The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Tuesday sent summons to six coal traders who were allegedly involved in a coal smuggling nexus in Bengal. At least three of them were under the radar of central agencies in connection with a multi-state coal smuggling racket. NEW DELHI: As the opposition geared up for a joint meeting to take a collective view on the contentious delimitation bill on the eve of the special Parliament session, Congress Tuesday said the draft constitutional amendment bill doesn’t maintain state-wise proportionality of LS seats, and demanded that women’s quota be done on the existing lower House strength, implementable within a week. Congress’s view, coupled with TN CM Stalin’s “warning”, suggested the opposition may take a hostile stance on the govt agenda, even opposing bills. Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi said, “The bill received Tuesday afternoon was bristling with errors. It is completely silent on the PM’s assurances on maintaining inter-state percentage parity. The delimitation commission, an external quasi-judicial authority, has nowhere been mandated to ensure this.” Inter-state parity refers to concerns that an increase in LS seats would hurt southern and smaller states – a point flagged by K C Venugopal. Party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, “When the intent behind a bill is mischievous and content of it is devious, the extent of damage to parliamentary democracy is enormous.” DMK MP P Wilson said population criteria would “reduce southern states to politically irrelevant entities”. CPM MP John Brittas called it a strategy to reduce southern India to a “political colony of the north”. RJD MP Manoj Jha echoed similar concerns. Sources said all INDIA bloc parties will attend the meeting. NEW DELHI: CBI filed 22 fresh FIRs and raided 77 locations across 8 states and UTs on Tuesday in compliance with Supreme Court’s order to investigate an “unholy nexus” between builders and bank officials cheating innocent homebuyers.“These coordinated search operations are part of a nationwide crackdown. Officials seized incriminating documents, digital devices, and other materials,” said a CBI spokesperson.The raids aimed at gathering crucial evidence to unravel the larger conspiracy involving alleged diversion of funds, financial irregularities, and fraudulent practices in the housing real estate sector, an official said.CBI had earlier filed 28 cases against various builders. “Those cases are under final stages of investigation,” the agency said.Early last year, SC had directed CBI to file seven cases against builders in NCR following petitions from over 1000 homebuyers. Later, the court asked the agency to register six more FIRs to investigate real estate projects in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mohali, and Prayagraj.Most of the cases pertain to NCR projects duping homebuyers through “subvention schemes”. The petitioners have alleged that bank officials disbursed loans to builders under the scheme without due diligence as the projects remained on paper only.CBI has filed 22 FIRs and raided 77 locations following SC directions to probe the unholy nexus between builders and bank officials that defrauded homebuyers. Most cases involve NCR projects under subvention schemes, where banks released loans without due diligence for projects that existed only on paper. NEW DELHI: On the occasion of B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi said the proposed Constitutional amendment related to Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyan (Women’s Reservation Act) is guided by the spirit of “equality and inclusivity” which the Constitution drafted by him emphasised. “Our democracy will become stronger and more vibrant if 2029 Lok Sabha elections and various assembly elections that year are held with women’s reservation fully in place,” the PM said in a letter addressed to women of the country ahead of the three-day special session of Parliament starting Thursday. “And for that, the upcoming legislation in Parliament should be passed. Any further delay will be unfortunate and a gross injustice to the women of India,” Modi said. When women become active participants in policy- and decision-making, the journey towards a ‘Viksit Bharat’ will be strengthened. He stressed that adding more vigour to India’s development trajectory makes women’s participation non-negotiable. The PM said this principle led to passage of the law in 2023 and makes the amendment the need of the hour. With women excelling across fields, he said, increasing their role in legislative bodies has long enjoyed broad consensus. He cited Sardar Patel’s efforts to reserve seats for women in Ahmedabad Municipality and noted India granted equal voting rights at Independence. Efforts over decades fell short. NEW DELHI: A controversy in the US over chemicals in activewear has raised fresh concerns about what Indians are wearing to the gym, with experts warning that the issue goes beyond comfort to potential health risks.”Most activewear is made from plastic-based polymers that can release chemicals with potential endocrine effects, but in India, we lack the tools to measure this exposure. What we do see clearly is skin impact – synthetic, tight clothing in hot conditions often leads to fungal infections, irritation, and higher absorption in areas of natural occlusion like the groin and buttocks,” said Dr Kabir Sardana, a professor of dermatology. The trigger came from an April 13 announcement by Texas attorney general Ken Paxton, who said certain sportswear products are being investigated for chemicals that may interfere with the endocrine system. The development has sharpened focus on endocrine-disrupting chemicals, used in fabrics for stretch, sweat-wicking and odour resistance.In India, where synthetic gym wear has become the norm and regulation of textile chemicals remains patchy, the concern is particularly relevant. Chemicals like PFAS and phthalates – linked globally to hormone disruption – are widely used in textile processing.
