(DPR PMO/ANI Photo) KUALA LUMPUR: India and Malaysia inked 11 MoUs in what was described by both Anwar Ibrahim and Narendra Modi as a “critical, strategic and vital exchange” for reinforcing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, at Seri Perdana, the official residential complex of the Malaysian PM.Key agreements include Exchange of Notes (EoN) on semiconductors, a sector where both countries are aggressively partnering to boost the value chain, including AI and R&D. At the press briefing after the signing of the deals, an agreement between India’s NPCI International Ltd (NIPL) and Malaysia’s PayNet was announced. “Strategic Ties And Trade Strengthened”: PM Modi Exchanges MoUs With Malaysian PM “It is not yet operational owing to some necessary technical alignments,” said P Kumaran, secretary, East. He added that there is also a broader project for multi-point connectivity called Project Nexus; which India, Malaysia, Singapore and a few other countries in the region are working on. This will give direct connectivity from one country to all the other countries partaking in the Nexus.On the question of a timeline for operationalising the settlement of trade in local currencies, Kumaran said, “It is a matter of priority for both sides and discussions are ongoing between the two regulatory bodies, RBI and Bank Negara. We are going to be working very actively on this in the coming few months.”On defence, the two PMs emphasised their intent to work closer and expressed satisfaction at the outcomes of the Malaysia-India Defence Cooperation Committee (MIDCOM) and its subcommittees, including the terms of reference on establishment of a Strategic Affairs Working Group (SAWG) and Su-30 Forum.Importantly, India’s three-decade experience with Su-30s and its proximity to Malaysia makes it the best country for its upgrade and maintenance. This also encompasses a broader defence industrial agenda beyond transactional procurement.Other agreements include areas like disaster management, the fight against corruption, healthcare, training in Ayurveda, anti-terrorism, UN Peacekeeping as well as the Framework Agreement on the Big Cats Alliance. Pollution control papers may be valid for 3 years for new vehicles NEW DELHI: Owners of BSVI private vehicles, up to six years old, will not need to renew Pollution Under Control Certificates every year, as govt is planning to extend their validity period to three years. However, BSVI vehicles aged between six and 10 years will be required to renew their PUCC annually and those above 10 years every six months.The move is intended to reduce burden on owners, considering that BS-VI vehicles are significantly cleaner than their predecessors. In case of vehicles that are up to six years old, PUCC validity will be for two years. Thenorms for BS-VI commercial vehicles that are over six years old would be the same as those for private vehicles.They said the changes were proposed keeping in mind the contribution of vehicular emission to air pollution and also to disincentivise people from keeping old vehicles. “The process for PUCC is also being improved to ensure there is no manipulation in readings,” said an official.A former joint secretary in road transport ministry welcomed the proposal, as new BS-VI vehicles have less emission. UP NEET aspirant dies by suicide A 19-year-old NEET aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh days after appearing for the NEET re-test. Police said she had been struggling with stress related to the examination.The deceased, identified as Chanchal Bharti from Chaupariya Kanchanpura village, had appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) retake on June 21, PTI reported quoting the family.Police said family members found her unconscious at home while they were engaged in routine work. She was taken to a district hospital, where doctors declared her dead.Kotwali Station House Officer (SHO) Nirbhay Singh told PTI that a NEET question booklet was recovered from the spot. A handwritten message on it read: “I cannot do anything, my brother.”SHO informed that Police have seized the booklet and the suspected suicide note, and Forensic and handwriting examinations will be conducted.Chanchal’s father, a tailor, had continued to support his children’s education despite financial constraints. NSA Ajit Doval expresses ‘cautious optimism’ over US-Iran peace deal (Image/PTI) NEW DELHI: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Tuesday said that India welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the US and Iran expressing ‘cautious optimism’ that the agreement could restore regional stability, strengthen energy security and ease global supply chain disruptions.Speaking at the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting, Doval said, “India welcomes the MOU reached between the US and Iran. We have got cautious optimism, and we hope that it will work. It will help energy security. The opening of the Strait of Hormuz is a very welcome development.”His remarks came after Washington and Tehran signed the peace deal digitally pausing the months going war and laying the groundwork for broader negotiations following weeks of conflict in West Asia and a fragile ceasefire. The agreement is expected to address issues related to maritime security, regional stability and Iran’s nuclear programme.Highlighting the economic significance of the deal, Doval said improved access through the Strait of Hormuz could help reduce disruptions in global trade and critical commodity supplies.”It will remove supply chain bottlenecks and many of the shortages in the field of fertilisers and chemicals, et cetera, will be met with. And the freedom of navigation that will be available to the countries in the region and beyond will probably also greatly improve our economic prosperity,” he said.Addressing the broader global security situation, Doval said the world was facing an increasingly complex and uncertain environment marked by military conflicts, economic challenges and rapid technological disruptions.”We are meeting at a very tumultuous time. The world is beleaguered by military conflicts and complex security problems,” he said.”It is facing geopolitical uncertainties, economic strains and disruptive technology. Not only are the threats compounding, but the instruments and institutional mechanisms are increasingly finding themselves inadequate to resolve or mitigate these conflicts,” he added.Doval also voiced concern over the weakening of multilateral institutions and called for greater cooperation among emerging economies.”Multilateralism is on the decline. BRICS was conceived as an informal grouping of emerging economies for a more multipolar world order. It was to advance economic cooperation and strengthen the voice of the Global South,” he said.”It also envisioned reforms in global governance and institutional improvements. BRICS is a very special coalition of countries that believe in peace, progress, development and cooperation. I’m happy to see that it is gaining strength day by day,” Doval added.Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also welcomed the understanding reached between the US and Iran and expressed hope that it would help restore peace and stability in West Asia.”I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” PM Modi had said in a post on X.”India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce. We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” he added.The latest agreement followed talks in Switzerland, which US Vice President JD Vance described as “a very productive 36 hours”. In response, Mamata Banerjee moved swiftly to reorganise the party structure and reinforce her control over the organisation she founded nearly three decades ago.Under the new structure, Mamata Banerjee continues as the party chairperson, while former Rajya Sabha MP Subrata Bakshi has been appointed vice-chairperson. Her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, retains his position as national general secretary.Senior leaders Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen have been named joint secretaries, while Mamata loyalists Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra have been included as members of the national working committee.The reshuffle comes a day after a rebel faction led by Bengal’s leader of opposition Ritabrata Banerjee appointed senior leader Arup Roy as chairperson of what it called the “real” TMC.However, the dissident camp stopped short of completely sidelining Mamata Banerjee. Ritabrata Banerjee said the veteran leader would be welcome to join the faction as its “chief adviser”.”Members unanimously elected Arup Roy as chairperson.
