Sopore Police conducts searches at 26 locations in UAPA case against Jamaat-e-Islami SRINAGAR: Police searched 26 locations across Sopore in north Kashmir on Sunday in a coordinated crackdown on banned Jamaat-e-Islami J&K, seizing documents, literature and electronic devices as part of a probe into its alleged links to terrorist outfits and youth radicalisation.The search targeted residential and other premises linked to Jamaat-e-Islami J&K members and activists. No arrest was reported till filing of this report. “The operation was conducted in accordance with due legal procedure and prescribed protocols,” police said.Police said the seized material was being examined to establish further linkages and activities connected with the proscribed organisation. The operation was part of efforts to dismantle networks linked to banned organisations, separatist activities and terrorist funding.Distinct from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Jamaat-e-Islami J&K has a history tied to regional separatism and has long had a support base in Sopore. Union government first declared it an “unlawful association” in Feb 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Regarding the viral video – what is being mistaken for a pellet gun is actually a paintball gun; it fires soft, coloured balls used to mark and identify troublemakers. Suvendu Adhikair on protests against Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday described the protests against his predecessor, Mamata Banerjee, at Hailsahar in North 24 Parganas as a reflection of “strong public anger.”Mamata Banerjee faced protests earlier in the day when a group of protesters allegedly surrounded her vehicle, raised “chor-chor” (thief, thief) slogans and hurled mud and slippers at her car. She had gone to meet the family of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker who allegedly died in police custody.Denying any involvement of the ruling BJP in the incident, Adhikari said, “You (Mamata Banerjee) have committed so much theft, you will have to hear people call you a thief.”He further claimed that the TMC supremo went to Halisahar without being invited by the deceased’s family and that the TMC worker’s family was “satisfied” with the police and administration.“Do not do this when the family is shutting the door. You are saying you will enter by force. Do it when people seek your help or intervention. This is the time for development. Do not go anywhere and do anything that disrupts normal life,” he added.The chief minister also questioned why his predecessor had not visited the family of “Abhaya” (fearless), the moniker given to the RG Kar rape and murder victim, on the second anniversary of her death.“You could have gone to Abhaya’s house today. You could have gone to Ratna Debnath with a towel around your neck and apologised, saying you had made a mistake and asking for forgiveness. I believe she would have forgiven you,” Adhikari remarked.Ratna Debnath, Abhaya’s mother, is now a BJP MLA. She had previously said she contested the recent West Bengal assembly elections to fight for justice and accused Mamata Banerjee, who was the chief minister at the time of the RG Kar incident, of failing to save “Abhaya.”Meanwhile, Adhkari accused Mamata Banerjee of trying to sabotage probe into the RG Kar incident, and questioned why would people not be angry with her.He asked: “You (Banerjee) killed Abhaya, went to destroy evidence and tried to buy her family with Rs 10 lakh. If people threw mud at your car, what else would they throw? Flowers?”Earlier, Mamata Banerjee was forced to pass through a police cordon as the demonstration briefly turned the road into a charged political theatre, with rival sides trading allegations of conspiracy, provocation and administrative failure.“My car has been attacked with stones, shoes and mud. This is nothing but a conspiracy. Suvendu Adhikair on protests against Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday described the protests against his predecessor, Mamata Banerjee, at Hailsahar in North 24 Parganas as a reflection of “strong public anger.”Mamata Banerjee faced protests earlier in the day when a group of protesters allegedly surrounded her vehicle, raised “chor-chor” (thief, thief) slogans and hurled mud and slippers at her car. She had gone to meet the family of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker who allegedly died in police custody.Denying any involvement of the ruling BJP in the incident, Adhikari said, “You (Mamata Banerjee) have committed so much theft, you will have to hear people call you a thief.”He further claimed that the TMC supremo went to Halisahar without being invited by the deceased’s family and that the TMC worker’s family was “satisfied” with the police and administration.“Do not do this when the family is shutting the door. You are saying you will enter by force. Do it when people seek your help or intervention. This is the time for development. Do not go anywhere and do anything that disrupts normal life,” he added.The chief minister also questioned why his predecessor had not visited the family of “Abhaya” (fearless), the moniker given to the RG Kar rape and murder victim, on the second anniversary of her death.“You could have gone to Abhaya’s house today. You could have gone to Ratna Debnath with a towel around your neck and apologised, saying you had made a mistake and asking for forgiveness. I believe she would have forgiven you,” Adhikari remarked.Ratna Debnath, Abhaya’s mother, is now a BJP MLA. She had previously said she contested the recent West Bengal assembly elections to fight for justice and accused Mamata Banerjee, who was the chief minister at the time of the RG Kar incident, of failing to save “Abhaya.”Meanwhile, Adhkari accused Mamata Banerjee of trying to sabotage probe into the RG Kar incident, and questioned why would people not be angry with her.He asked: “You (Banerjee) killed Abhaya, went to destroy evidence and tried to buy her family with Rs 10 lakh. If people threw mud at your car, what else would they throw? Flowers?”Earlier, Mamata Banerjee was forced to pass through a police cordon as the demonstration briefly turned the road into a charged political theatre, with rival sides trading allegations of conspiracy, provocation and administrative failure.