Veteran politician and former railway minister Mukul Roy died of a cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, at 1:30 am last night. The news was confirmed by his son, Subhranshu Roy. Roy had represented Krishnanagar Uttar as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Over the course of his political career, he also served as the 32nd railway minister and was elected twice to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.One of the founding members of the All India Trinamool Congress, Roy was stripped of his role as the party’s national general secretary in February 2015. Veteran politician and former railway minister Mukul Roy died of a cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, at 1:30 am last night. The news was confirmed by his son, Subhranshu Roy. Roy had represented Krishnanagar Uttar as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. TN CM Vijay speaks in state assembly NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay on Tuesday pushed back against critics who had dismissed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as merely an “actor’s party”, arguing that its rise to power was built on years of activism and public engagement. In the 2026 election, we contested alone without any alliance,” he added.Defending his party on allegations regarding Karur stampede, he said, “In Karur, 41 people lost their lives, and the blame was placed on us. Is this how politics should be conducted? “Vijay then listed a series of social and political causes that he said he and his supporters had championed long before launching TVK.”In 2011, we organised a public meeting in support of fishermen and voiced our concerns on their behalf. We extended our support to the Jallikattu protest. We personally visited and supported the Sterlite protest. We provided scholarships and incentives to meritorious students in education. After all this, we launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). We also issued statements opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),” he said.While saying TVK did not subscribe to Periyar’s rejection of religion, Vijay said the party had embraced the broader principles associated with the Dravidian icon.”Periyar’s rejection of religious belief is not something we accepted, but we fully embraced his broader principles. We have always made it clear that we are not opposed to anyone’s ideology. We accepted Dr Ambedkar’s ideals of equal opportunity and social justice. We adopted Kamarajar’s model of honest administration as our guiding principle. We clearly identified who our political opponents were and who our ideological opponents were,” he said.Positioning his administration as one that represents ordinary citizens, Vijay invoked former chief ministers C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran. “Just as there was a government of ordinary people under Anna and a government of very ordinary people under MGR, this government under Vijay is a government of the most ordinary people,” he said.Responding to the governor’s speech, Vijay thanked the people of Tamil Nadu and said serving them remained his government’s foremost responsibility.In 2024, Vijay formally entered electoral politics with the launch of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and began winding down his film career to devote himself to public service. Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant warns of more ‘political blasts’ after Shiv Sena (UBT) rebellion (PTI) NEW DELHI: Maharashtra minister Uday Samant on Tuesday hinted at fresh defections from Shiv Sena (UBT), saying more political “explosions” were in the offing after six of the party’s Lok Sabha MPs joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. He also signalled that the faction’s “next mission” would focus on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs. “The political explosion has already happened twice today, but many more explosion are yet to come. These are not the kind of blasts meant to trouble anyone or defame anyone. Those who accept the leadership of Eknath Shinde Saheb come into Shiv Sena under his leadership and accept his leadership,” he said.”Now the (next mission) is the BMC and the MLAs. We will inform you about it step by step, in due course of time,” he added.Speaking on 3 Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs and one MLC skipping the emergency meeting called by party president Uddhav Thackeray, he says, “First, I will look at the names of who attended and who did not attend. It would be appropriate to comment on that later.”Six Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) Lok Sabha MPs joined the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde in Mumbai on Monday. Sanjay Haribhau Jadhav, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, Omprakash Bhupalsingh Nimbalkar, Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh, and Nagesh Bapurao Patil Ashtikar joined Shiv Sena.In 2022, Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against then Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, walking away with a large group of MLAs and triggering a split in the Shiv Sena. The ensuing political battle eventually resulted in the Election Commission recognising the Shinde faction as the official Shiv Sena. Before the latest defections, Shiv Sena (UBT) had nine members in the Lok Sabha. Only three MPs attended a parliamentary party meeting convened by the Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit last week, amid reports of dissent. Romanch Mahajan, Indian teen killed in horse carriage at Central Park in New York (AP) NEW DELHI: A proposed New York City bill aimed at phasing out horse-drawn carriages has been renamed in honour of 18-year-old Indian national Romanch Mahajan, who died last week after suffering critical injuries in a horse carriage accident at Central Park.The announcement was made by New York City Council member Christopher Marte during a vigil held at Central Park on Monday to commemorate Mahajan. Marte said the legislation, previously known as “Ryder’s Law”, will now be called “Romanch’s Law” in memory of the teenager. “What happened last week is a stain on our city. Allowing horse carriages back on the streets while our family is planning a funeral proves that the city values tourism over human life.” The legislation was originally named after Ryder, a 26-year-old carriage horse that collapsed while pulling a carriage in Manhattan in August 2022 and later died. Animal welfare organisations subsequently intensified calls to ban horse-drawn carriage operations in the city. If passed, the bill would gradually phase out the horse-drawn carriage industry by stopping the issuance of new carriage licences and prohibiting the operation of such carriages from June 1, 2028.Mahajan lost his life after falling from a horse-drawn carriage that went out of control in Central Park. According to his family, the horse bolted after becoming frightened when the carriage driver stopped to take a family photograph.
