NEW DELHI: BJP Tuesday dismissed opposition’s bid to revive its challenge to SIR by writing to the CJI as a diversionary tactic, saying people’s constant rejection of these parties in the polls has raised a question over their policies but they are instead busy raising questions over a process already upheld by the judiciary. “The highest judiciary has already upheld the SIR. The opposition keeps raising questions over SIR even though SC has rejected pleas against the process and recognised EC’s power to do so,” BJP’s chief spokesperson and MP Anil Baluni said. He said Congress and other opposition parties keep harping about SIR as an excuse to hide their electoral failures and asked them to instead reflect on their continuous rejection by people in elections. “SIR is not being done for the first time. It was carried out during previous govts, including those of the Congress, as well,” Baluni added. ‘No intrusion… transgression in absence of demarcation’: Kiran Rijiju NEW DELHI: Union minister Kiren Rijiju has rejected the claim of a tribal body from his home state that the Chinese army has occupied parts of their land. He emphasised that there is no “intrusion” into the Indian side, though transgressions are committed by both countries from time to time due to the absence of clear border demarcation. “There is no intrusion. Transgressions from both sides happen due to the absence of demarcation,” he told TOI. The Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal West rued the lack of infrastructure development in the border region of state, the largest in area in the Northeast, during the tenure of earlier Central govts. He said that the Modi-led govt has prioritised building infra in the region. Free navigation in Hormuz essential: PM Modi to Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian NEW DELHI: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian briefed PM Modi about the recent developments in West Asia and the way forward in a phone call, said the Indian govt. On X, Modi said he reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world, and called for lasting peace. An Indian readout said Modi welcomed the understanding between US and Iran and reiterated India’s position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue & diplomacy. “PM reiterated the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and for safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce,” said the readout.Modi said on X, “Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the world.” Pezeshkian had invited Modi earlier for the funeral of late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that begins on July 4. However, India has decided to send MoS for external affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar governor Syed Ata Hasnain for the multi-day programme. An Iranian readout said Modi told Pezeshkian India would be sending a special delegation for the funeral. This was the third conversation between Modi and Pezeshkian since the war in West Asia started on Feb 28. The talks took place amid uncertainty over diplomatic efforts to implement the June 17 interim peace deal. SC orders status quo on allocation of ethanol supply NEW DELHI: SC Tuesday ordered status quo with regard to ethanol supply allocation for the ethanol supply year 2025-26 after attorney general R Venkataramani argued that 20% blending is a national policy. Abench of Justices M M Sundresh and Sheel Nagu passed the order on a plea of Bharat Petroleum challenging a Karnataka HC order which had directed various oil marketing companies to consider and decide a representation submitted by a distillery seeking enhancement of ethanol allocation for 2025-26. Venkataramani, appearing for BP, submitted that HC order could destabilise the national policy for 20% ethanol-petrol blending. He urged SC to have all matters pertaining to the issue transferred to the court as adjudication of similar petitions were pending in Bombay and Patna HCs. The AG said that ethanol supply contracts were finalised in Oct 2025 itself and several petitions were pending in various HCs. He sought a week’s time to file transfer petitions. The HC had passed the order on the plea of one M/S Vinp Distilleries and Sugar Private Limited, a dedicated ethanol manufacturer, which approached the court challenging reduced allocation of ethanol supply.Get the latest India news and live updates.
