Five minutes later, England came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock. Nico O’Reilly rose to meet a cross and directed a looping header against the underside of the crossbar. The rebound dropped invitingly for Harry Kane, but England’s captain could only volley over the open goal from close range.

The drama continued deep into stoppage time.Marc Guéhi powered a header towards goal from a corner in the 93rd minute and briefly looked set to win the match, only for Kojo Peprah Oppong to produce a desperate goal-line clearance that preserved Ghana’s clean sheet.Guéhi also enjoyed an outstanding individual performance, completing an England-record 126 successful passes in an international match while drawing seven fouls from Ghana’s aggressive pressing and defensive challenges.
