The top court’s observations come as the opposition continues to protest the use of pellet guns against demonstrators marching towards Parliament on July 20.”Whosoever committed excesses, took law in their hands should be taken to task”, the court ovserved as per news agency PTI, adding: “Once there is violation of defined protocol, law must take care of it.” The top court said a prima facie case had been made out for a transparent inquiry by a commission and added that the exercise should help frame a protocol for handling such situations in the future.The central govenrment also supported an independent probe, with solicitor general Tushar Mehta telling the court that, subject to the outcome of the inquiry, the government did not believe the protesting students were involved in the violence. He said the violence appeared to have been carried out by miscreants who had infiltrated the protest. The court observed that there was always a danger of attempts to discredit peaceful demonstrations.”Probe is also required to ascertain attacks on 250 policemen, whether it was by students or some miscreants,” the Supreme Court said. On July 19, Punjab Police busted an alleged inter-state cheating racket operating during the pharmacy officer recruitment examination. Seven alleged masterminds were arrested, while 28 candidates were detained in connection with the case. Police recovered 27 battery-operated wireless cheating devices, including pen cameras and real-time dictation tools.The examination, conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences on behalf of the state Health and Family Welfare Department, was held for 454 pharmacy officer posts across 25 centres in Faridkot, Kotkapura and Ferozepur, with nearly 7,000 candidates appearing, as cited by PTI.Police said their investigation found no evidence of a question paper leak or the involvement of any government official.However, opposition parties have alleged paper leaks in several other examinations in Punjab, including the Naib Tehsildar recruitment exam, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class 12 English examination, the Agriculture Development Officers recruitment exam and the Subordinate Services Selection Board (SSSB) Group B Officers examination.On Sunday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann maintained that there had not been a single competitive examination paper leak during the AAP government’s four-and-a-half years in office. A special court convicted Tahir Hussain and four others for the brutal murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma (R). NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Monday pressed for the death penalty for former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and four others convicted in the 2020 murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma, arguing before a Delhi court that the killing was so brutal it fell within the “rarest of the rare” category.Special public prosecutor Madhukar Pandey told the court that Sharma was subjected to a planned and relentless assault before his body was dumped in a drain instead of being taken for medical treatment.Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Pandey said the prosecution’s demand for capital punishment was based on the nature of the crime and the manner in which it was carried out.”Our argument is based on the brutal way the victim was killed. There were 51 injuries on his body, seven of which were fatal. The most shocking aspect is that a heavy sharp-edged weapon was used for one of the injuries. I argued that the entire act was meticulously planned. Here was an unarmed man surrounded by a mob. He was attacked and subjected to a continuous assault. Absolutely no mercy was shown to him. Instead of taking him to a hospital, they simply dumped his body into a drain. I requested the court to treat this as a rarest of the rare case and impose the death sentence,” Pandey was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.The prosecutor further argued that Hussain’s position as a public representative increased, rather than reduced, his responsibility.”I countered that his role as a public servant and councillor actually heightened his responsibility compared to that of an ordinary citizen,” he said.Referring to the evidence presented during the trial, Pandey claimed witness testimonies showed Sharma’s clothes had been stripped off before his body was disposed of.”The evidence and witness testimonies reveal that the victim was wearing nothing but his underwear. All his other clothes had been torn off. A cloth was tied around his neck to drag him to the other side of the drain, from where Ankit Sharma was thrown down. Those pleading for leniency before the court ought to have shown some mercy themselves,” he added.The sentencing hearing is currently underway before the Karkardooma Court. On July 23, Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh directed Hussain and the four other convicts to file affidavits detailing their socio-economic status before arguments on the sentence.Advocate Rajiv Mohan, appearing for Hussain, had sought time to advance arguments on sentencing. The court subsequently deferred the hearing to July 27.Earlier this month, the court convicted Hussain and the co-accused under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, kidnapping, rioting, promoting enmity between groups and unlawful assembly.Ankit Sharma was killed during the North East Delhi riots in February 2020. A special court convicted Tahir Hussain and four others for the brutal murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma (R). NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Monday pressed for the death penalty for former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and four others convicted in the 2020 murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma, arguing before a Delhi court that the killing was so brutal it fell within the “rarest of the rare” category.Special public prosecutor Madhukar Pandey told the court that Sharma was subjected to a planned and relentless assault before his body was dumped in a drain instead of being taken for medical treatment.Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Pandey said the prosecution’s demand for capital punishment was based on the nature of the crime and the manner in which it was carried out.”Our argument is based on the brutal way the victim was killed. There were 51 injuries on his body, seven of which were fatal. The most shocking aspect is that a heavy sharp-edged weapon was used for one of the injuries. I argued that the entire act was meticulously planned. Here was an unarmed man surrounded by a mob. He was attacked and subjected to a continuous assault. Absolutely no mercy was shown to him. Instead of taking him to a hospital, they simply dumped his body into a drain. I requested the court to treat this as a rarest of the rare case and impose the death sentence,” Pandey was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.The prosecutor further argued that Hussain’s position as a public representative increased, rather than reduced, his responsibility.”I countered that his role as a public servant and councillor actually heightened his responsibility compared to that of an ordinary citizen,” he said.Referring to the evidence presented during the trial, Pandey claimed witness testimonies showed Sharma’s clothes had been stripped off before his body was disposed of.”The evidence and witness testimonies reveal that the victim was wearing nothing but his underwear. All his other clothes had been torn off. A cloth was tied around his neck to drag him to the other side of the drain, from where Ankit Sharma was thrown down. Those pleading for leniency before the court ought to have shown some mercy themselves,” he added.The sentencing hearing is currently underway before the Karkardooma Court. On July 23, Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh directed Hussain and the four other convicts to file affidavits detailing their socio-economic status before arguments on the sentence.Advocate Rajiv Mohan, appearing for Hussain, had sought time to advance arguments on sentencing. The court subsequently deferred the hearing to July 27.Earlier this month, the court convicted Hussain and the co-accused under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, kidnapping, rioting, promoting enmity between groups and unlawful assembly.Ankit Sharma was killed during the North East Delhi riots in February 2020. Kejriwal urged the Centre not to ‘mess with students’ NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the reported use of AK-47 rifles during police action against protesting students in Bihar. He accused the Centre of responding to dissent with excessive force.Kejriwal urged the Centre not to “mess with students”, invoking the 1974 Total Revolution led by Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan in Bihar. Recalling the iconic slogan, “Singhasan khali karo, ke janta aati hai” (“Vacate the throne, for the people are coming”), he warned the government against suppressing student protests. “What’s gotten into the BJP? In Bihar, bullets from AK-47s were fired at our students. Are these students terrorists? I want to remind Emperor Modi that under the leadership of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, the soil of Bihar once echoed with the slogan: ‘Vacate the throne, for the people are coming’. Please don’t mess with the students,” Kejriwal said in a post on X.Earlier, Bihar’s Siwan witnessed violent clashes between student protesters and police during demonstrations over alleged examination irregularities and the NEET paper leak controversy. Police resorted to a lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd after reports of stone-pelting. An incident involving the firing of an AK-47 rifle was also reported during the unrest.The Opposition has targeted the Centre over the police action against protesters in Bihar’s Siwan. Police, however, said a constable fired four rounds into the air after he was allegedly surrounded by supporters enforcing the bandh.Constable Abhishek Kumar has been suspended, and departmental proceedings have been initiated against him over the incident.The district administration said the constable was part of a District Intelligence Unit (DIU) team passing through JP Chowk to investigate a separate murder case when he became caught in the protest. Amid the commotion, he fired four rounds into the air from an AK-47 assault rifle. The District Magistrate said the action was unauthorised and inappropriate, noting that such weapons are not meant to be used for crowd control.The development comes as the Bihar government has announced a blanket amnesty for all those involved in the student-led protests over NEET-UG paper leak.The decision follows a statewide police crackdown on July 25, during which 694 protesters were detained or arrested amid demonstrations demanding accountability and reforms in the examination and higher education systems.The protests were called off the same day after then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned. Meta admits that PM Modi’s video was ‘removed’ in error NEW DELHI: Meta on Tuesday admitted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first selfie video on Facebook, meant to address GenZ over NEET paper leak, was taken down briefly due to an “error”.”The content was removed in error and has since been restored,” said a Meta spokesperson, as quoted by ANI.This comes as PM Modi’s video was “unavailable” for a little time on Facebook but was later restored. The video was PM Modi assuring that the government will bring in more strict actions against paper leaks. In a late night video message, PM had said that the Union Cabinet will discuss these stringent measures in Parliament and the government will try to get the Bill passed.His message came amid massive nationwide protests at the time against alleged irregularities in the NEET UG examination. “I know that paper leak is not an ordinary issue. It is very painful for lakh of students and their guardians,” he said.Further talking about the bill on fast track courts he had added, “On the 19th July, the results were declared. I directed the departments today to establish a fast-track court. The departments presented me with the resolution late at night. This resolution, along with the provision for a fast-track court and harsh punishment, will be discussed in the cabinet tomorrow. After the suggestions of cabinet colleagues, it will be finalised, and since the second week of Parliament is starting from Monday, efforts will be made to get that bill passed in the House as soon as possible.”Get the latest India News and Live updates.