“My car has been attacked with stones, shoes and mud. This is nothing but a conspiracy. His 2-yr fixed tenure was coming to an end this month, now extended till 13 Aug 2027.According to a notification issued by the DoPT on Saturday, “Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in tenure of Rahul Navin, IRS, as Director of Enforcement in the Directorate of Enforcement for a period of one year beyond 13.08.2026 i.e. up to 13.08.2027, including extension in service beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. 31.07.2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”After three years as director ED, Navin, a 1993 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), stands a chance of getting two more extensions and serve till Aug 2029, all through the present tenure of the Modi govt with next general elections due in April-May 2029.As per service age Navin’s retirement is due on 31 July 2027, but tenure of ED director can continue beyond that as in the case of his predecessor Sanjay Mishra.Rahul Navin hails from Bihar and had an outstanding academic distinction with a degree in BTech and MTech from IIT Kanpurand an MBA from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne.On 15th September 2023, he assumed charge as Director (In-Charge) and was appointed as Director of ED on 14th August 2024.He has also written a book on “Information Exchange and Tax Transparency: Tackling Global Tax Evasion and Avoidance” while being in the tax policy division of the finance ministry.As ED director, Navin has laid down a new roadmap for his officers of completing all investigations within two years and ensuring attached properties are auctioned and restituted to the rightful claimant and victims of frauds — whether it be banks or individuals — within a specific timeframe. TMC MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Dola Sen were accompanying her.Kalyan Banerjee described the incident as an “attempt to murder” and alleged that the attack was targeted at Mamata Banerjee. He also accused the police of remaining silent spectators while the incident took place.”The entire car, there was not a single second when stones were not thrown. Stones were thrown every moment, targeting Mamata Banerjee to assault her,” Kalyan Banerjee said, as cited by news agency ANI.He alleged that hundreds of BJP workers were present at the spot and claimed that the incident took place in the presence of police personnel.”Hundreds and hundreds of BJP workers were there, and police were remaining silent spectators, absolutely silent spectators,” he said.Kalyan Banerjee also alleged that there was a direction from West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari behind the incident.”Of course there was a direction given by the CM Suvendu Adhikari,” he said.Abhishek Banerjee alleges ‘political violence’TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee also accused the BJP of unleashing political violence in West Bengal and alleged that Mamata Banerjee was “brutally attacked” while travelling to meet the family of the deceased party worker.In a post on social media, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that the incident reflected a wider law-and-order failure in the state.”And now, a former Chief Minister of the state, who was on her way to meet the grieving family, is brutally attacked by goons planted by BJP,” he said, as reported by ANI.He questioned the police response and said the incident represented a “failure of governance”.”This is not merely a failure of the state police. This is a failure of governance,” Abhishek Banerjee said.He also alleged that the police had failed to protect TMC workers and the grieving family, and questioned whether political violence had become a tool of governance in the state.Dola Sen questions law and orderRajya Sabha MP Dola Sen said Mamata Banerjee had gone to meet the family of the TMC worker who allegedly died in police custody and questioned whether she should have been prevented from making the visit.”Our worker died in police custody, an incident akin to a lockup death. His wife is a councillor. You tell me, as a matter of simple, natural justice, should our leader, Mamata Banerjee, not go to meet that family?” Sen said.She alleged that stones and half-bricks were thrown at Mamata Banerjee’s vehicle and claimed that BJP workers and police personnel were present at the spot.”They attacked her in a targeted manner… BJP goons and police stood in front, throwing half-bricks and stones, cracking the glass of Didi’s car,” she alleged.Sen also said Mamata Banerjee’s visit was not a political programme but an attempt to meet the family of the deceased worker.Mamata alleges attack could have caused serious injuriesMamata Banerjee herself alleged that large stones were hurled at her car in front of police personnel and said the attack could have resulted in serious injuries or death.”Large stones were hurled at my car by anti-social elements, right in front of the police. The attack on the vehicle was so severe that if the windows had been open, my head would have been split open. We could have all been killed,” she said.She also alleged that the police were providing protection to the BJP and said she had never witnessed such an incident before.”This happened right in front of the police. I have never seen anything like this.
