An intriguing piece of speculation is making the rounds in Tamil cinema circles, with two of the industry’s most prominent commercial filmmakers, Shankar and AR Murugadoss, reportedly being linked to a potential joint project. Both directors have built decades-long careers around large-scale, mass-appeal cinema, and the mere possibility of them coming together has been enough to get fans talking.
What the reports say
According to a report by Cinema Express, AR Murugadoss is said to be in discussions over a story developed by Shankar’s writing team. However, several key details remain unclear at this stage — including whether the conversations are geared toward a full feature film or are still confined to an early story development phase. There’s also no clarity yet on what role Shankar himself might play in the project, whether limited to writing or extending to a larger creative capacity. As of now, neither filmmaker has issued an official statement confirming or denying the reports.
Where both directors currently stand
Shankar, who most recently helmed Game Changer with Ram Charan and Indian 2 with Kamal Haasan, has been developing his ambitious adaptation of Su Venkatesan’s historical novel Velpari, envisioned as a sprawling three-part film series. Reports have also suggested he may take up an action thriller as an interim project before moving into the larger Velpari venture. AR Murugadoss, meanwhile, recently directed Madharaasi, featuring Sivakarthikeyan, Rukmini Vasanth and Vidyut Jammwal in key roles, and has previously collaborated with major stars including Vijay, Suriya, Ajith Kumar and Rajinikanth.
Could the buzz turn into a real project?
Adding a layer of credibility to the speculation, Murugadoss is also currently attached to an upcoming Hindi action entertainer starring Sunny Deol and Jyotika, keeping his slate busy across languages. Interestingly, Shankar had previously praised Madharaasi, calling it an engaging commercial entertainer and specifically commending Murugadoss’s handling of its multiple narrative threads — a comment that has only added fuel to the current speculation.With both filmmakers juggling significant projects of their own, the buzz around a potential collaboration has certainly piqued fan interest.
