TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee NEW DELHI: The Madhya Pradesh high court has lifted the interim stay on an arrest warrant issued against Trinamool Congress MP and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in a defamation case, potentially adding to the legal challenges faced by the senior TMC leader.A single bench of Justice Pramod Kumar Agarwal on Wednesday dismissed Banerjee’s petition and vacated the stay granted in November 2025 on the execution of the arrest warrant issued by a special MP-MLA court in Bhopal.The warrant stems from a defamation complaint filed in 2021 by former Indore MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, son of senior BJP leader and minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.According to the complaint, Banerjee had allegedly referred to Akash Vijayvargiya as a “goon” while addressing a rally in Kolkata in November 2020. The MP-MLA court subsequently issued an arrest warrant against the TMC leader, prompting him to approach the high court for relief.In his plea before the court, Banerjee had argued that he is a Member of Parliament and was unlikely to abscond. Taking note of the submission, the high court had stayed the execution of the arrest warrant on November 12, 2025.However, during Wednesday’s hearing, no one appeared on behalf of the petitioner.Taking serious note of the absence, the court observed in its order that it appeared the petitioner had lost interest in pursuing the matter.Justice Agarwal subsequently lifted the stay on the arrest warrant, dismissed the petition and directed that a copy of the order be sent to the Bhopal court.The development comes at a time when Banerjee is also facing scrutiny in a separate Enforcement Directorate investigation related to alleged corruption charges.(With inputs from PTI)Get the latest India news and live updates. Telegram founder Pavel Durov NEW DELHI: As Telegram founder Pavel Durov accused India of “punishing” more than 150 million users through a temporary restriction on the platform ahead of the NEET-UG retest, the Centre and cybersecurity experts argued that the measure was designed not to suppress discussion but to break an “active ecosystem of exam-related fraud, extortion and misinformation” targeting over 22 lakh candidates.Durov said the restriction failed to stop leaks, claiming they simply migrated to other platforms, and also alleged that Reliance had disrupted Telegram access outside India through border gateway protocol hijacking. According to material prepared in support of the restriction, Telegram channels with names such as ‘PAPER LEAKED NEET’ and ‘Re-NEET 2026’ were allegedly running extortion rackets, demanding between Rs 14,000 and Rs 25,000 — and in some instances Rs 10 lakh — from candidates and parents in exchange for question papers, which did not exist.Officials also said the platform allowed administrators to edit old messages while retaining the original timestamp. Investigators claimed fraudsters used this feature to alter previously innocuous posts after the exam and these manipulated screenshots were circulated as “proof” of leaks.Neehar Pathare, MD and CEO of 63SATS Cybertech, backed the move, saying, “The future of 2.2 million students takes clear precedence over the temporary access to a single digital platform.”The episode highlighted the challenge of balancing digital freedom with public security, said Manish Chachada, co-founder and COO of cybersecurity firm Cyble, adding that fraud networks often migrate to other channels.Get the latest India news and live updates. Telegram founder Pavel Durov NEW DELHI: As Telegram founder Pavel Durov accused India of “punishing” more than 150 million users through a temporary restriction on the platform ahead of the NEET-UG retest, the Centre and cybersecurity experts argued that the measure was designed not to suppress discussion but to break an “active ecosystem of exam-related fraud, extortion and misinformation” targeting over 22 lakh candidates.Durov said the restriction failed to stop leaks, claiming they simply migrated to other platforms, and also alleged that Reliance had disrupted Telegram access outside India through border gateway protocol hijacking. Jio continues to operate its network in accordance with global Internet routing best practices and the highest standards of reliability, security, and transparency,” Reliance Jio said on X Govt officials maintained the action was temporaryand a proportionate response to an active cyber-fraud ecosystem targeting one of India’s largest public examinations.Officials and cybersecurity professionals contended that the primary concern was not exam integrity alone but organised fraud networks exploiting anxious students. According to material prepared in support of the restriction, Telegram channels with names such as ‘PAPER LEAKED NEET’ and ‘Re-NEET 2026’ were allegedly running extortion rackets, demanding between Rs 14,000 and Rs 25,000 — and in some instances Rs 10 lakh — from candidates and parents in exchange for question papers, which did not exist.Officials also said the platform allowed administrators to edit old messages while retaining the original timestamp. Investigators claimed fraudsters used this feature to alter previously innocuous posts after the exam and these manipulated screenshots were circulated as “proof” of leaks.Neehar Pathare, MD and CEO of 63SATS Cybertech, backed the move, saying, “The future of 2.2 million students takes clear precedence over the temporary access to a single digital platform.”The episode highlighted the challenge of balancing digital freedom with public security, said Manish Chachada, co-founder and COO of cybersecurity firm Cyble, adding that fraud networks often migrate to other channels.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader Aroop Biswas has written to the party’s bank seeking an immediate freeze on transactions from its accounts, citing a leadership crisis following a large-scale rebellion within the organisation.Biswas claimed that rival groups were now asserting themselves as the legitimate representatives and office-bearers of the party, creating uncertainty over who was authorised to operate AITC’s accounts and financial assets.”I, Aroop Biswas, acting in my capacity as the Treasurer of the All India Trinamool Congress (hereinafter referred to as “AITC”), write to bring to your attention a serious dispute presently prevailing concerning the authority and control of the affairs of AITC. At present, rival groups are claiming to be the legitimate representatives and office bearers of AITC, resulting in uncertainty regarding the authority of persons who may seek to operate the bank accounts maintained in the name of AITC,” the letter posted by IANS read.According to the leader, the developments had triggered a serious dispute over the authority, control and management of the party’s affairs and assets, creating a risk that party funds could be accessed or utilised by individuals whose authority was under challenge.”In order to safeguard the funds of the organization and prevent any unauthorized withdrawals, transfers, encumbrances or other transactions, I request your good office to maintain status quo and refrain from permitting any debit transactions or changes in operational mandates in respect of the following account maintained with your branch until the dispute is duly resolved or appropriate directions are issued by the competent authority,” it added.Biswas also raised concerns about previously signed cheques issued during his tenure as treasurer. He said cheques signed for operational and administrative purposes were often retained at the party office for urgent financial requirements and could now be vulnerable to misuse.”In view of the present dispute regarding the authority and control of the organization, I have a strong and bona fide apprehension that the aforesaid signed cheques… may be misused or presented for encashment without proper authorization,” the letter stated.Warning of a “real and imminent risk” of unauthorised transactions, Biswas argued that any financial activity during the pendency of the dispute could expose both the organisation and him, as former treasurer, to legal and financial liabilities.He urged the bank to take “urgent and immediate precautionary measures” and refrain from allowing any transactions in the account until the dispute over the party’s leadership and control is settled.This adds to the woes of the TMC after twin revolt in the party at national and state level. TMC witnessed a massive rebellion, its first ever, when 20 out of 28 Lok Sabha MPs and 58 out of 60 MLAs, openly revolted against the existing leadership and formed a separate faction.The rebel Lok Sabha TMC MPs decided to merge with the National Citizens Party of India and expressed their aspirations to align with the ruling NDA.
