The ministry said hydrogen fuel cell technology “generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen, with water vapour as the only emission,” making it “a clean alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based traction systems.”With the initiative, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China and the United States that are exploring hydrogen-powered rail transportation. The Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana has been selected as the pilot route for operations. An indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has also been established at Jind for the trainset. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the required licence for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas at the site.According to the ministry, a hydrogen compression system has been installed for refuelling operations along with technical support and critical spares “to ensure reliable and fail-safe functioning.” A standby compressor unit is also being arranged. The minister further said that safety sensors, including “hydrogen leak detectors and flame detectors” installed at the hydrogen production, storage and dispensing facility, will be regularly inspected and cleaned to ensure safe operations.Indian Railways has also put in place operation and maintenance manuals for the hydrogen trainset and hydrogen plant, approved by RDSO, along with safety provisions, audits and standard operating procedures for the maintenance facility at Shakurbasti. The approval includes “24×7 monitoring of the hydrogen refuelling system, deployment of trained and certified personnel for critical operations, and regular inspection and maintenance schedules.”During the initial phase, trained technical staff will accompany the train “to ensure smooth functioning.”The project reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to “innovation, energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable transportation” and supports India’s clean energy and net-zero carbon emission goals, the statement added.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Bakrid wishes, messages and eid 2026!End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosAir India Temporarily Reduces Domestic Flight Frequencies Amid Fuel Price Surge, West Asia TensionsRathan U Kelkar’s Appointment As Kerala CM Secretary Triggers Political ControversyEbola Alert In Karnataka After Ugandan Traveller Shifted To Bengaluru Isolation Facility | WatchSupreme Court Upholds Election Commission’s Power To Conduct Special Roll Revision Drive | Watch‘Should I Quit Or Try Again?’: UPSC Aspirants React After Unpredictable Prelims 2026 PaperRajasthan High Court Upholds Asaram’s Life Sentence In 2013 Minor Rape CaseIndia Warns Pakistan At UNSC: “There Are Consequences For Cross-Border Terrorism”ED Raids Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Homes in CMRL Corruption CasePig Slogan Sparks Outrage In Mira Road Housing Society Clash During Bakrid PrepSiddaramaiah Likely To Step Down As Karnataka CM Amid Congress Leadership Transition Buzz123Photostories10 powerful psychological tricks that work better than arguing5 places on Earth where you can experience all four seasons in one road tripFrom running away from home to undergoing plastic surgery at 11 and a ‘fake marriage’ with Ritesh Singh: Rakhi Sawant reveals shocking details5 signs you’re absorbing other people’s negative energy, and how to stop itTop 7 hill destinations in India emerging as real estate investment hotspots5 animals more dangerous to humans than sharks (and some will surprise you)5 money habits of rich couplesHow to make gut-friendly Curd Rice for summer lunchAB de Villiers’, aka ‘Mr. 360’, multi-crore mansion in South Africa is defined by classy glass interiors, open spaces, and cricket memoriesAnanya Pandey’s home channelises the ‘dream girl’ home energy with a modern twist: 5 art inspirations to steal123Hot PicksAIADMKByju RaveendranMira Road protestSiddaramaiahKTET December ResultTushar KumarAir India flightTop TrendingByju’s founder RaveendranBank holiday todayIndian Air ForceDelhi temperatureRed BalloonBengaluru Ebola CasePune curfewRahul GandhiHDFC ShareIndian Rupee
