Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed the Lok Sabha that the VB-G RAM G scheme has been implemented in rural areas of the entire country. NEW DELHI: Over 9.69 crore person-days have been generated in approximately a month of the rollout of the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act (VB-G RAM G) which replaced MGNREGA, the govt informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.When VB- G RAM G Scheme was rolled out from July 1, revised wage rates were notified by the govt with a new interim base wage rate of Rs 300 per day. With this the national average notified wage increased from Rs 298.8 per day under MGNREGA to Rs 327.4 under VB–G RAM G, representing an average increase of Rs 28.6 per day. Prior to this notification, wage rates in several states were below Rs 300, with the lowest notified wage being Rs 241 per day.Meanwhile, the parliamentary standing committee on rural development and panchayati raj in its report submitted in Parliament on Tuesday recommended a comprehensive review of the wage-determination methodology including the appropriateness of the 2011 base year and the adequacy of CPI-AL and consider instituting a minimum wage floor of Rs 400 per day with regional differentiation and ensure systematic and meaningful indexation to a robust inflation indicator that reflects actual rural living costs.“Pending structural revision, necessary fiscal space should be sought for a significant upward adjustment in the current cycle,” the panel chaired by Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka recommended. Often the tests are not conclusive if taking some medicine leads to detection of psychoactive substances. NEW DELHI: The tiny plastic sachet that has become synonymous with pan masala may finally be on its way out. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified plastic-free packaging norms for the product, a move experts say could further enforcement of an existing ban by allowing the food regulator to act directly against violators.The amended Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2026, require pan masala to be packed only in paper, paperboard, cellulose or other naturally derived materials free from plastic, or in tin or glass containers. The notification prohibits use of materials containing polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, PVC, synthetic polymers, laminates, aluminium foil and metallised layers, and also makes the packaging subject to Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.The rules came into force upon their publication in the gazetteA senior FSSAI official told TOI that pan masala has been specifically included under Schedule IV of packaging regulations to provide Food Business Operators with clear guidance on suitable packaging materials, given the widespread use of small single-use packs and the environmental concerns arising from their disposal. Pan masala may now only be packaged in paper, paperboard, cellulose, or other naturally derived materials (Photo: Agencies). NEW DELHI: The tiny plastic sachet that has become synonymous with pan masala may finally be on its way out. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified plastic-free packaging norms for the product, a move experts say could further enforcement of an existing ban by allowing the food regulator to act directly against violators.The amended Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2026, require pan masala to be packed only in paper, paperboard, cellulose or other naturally derived materials free from plastic, or in tin or glass containers. The notification prohibits use of materials containing polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, PVC, synthetic polymers, laminates, aluminium foil and metallised layers, and also makes the packaging subject to Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.The rules came into force upon their publication in the gazetteA senior FSSAI official told TOI that pan masala has been specifically included under Schedule IV of packaging regulations to provide Food Business Operators with clear guidance on suitable packaging materials, given the widespread use of small single-use packs and the environmental concerns arising from their disposal. In a representation to PMO in July, a parent sought uniform implementation of the SC judgement NEW DELHI: More than a year after Supreme Court ruled that residence or domicile cannot be the basis for postgraduate medical admissions under the state quota, parents of NEET-PG aspirants say admission rules still vary across states, leaving students with unequal opportunities despite having taken the same national entrance examination.The concerns stem from SC’s Jan 29, 2025, judgement in Dr Tanvi Behl vs Shrey Goel case, which held that residence-based preference in postgraduate medical admissions is not permissible. The court said admissions should be based on NEET-PG scores while allowing only limited institutional preference, meaning a student may receive preference for having graduated from a particular medical college – and not because he or she is a resident or domicile of a state.. Some states appear to have implemented the judgement, while others continue with different eligibility conditions.The dispute primarily concerns private medical colleges, where admissions are conducted through state counselling. Several states prescribe domicile or other state-specific eligibility conditions. “The intention of the SC judgement was to replace residence-based preference with institutional preference. Some states appear to have implemented the judgement, while others continue with different eligibility conditions. If these policies are challenged, the courts will decide whether they are consistent with the judgement.
