NEW DELHI: The ruling Congress won five of the seven seats in the Karnataka legislative council elections on Thursday in the first electoral contest since the new government led by chief minister DK Shivakumar assumed office. The BJP secured the remaining two, news agency PTI reported.Congress candidates Thippannappa Kamknoor, PV Mohan, BK Hariprasad, Shivanna BS and Vinay Karthik Prakash were declared elected. The BJP’s Lingaraj Patil and Raghu R also emerged victorious, while the JD(S)’s lone candidate, Govindaraju, lost the contest.According to PTI sources, there were instances of cross-voting by legislators from both the BJP and the JD(S), with Congress candidates reportedly securing more votes than anticipated.Voting for the seven legislative council seats was held at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, where eight candidates were in the fray. The victims were identified as Aditya Sharma, a cadet, Shivanand Chaurashiya, a fitter, and Patnala Suresh, a chief engineer .India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks and lodged a “strong protest” over the deaths . In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India conveyed its “deepest concerns about the ongoing incidents of attacks” on vessels with Indian crew.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also raised the issue with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.Contrary to Khera’s statements, during the G7 meeting on June 17, PM Modi raised the issue directly, noting that hundreds of thousands of Indian nationals work on ships around the world. “Their safety is of utmost importance to us,” PM Modi said.However, Trump’s response was brief: “It’s a tough profession. There’s no question about it. And we work together on it”.The Bilateral Trade AgreementThe India-US trade relationship has been a source of tension, with the Trump administration imposing steep tariffs on Indian exports, partly over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil . Talks on a broader bilateral trade agreement have been ongoing, with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor saying in early June that 99 per cent of the proposed interim agreement had been finalised.Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said both sides had finalised most elements of the first phase, with negotiations focused on a few minor issues . A US trade delegation led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch was in New Delhi from June 2-4 for talks.During the G7 meeting, Trump said a new deal was “very close” and described Modi as a “tough” negotiator . However, Khera alleged that Modi did not push back on the one-sided nature of the deal . 16 drug combinations banned by Centre over safety concerns NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) medicines, including certain antibiotic, pain-relief and skin-treatment products, after expert panels found that they lacked therapeutic justification and were not supported by scientific evidence.The health ministry on Friday prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of these medicines with immediate effect under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.The action follows a Supreme Court-directed review of fixed-dose combinations sold in the country. 16 drug combinations banned by Centre over safety concerns NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) medicines, including certain antibiotic, pain-relief and skin-treatment products, after expert panels found that they lacked therapeutic justification and were not supported by scientific evidence.The health ministry on Friday prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of these medicines with immediate effect under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.The action follows a Supreme Court-directed review of fixed-dose combinations sold in the country. Armed individuals were apprehended, leading to serious questions about security and the lengths to which some are willing to go,” and shared a video of a person holding what appeared to be a pistol.The Trinamool second-in-command had travelled to Delhi earlier in the day to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and to raise objections over the merger of rebel TMC MPs with the Tripura-based National Citizens’ Party of India (NCPI).Separately, TMC MP Derek O’Brien also alleged that a “BJP supporter” was seen at the airport exit with a firearm when he and Abhishek Banerjee were leaving the premises.
