Sunjay Kapur (Image/ANI) NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested social media influencer Dr Neelam Singh alias The Skin Doctor for allegedly posting tweets against the Kapur family following the death of businessman Sunjay Kapur. The complaint was lodged at Vasant Kunj Police Station by the Kapur family, news agency ANI reported citing sources. According to police, further investigation is under way.Sunjay Kapur, chairman of auto components company Sona Comstar and former husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, died in London on June 12 while playing polo. Medical reports later ruled his death as natural, attributing it to cardiac-related causes including Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and Ischaemic Heart Disease. However, the matter later took a controversial turn after Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, sought a criminal investigation in the United Kingdom citing ‘unexplained circumstances’ surrounding his death and raised allegations linked to the family-run business and inheritance matters. Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor married in 2003 and divorced in 2016. They have two children together. Nashik: Bird flu infections continue to spread in Navapur, with samples from two more poultry farms testing positive, prompting authorities to initiate fresh culling operations and expand surveillance beyond previously identified epicentres.Dr Sanjay Khachane, the district deputy commissioner of the animal husbandry department, said the latest detections indicate the infection has spread outside earlier containment zones.”The department had carried out the surveillance of the poultry farms beyond the epicentres that involved two different sets of poultry farms. Samples from them were sent to the laboratory, where those from two farms in different areas tested positive. This is the third set of farms, and both farms are beyond the infected zones surrounding the earlier farms. This means that the infection is still rising,” he said.Authorities have now declared the two farms as new epicentres and launched a re-survey of poultry units in surrounding areas. Birds within the affected perimeters will be culled to contain the spread.”Currently, the number of birds to be culled is around 50,000 in both farms. The survey will establish the exact number of farms and the birds,” Khachane said.In the first outbreak, birds in nine farms across three epicentres were culled. In the second phase, four farms across three epicentres were affected. In the latest instance, two new epicentres have emerged, indicating the infection has spread beyond the 1km radius of previously affected zones.So far, around 3.9 lakh birds have been culled, while 21.6 lakh eggs and 4.99 lakh tonnes of feed have been destroyed by Rapid Reaction Teams engaged in containment efforts. Officials said the latest culling operations at the newly identified farms will begin on Thursday as part of intensified measures to control the outbreak.Despite the decline, Navapur remains a critical food artery. – NEW DELHI: Pushing back against the claims of delay on the part of Congress in selecting Kerala CM, AICC manager Ajay Maken said Congress has taken an average of five days in selecting its 22 CMs since 2000, against BJP’s average of 7.2 days to select its 30 CMs.Amid intense headlines over the issue, Maken posted on social media his calculation of the time taken by the two national parties in selecting their CMs over the last 26 years.Maken revealed that Congress has never taken more than nine days to pick a CM, like in the case of Kerala which will end on Thursday on the tenth day. He said in 14 out of the 22 cases, Congress took five days or less to select a CM.In contrast, Maken found that BJP took 15 days to select the CM of UP in 2022, and took eight days or more in 13 of the 30 instances of selecting a CM. – NEW DELHI: A rationalist organisation raised eyebrows in the Supreme Court by asserting that Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of conscience and right to freely profess, practice and propagate religion, permits a person to wake up as a Hindu, have lunch as a Muslim and go to sleep as a Christian.Arguing for rationalists Hamid Dabholkar and Nandini Jadhav, office bearers of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, senior advocate Sanjay Hegde told a nine-judge bench led by CJI Surya Kant that every person as per his conscience can profess and practice any religion at any given time of a day.Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah termed that such an interpretation of Article 25(1) could lead to an absurdity as a person can say I am a Muslim but would become a Hindu to enter a temple to worship a deity at a given time of the day.