Reacting to the honour, Rajkumar Periyasamy said receiving a National Award had always been one of his biggest ambitions. “I’ve always dreamt of receiving the National Award ever since I dreamt of becoming a film director. And it’s come true now! God has been truly kind,” he wrote. The director added that awards were never his focus while making ‘Amaran.’ “While writing and making ‘Amaran,’ all I had in my mind was to make the audience empathise with the lives of Indian Army soldiers and their families. The film has given back to our team and me many times over,” he shared.

Thanking the jury for recognising his work, Rajkumar said, “For this highest recognition of the National Award for Best Direction, I thank the esteemed jury of the 72nd National Film Awards. This Golden Lotus encourages me to explore more and strengthens my belief in my creative journey.” He went on to dedicate the prestigious honour to Major Mukund Varadarajan’s family and every soldier of the Indian Army.
