SRINAGAR: NC’s protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday, led by party president Farooq Abdullah and CM Omar Abdullah, seeking restoration of statehood, drew scathing criticism from other political parties in J&K.While BJP accused the CM and his ministers of being away from the UT even as flash floods wreaked havoc, PDP said the sit-in was completely eclipsed by the CJP protest and asked Omar to emulate Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk.“When floods have affected both Jammu and Kashmir regions, the govt should have been here with the people. The protest could have been postponed,” BJP spokesperson Sajid Yousuf Shah said, adding: “The CM should have stayed here along with his ministers to supervise relief efforts instead of attending a show in Delhi.”PDP’s Iltija Mufti described the NC protest as a “lacklustre, deliberately understated and soft-pedalled” one-day event. Her party’s Waheed Parra said the governing party should learn from Wangchuk, who mobilised youths and saw thousands rally in solidarity over the NEET issue. Hundreds of farmers had planned to travel to Delhi by bus.Bharatiya Kisan Union (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) leader Tejveer Singh claimed the Haryana Police sealed the Shambhu border without giving any prior notice.Meanwhile, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said that the govenrment “prioritised the farmers’s interest” and that any FTA was signed “ensuring that these agreements serve the best interests of both the farmers and the nation”.”The Prime Minister addressed several significant issues and offered his guidance. He highlighted the successes the country has achieved in recent months and spoke about the FTAs signed with various nations. Regarding these agreements, the Prime Minister assured that the interests of farmers would be prioritised; he emphasised that no harm would come to them. He stated that the welfare of farmers remains paramount in any FTA signed with any country, ensuring that these agreements serve the best interests of both the farmers and the nation,” Union minister Kiren Rijiju said while addressing media after NDA parliamentary party meeting.The farmers’ convoy began its journey from Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, where more than 1,000 farmers had stayed overnight before leaving for Delhi. The convoy travelled via Madhopur near Sirhind before reaching the Shambhu border.Farmers in Kurukshetra also claimed they were stopped near Jyotisar while attempting to join the protest.In view of the demonstrations, Haryana Police issued a traffic advisory and suggested alternate routes for commuters travelling between Punjab, Haryana and Delhi to minimise disruption.On Monday, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni was detained by police in Kurukshetra while travelling to Delhi for the Mahapanchayat.The outfit’s spokesperson, Prince Waraich, alleged that Haryana Police had detained several workers to stop them from participating in the protest.Farmers have strongly opposed the proposed India-US trade agreement, claiming it could allow cheaper agricultural imports into India, reduce the income of domestic farmers and weaken the country’s agricultural economy.They argued that the agreement could affect not only agriculture and dairy but also sectors such as industry, digital trade, e-commerce, government procurement, intellectual property rights and services.The protesting farmers urged the Centre to abandon the proposed trade deal, saying it should protect the interests of farmers, agricultural labourers, livestock rearers, small traders and ordinary citizens.The security arrangements at the Shambhu border were similar to those put in place in February 2024, when farmers were stopped from marching to Delhi during their agitation demanding a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.Get the latest India News and Live updates. NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the police action against student protesters, calling it “un-Indian”.His remarks came a day after a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday saw roads blocked with demonstrators in the national capital. Police barricades were broken and protestors faced lathi and tear gas, with both accusing each other of going rogue.Speaking to reporters after meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla along with opposition MPs, Rahul Gandhi said, “Modi ji has not even apologised for what happened yesterday. The youth are protesting against the education and testing system. The whole country knows that the education and testing system is hollowed out by termites.””Why is the Prime Minister silent? He should apologise to the students and stop this nonsense of thrashing students,” he added.The Congress leader also accused the government of suppressing students’ voices and demanded a discussion in Parliament on the examination crisis.Claiming that the Speaker had expressed his inability to allow an immediate debate, Rahul said, “The Speaker told us that to hold a discussion in Parliament, he needs the government’s permission. What is happening is completely un-Indian. People are being beaten and assaulted.”He said the protests reflected the frustration of young people and called “for the resignation of the home minister, the education minister and the Prime Minister.””The point is there is no way to treat the young people of this country. The young people of this country do not have opportunities; all the doors are closed; one door is open for competitive exams, which is also destroyed. These students here are complaining not just about the education system but their future,” Rahul said.”They are complaining because of Mr Ambani and Mr Adani, the RSS’s complete takeover of the education system. This is about the future of young people. They watch Ambani’s wedding and Rs 1,000 crores being spent there, while they have no money to open a business of their own. This is much bigger than education. This is students of India saying they have no future in India. This is legitimate. Dharmendra Pradhan, the home minister and the Prime Minister should resign,” he added.This development comes after Rahul Gandhi, along with Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant, RSP MP N K Premachandran and other opposition leaders, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking a discussion on the police action against students and the alleged examination irregularities.After the meeting, the Congress leader posted on X, “Our demand is simple: Parliament must have a detailed discussion on the brutality unleashed on students yesterday and on the government’s complete lack of accountability for the examination crisis.””Students were beaten for asking legitimate questions about their own future. NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the police action against student protesters, calling it “un-Indian”.His remarks came a day after a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday saw roads blocked with demonstrators in the national capital. Police barricades were broken and protestors faced lathi and tear gas, with both accusing each other of going rogue.Speaking to reporters after meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla along with opposition MPs, Rahul Gandhi said, “Modi ji has not even apologised for what happened yesterday. The youth are protesting against the education and testing system. The whole country knows that the education and testing system is hollowed out by termites.””Why is the Prime Minister silent? He should apologise to the students and stop this nonsense of thrashing students,” he