Rahul Gandhi seeks SC-monitored probe into police action on students NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday demanded an independent Supreme Court-monitored high-powered committee to investigate the alleged police excesses against students protesting the perpetual paper leaks on July 20. “Students deserve justice. An independent SC monitored high powered committee must be constituted to probe brutalities against our students,” Rahul said in a post on X while sharing a video claiming police brutality during the protest. The remarks came after Rahul had earlier accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being responsible for the police’s alleged excesses against protesters, including the reported firing incident. Rahul demanded the removal of Union home minister Amit Shah and called for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the alleged use of “lethal force” against student protesters, escalating the Opposition’s attack on the government over the police crackdown.Addressing the Lok Sabha, Rahul alleged that Shah either directly authorised the use of pellet guns, shock batons, lathicharge and tear gas against students, making him “culpable of brutalisation” of young protesters, or was unaware of the police action, which, he said, made him “incompetent.””In either case, he has to go,” Rahul said, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the senior minister from the Cabinet.The allegations triggered strong protests from the treasury benches, with Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju demanding that Gandhi either substantiate his claims with evidence or apologise.Rahul Gandhi also blamed RSS for what he described as the problems afflicting the education sector.The government strongly objected to his remarks, with treasury bench members demanding that he either substantiate his allegations or apologise. Nitin Gadkari said that the ethanol blending has been increased progressively in a calibrated manner NEW DELHI: Petroleum ministry has introduced the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme through a “phased, scientifically validated and consultative process”, road transport minister Nitin Gadkari informed Lok Sabha on Thursday. He added that the ethanol blending has been increased progressively in a calibrated manner after creating the necessary production capacity, infrastructure and regulatory framework.In response to a question, the minister said, “The transition to E20 was undertaken only after successful validation of fuel systems, engine durability, drivability, material compatibility, emissions performance and consumer acceptance.” He added that the E20 programme has been developed through an extensive consultative and phased implementation process. Automobile manufacturers, component manufacturers, SIAM, ARAI, vehicle testing agencies, Oil Marketing Companies, ethanol producers, sugar and grain industries and other stakeholders were associated at every stage of policy formulation and implementation.He said laboratory studies, field validation and real-world operating experience have not established adverse impact on vehicle performance due to E20 fuel. “This is evident from the fact that E15+ blended petrol has been in widespread use for over three-and-a-half years and E19-E20 fuel for over two-and-a-half years. More than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars have been operating on these blends without any verified evidence of widespread engine failure or vehicle breakdown attributable to ethanol blending,” Gadkari said.As per the reply, manufacturer service data have also confirmed that there is no abnormal corrosion, wear or reduction in vehicle life due to E20 fuel, and automobile manufacturers continue to honour warranty obligations for vehicles using specification-compliant E20 fuel. Recently, a major vehicle manufacturer had reported servicing 2.84 crore vehicles during FY 2025–26, including about 1.5 crore legacy vehicles, without finding any E20-linked engine damage, abnormal corrosion or reduction in component life. A leading two-wheeler manufacturer has similarly reported no higher incidence of damage in E20-operated vehicles.On the issue mileage loss, the reply said studies by govt agencies and automobile manufacturers indicate that reduction in fuel efficiency in certain E10-designed vehicles is limited to about 2-6%. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday observed that police are “empowered to use pellet guns in exceptional situations” while directing the Centre to preserve the ammunition log of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed at Jantar Mantar.The court’s observation comes at a time when allegations of pellet gun use against NEET protesters during the CJP-led student protest on July 20 have escalated into a political potboiler in Parliament.A Bench of CJI Surya Kant, and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana also directed the Delhi government to provide adequate treatment to those protesters who were injured by alleged firing of pellet guns.The bench also observed that when in extreme violent situations police are permitted to use bullets if violence does not get controlled by lathicharge and tear gas, how can they be barred from using pellet guns if a protest, which has turned violent after being hijacked by miscreants for ulterior purposes. The court said all injured persons during protests should be given proper treatment.The top court, however, questioned petitioner and ex-IPS offier Yashovardhan Azad for seeking ban on use of pellet guns against protesters.Meanwhile, a CRPF post-event analysis has said that all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and anti-riot drills were followed during the July 20 police action against anti-NEET leak protesters, which included the authorised use of “non-lethal” means like pellet gun. CRPF sources told TOI that upon carefully examining the response of its anti-riot unit, Rapid Action Force, it is evident that force gradient was followed, with pump action gun being used only after lower-grade measures like public announcements for crowd dispersal, tear gas and lathicharge failed to effectively control the mob. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray likened Gen Z to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday likened Gen Z to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, saying that even Mughals had called the Maratha warrior a “chuha” (rat), just as the current generation is being called “cockroaches”.Addressing a gathering during a book launch in Mumbai, Thackeray said those who had been dismissed as “cockroaches” belonged to Generation Z, roughly between the ages of 13 and 28 and drew a parallel how Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was only 17 when he captured Torna Fort, while Sant Dnyaneshwar was also very young when he wrote the Dnyaneshwari. “Those who were insulted as ‘cockroaches’ belong to what we now call Generation Z roughly from the ages of thirteen or fourteen to twenty-seven or twenty-eight. Wasn’t Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj just about that age when he captured Torna Fort at seventeen? Even Shivaji Maharaj was called a ‘Chuha’ by Mughal. Wasn’t Sant Dnyaneshwar also very young when he wrote the Dnyaneshwari? Both faced tremendous opposition in their own time,” Thackeray said. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray likened Gen Z to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday likened Gen Z to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, saying that even Mughals had called the Maratha warrior a “chuha” (rat), just as the current generation is being called “cockroaches”.Addressing a gathering during a book launch in Mumbai, Thackeray said those who had been dismissed as “cockroaches” belonged to Generation Z, roughly between the ages of 13 and 28 and drew a parallel how Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was only 17 when he captured Torna Fort, while Sant Dnyaneshwar was also very young when he wrote the Dnyaneshwari. “Those who were insulted as ‘cockroaches’ belong to what we now call Generation Z roughly from the ages of thirteen or fourteen to twenty-seven or twenty-eight. Wasn’t Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj just about that age when he captured Torna Fort at seventeen? Even Shivaji Maharaj was called a ‘Chuha’ by Mughal. Wasn’t Sant Dnyaneshwar also very young when he wrote the Dnyaneshwari? Both faced tremendous opposition in their own time,” Thackeray said.
