Representative image (ANI) JAMMU: Panic gripped a village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Monday after subsidence caused large cracks in agricultural fields, roads, and residential buildings, prompting district administration to shift the occupants of two severely damaged houses to safer places.Four other houses that have developed cracks have been kept under close observation, and their occupants will be evacuated if needed, an official said.“Besides undertaking relief and precautionary measures in Kotli Kalaban village of Manjakote tehsil, Geological Survey of India has been called to assess the situation,” an official said.Deputy commissioner Abhishek Sharma, SSP Gaurav Sikarwar, and MLA Muzaffar Iqbal Khan visited the affected areas and assured the villagers of all possible help.This is not the first subsidence in the region. Several cases of subsidence have been reported in recent years from Doda, Ramban, Reasi, Poonch, and Rajouri districts, often linked to road construction and other infrastructure projects.On Sept 9 last year, about 50 structures, mostly residential buildings, were damaged due to sinking of land in a village on the slope of a hill in Poonch district.On April 26, 2024, a massive chunk of land sank in Ramban’s Parnote village, destroying 58 houses in just three days, and forcing around 500 residents to move out.Doda and Ramban districts experienced similar subsidence in 2023 and 2024, prompting authorities to form expert committees to investigate the causes and recommend remedial measures.On Feb 4, 2023, authorities had to evacuate 20 families from Nayi Basti area in Doda’s Thathri municipality after subsidence damaged several houses.Get the latest India news and live updates. He also underlined that, in an interconnected world, where energy, food, health, cyber, and economic security are intertwined, building international partnerships was a necessity for the progress and prosperity of humanity.Modi also called upon the world to move from donor-recipient to partnerships based on solidarity and equality, saying the Global South has immense expectations from the world. “More than support, it seeks partnership. We must move beyond the donor-recipient mindset and work as equal partners. We must walk together and not merely alongside one another.”“India believes that the true test of partnership is not what we build for others, but what we enable others to build for themselves. Our development partnerships reflect the same spirit,” he added.This was the first outreach session that Modi and other invited leaders participated in. Earlier in the day, French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed G7 and invited leaders at the summit venue in French resort town of Evian-les-Bains.“Sharing India’s approach to international cooperation, PM said India has always followed the principle of humanity first, and this thought continues to be at the centre of its efforts, be it pursuing action under International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Global Bio-fuel Alliance, Mission LiFE or Ek Ped Maa ke Naam (Plant for Mother) campaign,” said an Indian readout of his speech, adding that this inclusive approach had also led India to be the first responder when natural disasters have struck various parts of the world — be it a cyclone in Sri Lanka, earthquake in Afghanistan, floods in Mozambique or hurricane in Jamaica.Get the latest India news and live updates. (Image used for representational purpose only) NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old NEET aspirant in Rajasthan’s coaching hub of Sikar has allegedly died by suicide, prompting the Congress to renew its attack on the Centre over the ongoing controversy surrounding the medical entrance examination and paper leak allegations.The student, identified as Umesh, was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) while staying in a private residential complex in Sikar. According to police, he was found hanging from the ceiling of his room using a scarf, locally known as a chunni.Officials from Udyog Nagar police station reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. During a search of the room, police recovered a suicide note in which Umesh wrote: “I am going very far away, I don’t know where I am going… Sorry.”The body was later handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.The tragedy comes just days before the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, scheduled for June 21, and amid continuing concerns among students following the cancellation of the original exam over paper leak allegations.Reacting to the incident, senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed shock and offered condolences to the family.“The news of the suicide of 22-year-old NEET aspirant Umesh Mali in Sikar is deeply shocking. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” Gehlot said in a post on X.He linked the incident to the wider controversy surrounding the examination process. “Due to the NEET paper leak, several students–including Pradeep Meghwal from Rajasthan–have taken the extreme step of ending their lives this year.
