NEW DELHI: Dismissing reports of fuel quality issues at outlets, govt Tuesday said additional checks have been introduced by oil marketing companies (OMCs) to detect fuel contamination and adulteration.In a post on X, the petroleum ministry said OMCs were regularly monitoring fuel quality, water ingress and contamination, and that only two cases of chloride contamination had been detected so far.”In addition to the advanced and elaborate testing protocols already in place, further checks have been instituted, including water ingress testing 8-12 times a day at over 87,000 outlets. Over 2,000 samples have also been tested for chloride/sulphide. The ministry said ethanol is stored in dedicated facilities to prevent contamination, its quality is monitored regularly to ensure consistency and every tanker is sampled from both the top and bottom before being accepted.Separately, govt has so far approved Rs 4,687 crore as interest subsidy for eligible ethanol projects under its various support schemes, minister of state for petroleum Suresh Gopi told Parliament Monday. NEW DELHI: Paving the way for expediting a new railway line to boost connectivity to the border area near the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction, West Bengal govt has given its go ahead for fast-tracking acquisition of around 380 hectares of land. With this, work on the 20-km Chalsa-Naxak new line project that was originally sanctioned in 2011-12 is likely to get speeded up.TOI has learnt that the new section, a vital component of the New Jalpaiguri-Siliguri-New Bongaigaon gauge conversion project was placed in abeyance in Sept 2019 due to non-cooperation from the earlier Trinamool govt in the state. NEW DELHI: Govt is likely to allow a levy of 0.25% to 0.4% as merchant discount rate (MDR) or charges on UPI payments above Rs 2,000 made to businesses, while keeping payments made by one person to another outside the ambit.The Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, moved by FM Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday, has sought to remove the bar on banks and payment service providers to levy MDR on notified electronic payment modes. Govt officials said there is no decision on when the proposal will be implemented.Official estimates show that the Rs 2,000 floor will cover 5% of all UPI transactions, but those transactions account for 65% of the total transaction value, and is unlikely to impact daily purchases such as milk, vegetables and groceries or even payments for auto or taxi use. In July, there were 23.7 billion transactions, whose combined value was pegged at Rs 29.9 lakh crore.”Even if implemented, 95% of the transactions will not face the merchant discount rate. In the case of credit card MDR, where the fee is not regulated, it can be as high as 3% of the transaction value. NEW DELHI: Centre Tuesday told Supreme Court that while the proposal to shift NEET from pen-and-paper mode to computer-based mode is under consideration, the final decision will be taken only after getting the report of the Nandan Nilekani-led high-powered task force set up to overhaul India’s public examination systems.In an affidavit, govt briefed SC on measures taken to make the exam foolproof, including stringent penal provisions against use of unfair means and setting up of task force. It was responding to a plea by All India Medical Association seeking a more secure NEET following this year’s paper leak.Govt said: “Migration from pen-and-paper mode to a computer-based mode, whether in single-stage or two-stage exam on the pattern of JEE, is presently under consideration by all stakeholders.” The final approach, it added, would be adopted after considering the task force’s recommendations.It said NTA has migrated seven of its eight major exams to computer-based testing.
