Cristiano Ronaldo’s response to a difficult week arrived in the form of two goals, multiple records and a four-word message that immediately became one of the defining moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Cristiano Ronaldo did not need long to make his point. After enduring criticism following Portugal’s frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening Group K fixture, the 41-year-old captain produced a vintage display in Portugal’s 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan and then delivered a message directly into a television camera.“I’m back. I’m back.”When asked afterwards what he meant by the declaration, Ronaldo offered a simple explanation.“Yes, so people do not forget.”The remark came at the end of a night that transformed both Portugal’s World Cup campaign and the conversation surrounding their captain.
A response to criticism
Portugal entered the Uzbekistan match under considerable pressure. The draw against DR Congo had triggered questions about Roberto Martínez’s side, while Ronaldo found himself at the centre of criticism after failing to score and missing opportunities that many expected him to convert.Former France striker Thierry Henry was among those who questioned aspects of Ronaldo’s display in the opener.“The team needs to score, not you need to score,” Henry said after the DR Congo match, criticising what he viewed as an overly individual approach in attacking situations.Ronaldo answered those doubts emphatically in Houston.

Six minutes into the match, he drifted away from his marker and flicked João Cancelo’s low cross beyond Abduvohid Nematov to open the scoring. Shortly before half-time, he timed his run perfectly onto a Bruno Fernandes through-ball and calmly slotted home Portugal’s third goal. The brace helped secure a dominant 5-0 victory and lifted Portugal into a strong position ahead of their decisive final group-stage meeting with Colombia.
Henry reverses course
What impressed Henry most was not one of Ronaldo’s goals, instead, it was a moment that highlighted a different side of the Portugal captain’s game.During a first-half free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, Ronaldo stood over the ball in his trademark stance, drawing the attention of the goalkeeper and defensive wall. Rather than taking the shot himself, he ran over the ball as a decoy and allowed Nuno Mendes to curl a low effort into the corner.“If one thing I wanted to mention, I said, the team has to score, not you, I love what he did at the free-kick, yes, he surprised everybody, it’s a team spirit guy, it’s how you lead your team and you share. Well done. It’s what I like to see, Ronaldo or my Dad.” Henry said on Fox Sports. The former Arsenal and Barcelona forward also highlighted Ronaldo’s movement throughout the match, noting how he adjusted his positioning and timing inside the penalty area.“It’s so important, an offside position, if you cross to him, it can be a tap-in,” Henry said on Fox Sports. “Offside, then you make the team defend the box, then you arrive, not like the other day, he attacks the first post.“And score. It’s what happens when you play like that. Look at him walking, Van Nistelrooy used to do that at Man United, to make sure when the ball comes you’re in front of everyone, and maybe you can score, he didn’t, but it’s a great tactic.
Zlatan’s cheeky response
While Henry praised Ronaldo’s evolution, Zlatan Ibrahimović reacted differently to the “I’m back” declaration. The former Sweden striker, speaking as a pundit on Fox Sports, questioned the premise of Ronaldo’s comeback with a hint of sarcasm and noticeable indifference.“It was the kind of game where Portugal were expected to score a lot of goals,” Ibrahimović said.“His message? I think he never left, so I don’t know why he said, ‘I’m back’.”The comment was delivered with the trademark humour and confidence that has long defined Zlatan’s public persona, but it also reflected the reality of Ronaldo’s standing within football.Even after a difficult opening match, few genuinely believed he had gone anywhere.
More records on another historic night
The victory over Uzbekistan added several major milestones to Ronaldo’s career, his opening goal made him the first player in football history to score in six different World Cup tournaments, spanning 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and now 2026.His second goal moved him onto 10 World Cup goals for Portugal, surpassing Eusébio’s long-standing national record of nine that had stood since the legendary striker’s remarkable 1966 tournament in England. At 41 years and 138 days old, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history behind Roger Milla, while extending his overall professional tally to 975 career goals.Despite the records, Ronaldo insisted the bigger picture mattered more.“It was a difficult, dark week. It felt like I was already retired from football. But I held on, like I always do, because I believe in work more than anything else.”“They said I should retire… but I am here.”“The noise from outside is always like this, but we can’t control it. We keep going and we are united.”For one night at least, the debate surrounding Ronaldo shifted away from age, criticism and retirement talk. The focus returned to goals, records and Portugal’s hopes of making a deep run at the World Cup.And if his message was intended as a reminder, it landed exactly as intended, whether anyone truly believed he had left is another question entirely.
