Sameera Reddy reacts to Deepika Padukone’s 8-hour shift row: ‘It’s a luxury for women to ask for it’
Actor Sameera Reddy, who is currently promoting her upcoming film ‘Aakhri Sawal’ with Sanjay Dutt, has shared her perspective on the ongoing debate around 8-hour work shifts in the film industry. For those not in the know, conversation picked up after reports claimed that Deepika Padukone had sought shorter workdays for Spirit and the sequel to ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ following her pregnancy, and her reported exit from the projects further fueled the discussion.Sameera spoke about the complexities of the issue, saying she understands both sides and does not wish to take a firm stance. Known for her humorous and relatable Instagram content with her mother-in-law, the actor explained that every workplace has its own expectations, and it is essential to complete work without placing undue pressure on those who have invested in a project. At the same time, she acknowledged that women, especially new mothers, often face genuine constraints when managing their time. She said during a chat with NDTV, “But that being said, it is a choice. The workplace should also allow one to exercise that choice. I do believe it’s a kind of luxury in this country because it’s still not mandatory or given. So, I feel it’s a luxury for women to ask for right now. It’s not the easiest. You have to balance both. It’s hard.”Reflecting on her own journey, Sameera added, “I didn’t work for a while when I gave birth to my children. It was my choice. So, I can’t take either side. I understand both sides.”When asked whether she would insist on fixed working hours as a mother of two, she explained that she selects projects carefully to ensure she can spend time with her children. She also emphasised the importance of flexibility, sharing, “Every mom goes through this as it’s a hard choice. But to be honest, when I was asked by the Aakhri Sawal makers to do a bit more, I did because I could. Because I know where the producer is coming from. Somewhere, someday, you have to adjust. It’s not every day they ask for it.”Earlier, several actors including Kangana Ranaut, Ananya Panday, and Kareena Kapoor Khan had voiced support for Deepika, backing the idea of more flexible work schedules and improved work-life balance, particularly for new mothers in the industry.Meanwhile, Deepika is currently expecting her second child with Ranveer Singh, after the couple welcomed their daughter Dua in 2024. The duo recently announced the pregnancy with a heartwarming picture featuring Dua holding a pregnancy kit. Despite her pregnancy, Deepika continues to stay busy, shooting for King alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Raaka with Allu Arjun.
