Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Sikkim NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a two-day visit to Sikkim, on Tuesday shared pictures of himself playing football with youngsters in Gangtok.Dressed in a blue sports jacket featuring the tricolour, PM Modi is seen walking alongside a group of young footballers in matching kits, each carrying a football, in what appeared to be a casual morning session on the field. PM Modi plays football with youngsters”Nothing like playing some football with my young friends in Sikkim on a lovely Gangtok morning!,” the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X, sharing images of the interaction.In another post, he added, “Clearly, an energising football session with these youngsters!”The informal sporting moment comes amid PM Modi’s official engagements in the Himalayan state. He is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony marking 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood and launch development projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore.As part of his itinerary, the Prime Minister will also visit the orchidarium at Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park in Gangtok, developed as a world-class orchid experience centre.Tight security arrangements have been put in place across the state capital and nearby areas for the visit.Later in the day, PM Modi will head to Paljor Stadium to participate in the statehood celebrations, where he is also expected to address a gathering. The projects to be launched span sectors including infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, urban development, environment, tourism and agriculture.On Monday, PM Modi had earlier led a roadshow in Gangtok on Monday evening after arriving in the state.He was initially scheduled to attend the 50th statehood celebrations at Paljor Stadium on May 29 last year but could not reach due to inclement weather. Representational image Hyderabad: More than 14 years after a retired employee of the Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd (HAL) was booked in a criminal case – approving a sub-standard drug – the Telangana high court quashed all charges against him and even imposed a fine on the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for implicating him without enough evidence. Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti observed that his prosecution is a “sheer abuse of the process of law” and a violation of fundamental rights and ordered CDSCO to pay “exemplary costs (fine)” of Rs 50,000 to the 75-year-old former zonal manager of HAL. It found that the officer retired months before the drug was even manufactured. The case dates back to 2010 when drug inspectors seized samples of Roxythromycin tablets (used to treat bacterial infections), manufactured by a private pharma company and supplied through CDSCO from the Central Hospital, South Central Railways, at Secunderabad and found that they were manufactured in March 2009 and weren’t of “standard quality”. Following a report from a govt laboratory, the drug authorities filed a criminal complaint in 2012, and named the petitioner as the primary accused responsible for the lapse in quality. However, during legal proceedings, the high court found that the petitioner retired from service on Jan 31, 2009 – two months before the substandard batch was produced. The HC noted that the authorities relied on old records to link him to the company’s operations, ignoring the fact that he is no longer an employee. (PTI Photo/Shahbaz Khan) New Delhi: Terming a two-decade-old jurisprudence giving primacy to right of accused to fair and speedy trial and their release to avoid prolonged pretrial incarceration as “old-fashioned”, Supreme Court on Monday said the present jurisprudence gives equal weightage to justice for victims of crime.The remark came from a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi on a petition filed by DS Chhokar – a former Haryana MLA and realtor in custody for 16 months for allegedly siphoning hundreds of crores of rupees from homebuyers’ deposits against promised flats – seeking regular bail after having been turned down by the Punjab and Haryana HC.Homebuyers’ interest more important than ED response: SCWhen senior advocate Narender Hooda argued about long incarceration and rights of accused, the CJI-led bench said for long jurisprudence has favoured rights of the accused. “That is old-fashioned. The new jurisprudence is for protection of rights of those who have suffered because of crimes,” the SC said.The bench said ensuring homebuyers’ interest is of paramount importance. Instead of seeking response from Enforcement Directorate on Chhokar’s bail plea, SC asked him to present a comprehensive plan to repay homebuyers “whom you have ex-facie duped”.The Chhokar family, which owns several real estate firms, undertook the project of building 1,500 flats on a 10-acre plot at Gurgaon’s Sector 68 in 2017.
