Two Premier Hospital RDAs Seek President’s Intervention Over Wangchuk Case (ANI images) NEW DELHI: A day after the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of AIIMS wrote to President Droupadi Murmu over the Jantar Mantar crackdown and the continued hospitalisation of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, the RDA of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday also sought the President’s intervention, raising concerns over patient autonomy, medical ethics, the independence of public healthcare institutions and the reported events at Jantar Mantar.In a four-page representation, the Safdarjung RDA said Wangchuk’s medical condition and the need for continued hospitalisation should remain matters of independent clinical judgement, but every competent patient is entitled to dignity, informed consent and treatment in accordance with established medical ethics and the Constitution.The association said reports suggesting Wangchuk, despite being a competent patient, was allegedly not permitted to avail Leave Against Medical Advice (LAMA), if accurate, raise “serious concerns regarding informed consent, personal liberty and constitutional rights”. Hospitals, it said, are institutions of healing and should not be perceived as places of detention except where restrictions are authorised by law and follow due process.The RDA also questioned the security arrangements at Safdarjung Hospital during Wangchuk’s admission. Referring to reports and publicly available visuals, it said restricted access to hospital areas, extensive deployment of security personnel and disruption of routine hospital functioning, if established, warranted an independent examination.It also called for an independent, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the reported events at Jantar Mantar, citing reports and videos indicating the use of force, including lathi charge and tear gas, against peaceful protesters. The association further referred to allegations of intimidation and physical misconduct involving faculty members and students of Lady Hardinge Medical College, saying these too required an impartial investigation.The RDA said such incidents risk eroding public confidence in democratic and healthcare institutions and place healthcare professionals at greater risk of hostility despite having no role in administrative or political decisions. A ruler who appears virtuous, just and devout is more likely to inspire trust and loyalty than one who openly relies on coercion.Importantly, Aristotle was describing how tyrants historically maintained power, not prescribing how rulers ought to behave.Aristotle’s observation endures because it is less about religion and more about the psychology of power. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that statehood was the “foundation” for restoring the Union territory’s special status.The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had declined an invitation from Abdullah’s National Conference (NC) to join a protest in Delhi, saying the demonstration should have focused on the restoration of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir before it was revoked by the Modi government in August 2019.”Some people tell us to talk about (restoration of) Article 370 and J-K’s special status first… I want to ask them what does Article 370 or 371 mean without statehood?” Abdullah told reporters in Srinagar, without naming PDP president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.”Whatever special status J&K would have, be it under Article 370 or anything else, the point is how to share the powers between the Centre and J&K. There is no sharing of powers between the Centre and a UT because a UT does not have any powers. All powers of a UT lie either with the Centre or the Lok Bhavan. All Cabinet decisions go to Lok Bhavan first,” the chief minister said.Abdullah described statehood as the foundation for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.”Where is the state list without the statehood? It is all Union list. That is why we say that to reach there, we have to lay a foundation, then we can build a building on that,” he added.Abdullah further stated that the NC had not forgotten the issue of special status.”We passed the resolution (on special status) on the first day of the assembly session after government formation. It (resolution) is still alive. This resolution can be discussed only after we have statehood,” he said.He also assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the party remained committed to the promises it had made.”I assure my people we stand by our promises and will remain steadfast. Opposition unites for CJP demands NEW DELHI: Several opposition parties came out in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)’s protest againt paper leak of NEET-UG and other competitive exams and their demand for the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.The central government is yet to respond to the demands of the protesters. The development comes a day after the CJP’s “Sansad Chalo” march which witnessed police crackdown on Monday.Which political parties are protestingTop Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal and several party workers staged a protest outside the prime minister’s residence. The party is demanding the resignation of the prime minister and the home minister. “We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability or does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament. PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of India’s youth,” Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and leader Atishi joined the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. Moreover, NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule also joined the protesters.Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee expressed the willingness to join the protests in Delhi if the need arises while also calling for INDIA bloc unity.”We supported CJP from the beginning. If need be, I will visit Delhi and join their protest,” ANI quoted her as saying.”The time has come to be united under the umbrella of the INDIA Alliance against the BJP. I request all parties of the nation and the entire country, and in Bengal also,” she added. Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Dimple Yadav was one of the major political leaders who actively participated in the protest on Monday.Questioning the police action against the protesters, Yadav said: “These children had come all the way to the Parliament building because they wanted to tell the government that your system has fallen ill, it is not working. Those innocent children were beaten with batons, the daughters’ clothes were torn.”What govt saidThe central government has not responded to the demands of the resignations yet. However, talks were held with the CJP and the opposition to pacify the protests.Union minister Jitendra Singh reached Lok Kalyan Marg and spoke with Rahul Gandhi over Congress’s protest.Union minister JP Nadda also held talks with the protesters on Monday when the CJP submitted its demands.”This morning, for the first time, a proposal came from the protesters to hold talks with the government, and our discussions have been ongoing since 11.50am. The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere. An initial verbal discussion was held in detail with their delegation, and they submitted a written petition to me around 4pm. I have requested all the protesters to end their sit-in and assist the administration in restoring normalcy,” Nadda said.Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government acted firmly against those behind the NEET paper leak to safeguard students’ futures, urging states to work with the Centre to eliminate the menace in the national interest. The remarks came at a meeting of the NDA MPs on Tuesday.”At the same time, the prime minister said, to ensure that students’ future was not affected, the NEET re-examination was given priority, conducted successfully, and the results were declared without delay,” Union minister Kiren Rijiju said after the meeting.Protests continued at Jantar Mantar as hundreds of students and their supporters returned to Jantar Mantar a day after their march to Parliament, saying the alleged use of force by police had only reinforced their determination to press on with the agitation. The protest site remained crowded through the afternoon, with students, parents and supporters raising slogans over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and reiterating their demand for education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.Get the latest India News and Live updates.
