The minister alleged that river-linking projects announced by previous governments had progressed slowly, affecting growth in agricultural productivity CHENNAI: The TVK government on Wednesday asserted that it would safeguard Tamil Nadu’s rightful share of inter-state river waters and protect its water-sharing interests.Presenting the budget, finance minister N Marie Wilson said the government would pursue raising the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam, implementing the Anaimalaiyar and Nallar dam projects, and expediting the Godavari-Cauvery river-linking project to strengthen long-term water security and support farmers. CHENNAI: The TVK government on Wednesday asserted that it would safeguard Tamil Nadu’s rightful share of inter-state river waters and protect its water-sharing interests.Presenting the budget, finance minister N Marie Wilson said the government would pursue raising the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam, implementing the Anaimalaiyar and Nallar dam projects, and expediting the Godavari-Cauvery river-linking project to strengthen long-term water security and support farmers. Joint teams carried out cordon-and-search operations based on intelligence inputs about suspicious activity JAMMU: Security forces busted a terrorist hideout in a remote village in J&K’s Poonch district, while joint teams carried out cordon-and-search operations in Jammu’s Akhnoor sector and Kathua’s Hiranagar sector based on intelligence inputs about suspicious activity, officials said Wednesday.Officials said the hideout, set up in a cave, was unearthed during a joint search operation by the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles and J&K Police in Bhoriwala dhok of Surankote tehsil on Wednesday morning. Troops seized two magazines of an AK assault rifle, 117 rounds of ammunition, and 17 rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition from the spot.Around 2pm Tuesday, a suspected Pakistani drone allegedly entered Indian airspace and was spotted hovering over the forward villages of Shukhmal, Devindera and Tapan in Bobiyan area of Kathua’s Hiranagar sector. BSF personnel tried to shoot it down, but the UAV, flying at a high altitude, managed to return across the border. Over the past three months, authorities have seized 1,307 vehicles allegedly involved in the illegal transport of minerals and registered 1,161 FIRs CHENNAI: The State government on Wednesday announced plans to establish an end-to-end mineral management system to monitor mineral production and transportation in real time.Presenting the budget, finance minister N Marie Wilson said the government would take steps to curb illegal mining and quarrying and plug revenue leakages. “This technology-driven, transparent and integrated framework will ensure sustainable extraction of the state’s mineral wealth and optimisation of revenue while preventing illegal mining,” Wilson said, detailing the new system. The natural resources department will also establish district-level vigilance and enforcement wings to strengthen surveillance and curb illegal mining.Over the past three months, authorities have seized 1,307 vehicles allegedly involved in the illegal transport of minerals and registered 1,161 FIRs. As part of a special drive, officials inspected 431 quarries and detected violations in 155 cases. Action is being taken against the erring quarries. All major political parties in Kashmir held protests and demonstrations, carrying banners and raising slogans describing Aug 5, 2019, as a ‘black day’ SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Striking a poetic note on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories, chief minister Omar Abdullah invoked celebrated American poet Robert Lee Frost as he said the wounds caused by the move had still not healed, and vowed that “the injustices done to us will be corrected”.“7 years, we haven’t forgotten & we haven’t reconciled far less accepted our current circumstances. My party & I remain committed to reversing all that was done to J&K that took away our rights & threatens our identity. ‘The woods are lovely, dark & deep. But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep’…” Omar said in a post on X, quoting from the poem ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ by Frost, before he left for an inspection of flood-hit areas in Jammu’s Poonch district.Speaking to reporters in Poonch, the CM said, “The wounds of the abrogation are still there.
