NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday penned emotional notes for their mother Sonia Gandhi, who is set to release her memoir ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ in November.The messages came on the birth anniversary of their father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, with both Rahul and Priyanka reflecting the relationship of their parents and the personal losses Sonia Gandhi endured over the years.Rahul, addressing his mother as ‘Mama’, recalled the last time he saw his parents together more than 35 years ago and spoke about Sonia Gandhi’s life after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991.”Mama, I last saw you and Papa together more than 35 years ago. Since the day Papa left, I have watched you face everything life threw at you with never-ending courage and dignity,” Rahul wrote on X.”Only Priyanka and I really know what you have been through, and how difficult your life after Papa truly was,” he added.Rahul said he was proud that Sonia Gandhi, who has largely kept her personal life away from public view, had decided to tell her story.”I am happy, and so proud, that your story ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ — will finally be read by the millions of people who love you. NEW DELHI: AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday stepped up his criticism of the Centre’s ethanol policy, linking the use of sugarcane for ethanol production to the recent rise in sugar prices and accusing the government of creating a supply problem.In a post on X, Kejriwal said the government had promoted ethanol production from sugarcane to reduce foreign exchange spending on crude oil imports, but was now considering sugar imports because of tighter domestic supplies. “To save the foreign exchange spent on oil imports, they started making ethanol from sugarcane. No one knows what will happen if they do something.”His comments come amid a sharp rise in domestic sugar prices and reports that the government is considering measures, including limited imports and tighter stockholding limits, to improve supplies ahead of the festival season.The former Delhi chief minister has also been leading the AAP’s campaign against E20 petrol, alleging that the government is trying to silence criticism of the ethanol-blended fuel policy. In a video posted on X, Kejriwal claimed that social media content critical of E20 was being removed and questioned how public concerns could be suppressed.“Anyone who raises a voice against E20…their page (is) taken down, their video deleted… FIR filed against them… How will you suppress 1.40 crore people?” he said.Kejriwal used a joke about police forces from the US, Russia and India searching for a lion to criticise the government’s handling of the E20 debate. NEW DELHI: A group of lawyers on Thursday protested outside the Bar Council of India (BCI) office, demanding the resignation of chairman Manan Kumar Mishra. The protest came days after the council’s now-withdrawn order targeting the enrolment of NALSAR University’s graduating batch drew criticism from sections of the legal fraternity.Heavy police deployment was seen near the BCI office as demonstrators raised slogans and held placards calling for Mishra’s resignation and greater accountability. The protest was organised by the All India Young Advocates Association and supported by the Cockroach Janta Party.Advocate Raman Sharma told news agency ANI that the protest was driven by lawyers despite the support from the Cockroach Janta Party.“It is fine if the Cockroach Janta Party has supported us–that is well and good… our own fraternity certainly should have thought about it. However, this is strictly a movement by advocates against our own apex body to address the shortcomings within the organisation and press for our legitimate demands,” he said.Questioning Mishra’s tenure, Sharma said, “The Chairman has held his position for 14 years; what has he actually done for the legal fraternity…The All India Young Lawyers Association are demanding the BCI Chairman’s resignation. We are making the same demand.”Advocate Umesh Kumar, holding the Constitution during the protest, questioned Mishra’s record on lawyer welfare and alleged that the BCI had focused on “political agendas” while issues affecting lawyers remained unaddressed.“Name one thing the BCI Chairman has done for the welfare of law students or lawyers… Lawyers are attacked daily and are being murdered inside police stations…He remains silent when it comes to our welfare, yet he is always at the forefront of advancing political agendas–often misusing official BCI letters to do so,” Kumar said.He added that the protesters were also seeking action on broader professional concerns, including lawyer welfare, stipends, chambers, the Advocates Act and regulation of law colleges. “There are claims that 35% to 40% of the people in this profession are fake lawyers,” Kumar alleged.A day before the protest, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das voiced support for the demonstration, backing a peaceful protest seeking accountability. SC on expansive definition of ‘industry’ NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday held that the broad meaning of “industry” laid down in its 1978 Bangalore Water Supply judgment is the “correct interpretation” and would apply to establishments where an employer-employee relationship exists.A nine-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, in a 6:3 majority judgment, observed that the expansive interpretation of “industry” under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, was necessary in the post-Independence decades to protect workers from arbitrary retrenchment.Justice Joymalya Bagchi refused to exempt temples and charitable organisations, which operate on donations, from the expansive meaning of industry. SC on expansive definition of ‘industry’ NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday held that the broad meaning of “industry” laid down in its 1978 Bangalore Water Supply judgment is the “correct interpretation” and would apply to establishments where an employer-employee relationship exists.A nine-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, in a 6:3 majority judgment, observed that the expansive interpretation of “industry” under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, was necessary in the post-Independence decades to protect workers from arbitrary retrenchment.Justice Joymalya Bagchi refused to exempt temples and charitable organisations, which operate on donations, from the expansive meaning of industry.