“Can one profess Islam, practice Hinduism and propagate Christianity all at once? It is a dangerous proposition,” Justice Amanullah said. Undeterred, Hegde said if the place of worship is kept out, then a person in exercise of his right to freedom of conscience can do this.Hegde said God does not discriminate and cited a folklore about how devotion of a Muslim – ‘Bhakta Salabega’ – stalled the march of Lord Jagannath’s chariot after he was denied permission to participate in the annual Rath Yatra. Justice B V Nagarathna said, “The morale of these stories is the unqualified devotion of the person. Can a non-devotee challenge the validity of a religious practice or custom?”Hegde said, “Tradition cannot trump the Constitution. A rationalist holds that reason is the proper test of belief… He rejects the proposition that what is old must be true, and that what is sacred must be exempt from inquiry. The Constitution protects religious autonomy in matters that are intrinsically religious – doctrine, rite, ceremony – but not in matters that are secular though associated with religion.”Supporting the SC’s 2018 judgment, which quashed the restriction on entry of women in the 10-50 age bracket into Sabarimala Ayyappa temple, Hegde said a denomination cannot continue with a practice that is per se discriminatory towards women in their prime years.“Where the equal worship right of an individual under Article 25(1) collides with a denomination’s claim of exclusion under Article 26(b), the individual right prevails. – NEW DELHI: A rationalist organisation raised eyebrows in the Supreme Court by asserting that Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of conscience and right to freely profess, practice and propagate religion, permits a person to wake up as a Hindu, have lunch as a Muslim and go to sleep as a Christian.Arguing for rationalists Hamid Dabholkar and Nandini Jadhav, office bearers of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, senior advocate Sanjay Hegde told a nine-judge bench led by CJI Surya Kant that every person as per his conscience can profess and practice any religion at any given time of a day.Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah termed that such an interpretation of Article 25(1) could lead to an absurdity as a person can say I am a Muslim but would become a Hindu to enter a temple to worship a deity at a given time of the day.“Can one profess Islam, practice Hinduism and propagate Christianity all at once? It is a dangerous proposition,” Justice Amanullah said. Undeterred, Hegde said if the place of worship is kept out, then a person in exercise of his right to freedom of conscience can do this.Hegde said God does not discriminate and cited a folklore about how devotion of a Muslim – ‘Bhakta Salabega’ – stalled the march of Lord Jagannath’s chariot after he was denied permission to participate in the annual Rath Yatra. Justice B V Nagarathna said, “The morale of these stories is the unqualified devotion of the person. Can a non-devotee challenge the validity of a religious practice or custom?”Hegde said, “Tradition cannot trump the Constitution. A rationalist holds that reason is the proper test of belief… He rejects the proposition that what is old must be true, and that what is sacred must be exempt from inquiry. The Constitution protects religious autonomy in matters that are intrinsically religious – doctrine, rite, ceremony – but not in matters that are secular though associated with religion.”Supporting the SC’s 2018 judgment, which quashed the restriction on entry of women in the 10-50 age bracket into Sabarimala Ayyappa temple, Hegde said a denomination cannot continue with a practice that is per se discriminatory towards women in their prime years.“Where the equal worship right of an individual under Article 25(1) collides with a denomination’s claim of exclusion under Article 26(b), the individual right prevails. – NEW DELHI: Market distortion due to some states giving bonus over minimum support price (MSP) for paddy and open ended procurement policy have led to accumulation of rice stocks much higher than the stocking norms, CACP has said in its report released on Wednesday.Govt fixes MSP for crops on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).The commission in its kharif crops marketing season (2026-27) report has recommended imposing a limit on procurement, especially in surplus states that offer bonus over the MSP and have high market fee and other charges. It also has recommended a comprehensive review of open-ended procurement policy for paddy.The report noted that as against 76.6 lakh tonne of stocking norms of rice for central pool as on Jan 1, total rice stocks were 336.7 lakh tonne, nearly 4.4 times higher. “Many state govts pay direct or indirect bonus, which adversely affects crop diversification initiatives, restrict private trade participation and competition and result in excess stocks,” it said.Last month, the expenditure department had told states to refrain from announcing bonus over MSP for paddy and wheat procurement. “Bumper production of wheat and paddy has resulted in wheat and rice stocks far exceeding requirements for the public distribution system (PDS), buffer norms and other welfare and contingency needs. The surplus continues to rise year after year, creating a significant and recurring burden on the public exchequer,” expenditure secretary V Vualnam had said in a communication to Tamil Nadu govt.At present, Odisha gives input subsidy of Rs 800 per quintal over the paddy MSP while Chhattisgarh pays Rs 9,000 an acre with a ceiling of 15 quintal paddy per acre. Kerala had announced, state incentive bonus for paddy farmers at Rs 631 per quintal for kharif marketing season 2025-26 over the centre’s MSP of Rs 2,389.CACP has said that while govt’s food subsidy expenditure currently over Rs 2 lakh crore annually has ensured food security for the poor, the subsidy burden has risen substantially over the years.
