. We have wished the students well for their bright futures,” he added.Mishra also reaffirmed the BCI’s commitment to strengthening ties between the legal fraternity, the judiciary and aspiring lawyers, ensuring that students can pursue their training without obstacles or hardship.”My belief is that students should not face any hardship during their internships. I will coordinate from everywhere so that the judiciary remains happy, the students remain happy, and no one suffers any loss. With this objective in mind, the order was completely withdrawn last night following the meeting. The invitation for the event has been extended by Afghanistan charge d’affaires Mufti Noor Ahmad Noor NEW DELHI: As India and the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan further intensify their pragmatic engagement focused on trade, humanitarian aid, and regional security, the Taliban will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Victory Day in the Afghanistan embassy here on Monday, next week. Victory Day is observed annually by the Taliban on August 15 to commemorate the group’s return to Kabul in 2021, following the withdrawal of US-led NATO forces.The invitation for the event has been extended by Afghanistan charge d’affaires Mufti Noor Ahmad Noor and carries the emblem of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. According to sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the event is not just endorsed by the Indian side but is will also see participation by senior Indian officials.India doesn’t officially recognise the Islamic Emirate, maintaining its position on that issue is in consonance with the international community, although it has allowed the Taliban to take control of the Afghan embassy. However, its position is also marked by pragmatic engagement with Taliban, leveraging its historic goodwill and development presence to protect its security and regional interests. These efforts have been further aided by the dramatic shift in the Taliban’s ties with Pakistan.India and Afghanistan continue to back each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity with India solidly standing by Kabul in the latter’s border conflict with Pakistan.
