Photo credit: ANI NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the Congress of surrendering to “conspiratorial forces” during the Partition era, claiming that efforts had once been made to separate the whole of Bengal from India and merge it with Pakistan. PM Modi attended Paschimbanga Divas (West Bengal Day) celebrations at Tarakeswar in Hooghly district.The Prime Minister said Bengal had endured immense hardship during the Partition but had preserved its identity despite attempts to divide“Congress bowed before conspiratorial forces when efforts were being made to make whole of Bengal part of Pakistan,” PM Modi said, as quoted by PTI.Addressing the gathering, PM Modi linked the observance of West Bengal Day with the state’s historical struggle during Partition. Under the latest instalment, more than Rs 18,880 crore will be transferred directly to over 9.44 crore farmers across the country.The Prime Minister said the state was witnessing a renewed sense of confidence and pride. “There is now a new freshness in the air of West Bengal. A new fragrance is wafting from every particle here; it feels as if Bengal has now broken free from its shackles,” he said. “As if the restoration of Bengal’s pride has begun. Today’s event is a witness; the launch of these projects is a testament that our Bengal has set to work building its new future.”West Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, who welcomed the Prime Minister at the event, also paid tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee and announced plans to install a 125-foot statue of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder in Kolkata as part of his birth anniversary commemorations.Get the latest India news and live updates. As a result, the acreage deficit could be reduced by only 1% in the past one week, with paddy, the main kharif crop, still reporting 4% less acreage compared to the corresponding period last year. Aug rains will improve water storage in reservoirs, which is a good augury for hydro-power potential being utilised and a back-up being in place for the next sowing season. As of Sunday, as many as 12 states have reported high rain deficits of 20% and more.IMD on Sunday, however, predicted a rise in rainfall activity over Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar from Aug 13 onwards due to possible formation of a low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal and Bengal-Bangladesh coasts around Thursday. This may, to some extent, revive sowing of paddy and maize in Bihar and Jharkhand. Sopore Police conducts searches at 26 locations in UAPA case against Jamaat-e-Islami SRINAGAR: Police searched 26 locations across Sopore in north Kashmir on Sunday in a coordinated crackdown on banned Jamaat-e-Islami J&K, seizing documents, literature and electronic devices as part of a probe into its alleged links to terrorist outfits and youth radicalisation.The search targeted residential and other premises linked to Jamaat-e-Islami J&K members and activists. No arrest was reported till filing of this report. “The operation was conducted in accordance with due legal procedure and prescribed protocols,” police said.Police said the seized material was being examined to establish further linkages and activities connected with the proscribed organisation. The operation was part of efforts to dismantle networks linked to banned organisations, separatist activities and terrorist funding.Distinct from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Jamaat-e-Islami J&K has a history tied to regional separatism and has long had a support base in Sopore. Union government first declared it an “unlawful association” in Feb 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