added.The Congress leader also accused the government of suppressing students’ voices and demanded a discussion in Parliament on the examination crisis.Claiming that the Speaker had expressed his inability to allow an immediate debate, Rahul said, “The Speaker told us that to hold a discussion in Parliament, he needs the government’s permission. What is happening is completely un-Indian. People are being beaten and assaulted.”He said the protests reflected the frustration of young people and called “for the resignation of the home minister, the education minister and the Prime Minister.””The point is there is no way to treat the young people of this country. The young people of this country do not have opportunities; all the doors are closed; one door is open for competitive exams, which is also destroyed. These students here are complaining not just about the education system but their future,” Rahul said.”They are complaining because of Mr Ambani and Mr Adani, the RSS’s complete takeover of the education system. This is about the future of young people. They watch Ambani’s wedding and Rs 1,000 crores being spent there, while they have no money to open a business of their own. This is much bigger than education. This is students of India saying they have no future in India. This is legitimate. Representative image (ANI photo) NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted searches at eight locations across Bengaluru in connection with an IS recruitment and terror funding case, officials said.The raids, carried out by the ED’s Bengaluru zonal office, began early in the morning and are still under way. The searches are based on an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) registered from a National Investigation Agency (NIA) FIR related to alleged IS recruitment involving Iqra Welfare Trust, Guidance for Mankind, and several individuals based in Bengaluru.The NIA had registered the case under Sections 17 (raising funds for terrorism), 18 (preparatory acts for terrorism), and 18B (recruitment of persons for terrorist acts) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.During the investigation, the NIA arrested four accused and later filed a chargesheet against Irfan Nasir, Ahamed Abdul Cader, Mohd Tauqir Mahmood, Zuhab Hameed Shakeel Manna, and Mohd Shihab.According to the chargesheet, the accused, who were allegedly linked to the banned terrorist organisation IS/ISIL/Daesh, conspired to radicalise and recruit Muslim youths from Bengaluru to join the terror group.”It is revealed that they identified, radicalised, and recruited youths through a muslim ‘personality development’ workshop called ‘Iqra Camp’ and a weekly study circle called ‘Quran Circle’ that grew out of it; raised and channelled funds; and facilitated the illegal travel of recruits to Syria via Turkey to join ISIS and fight against the Government of Syria – acts mentioned in the charge sheet as ‘waging war against Syria, an Asiatic Power in alliance with the Government of India’,” the officials said.Investigators also alleged that the group tried to use public sentiment during the Anti-CAA/NRC protests to provoke Muslims against non-Muslims and spread IS ideology through secure social media platforms.Officials further said the accused collected money from individuals, trusts, and their own savings to help Muslim youths travel illegally to Syria and fight for IS.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Sena (UBT) moves SC challenging Speaker’s approval of MPs’ merger with Shinde faction (ANI, PTI images) NEW DELHI: The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court challenging Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s decision to approve the merger of its six MPs with the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde.Senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, appearing for the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, mentioned the matter before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, seeking an urgent hearing on Wednesday. Responding to the request, the Chief Justice said, “We will see.”Kamat told the bench that Speaker Om Birla had approved the merger of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena on July 18. He argued that the development had wider constitutional implications, saying it had become “a national phenomenon” where MPs were joining the very parties they had contested elections against.The petition challenges the Speaker’s decision to recognise the merger, with the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention against the move.What we know so far?With the Speaker formally approving the merger, the strength of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Lok Sabha has come down to just three MPs, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s tally has risen from seven to 13 MPs.The party has now become the third-largest constituent of the NDA, after the BJP (239 MPs) and the TDP (16 MPs), overtaking Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which has 12 MPs.Reacting to the development, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said the six MPs joined his party to secure development for their constituencies and not for “personal gains”. Dismissing allegations that the lawmakers were induced to switch sides with money, Shinde said the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena needed to introspect on why its leaders were leaving the party. “These six MPs have joined us to ensure justice and development for the people who elected them. Sena (UBT) moves SC challenging Speaker’s approval of MPs’ merger with Shinde faction (ANI, PTI images) NEW DELHI: The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court challenging Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s decision to approve the merger of its six MPs with the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde.Senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, appearing for the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, mentioned the matter before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, seeking an urgent hearing on Wednesday. Responding to the request, the Chief Justice said, “We will see.”Kamat told the bench that Speaker Om Birla had approved the merger of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena on July 18. He argued that the development had wider constitutional implications, saying it had become “a national phenomenon” where MPs were joining the very parties they had contested elections against.The petition challenges the Speaker’s decision to recognise the merger, with the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention against the move.What we know so far?With the Speaker formally approving the merger, the strength of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Lok Sabha has come down to just three MPs, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s tally has risen from seven to 13 MPs.The party has now become the third-largest constituent of the NDA, after the BJP (239 MPs) and the TDP (16 MPs), overtaking Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which has 12 MPs.Reacting to the development, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said the six MPs joined his party to secure development for their constituencies and not for “personal gains”. Dismissing allegations that the lawmakers were induced to switch sides with money, Shinde said the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena needed to introspect on why its leaders were leaving the party. “These six MPs have joined us to ensure justice and development for the people who elected them.
