(Photo credit: agencies) NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP and Mamata Banerjee loyalist Kalyan Banerjee on Thursday gave an ultimatum to the party supremo claiming that she “will have to choose if she is with her nephew Abhishek Banerjee or a senior party workers like me.”“I am with Mamata Banerjee, but Didi will have to decide if she is with Abhishek or the TMC. Mamata di has to decide first. If she cannot run the party without Abhishek, then I will not be there,” the four-time Lok Sabha MP and senior advocate told IANS.Speaking to PTI, Kalyan Banerjee said, “I told Derek to tell Mamata: choose between Abhishek Banerjee or a worker like me.”The sharp remarks come amid growing tensions within the Trinamool Congress following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal and signs of unrest within the party.The senior advocate also announced that he would no longer appear on behalf of Abhishek Banerjee in legal matters. His decision came after a petition filed by Abhishek challenging a summons issued by the West Bengal CID in the legislators’ signature mismatch case.On Thursday, Abhishek was represented by advocate Ayan Bhattacharya before the vacation bench of Justice Kaushik Chanda in the Calcutta High Court.Explaining his decision, Kalyan Banerjee alleged that Abhishek had shown repeated disrespect towards him despite his efforts to secure an urgent hearing in the matter.“I have decided to refrain from any legal matters concerning Abhishek Banerjee. His continuing arrogance is unimaginable. Yesterday, I raised his matter at the bench of Justice Chanda and pleaded for an urgent hearing. Accordingly, Thursday was fixed as the date of hearing. But last night, he called up my son and said that some other advocate, who is much junior to me in the legal profession, will represent him at the hearing on Thursday,” Kalyan Banerjee told reporters.‘He thinks everyone is beneath him’The TMC MP launched a scathing attack on Abhishek Banerjee, accusing him of arrogance and a lack of respect for senior leaders.“He thinks everyone is beneath him, as if everyone is merely an employee from Camac Street. I have been in this profession for 45 years. Who does not know me as a senior advocate? Leave aside this court, even in the Supreme Court people know me. But he has become so arrogant… does not respect anyone. That is why I have stepped aside,” he said.Kalyan Banerjee also alleged that he had spent considerable time preparing the case only to learn later that another lawyer had been engaged.“After that, nobody said anything the entire day. I spent the night preparing the case. Even today, you can see that I am going everywhere, taking risks and doing my work. Referring to the state’s changing image, he added, “Uttar Pradesh was once known as the crime capital of the country. Today, the facts and figures speak for themselves.”The DGP pointed to growing investor confidence in the state, saying Uttar Pradesh has attracted investments worth over Rs 34 lakh crore.”There is now reverse migration, and the investment coming into the state speaks volumes about the confidence that captains of industry and financial markets have in Uttar Pradesh and its governance,” he said. He pointed that robbery cases have declined by around 80 per cent, while incidents of dacoity have fallen by nearly 90 per cent.”The latest NCRB statistics show that murder cases have come down substantially, while crime against women has also reduced drastically, despite claims made by political opponents,” he said.The DGP also highlighted the success of Operation Conviction, launched in 2023, claiming that the initiative had led to over 1.2 lakh convictions.”From 2023 to 2025, unprecedented positive work has been done. There have been 1.2 lakh convictions and 79 death penalties awarded,” he said.Encounters subject to multiple layers of scrutinyResponding to questions about police encounters, the DGP said every encounter is followed by mandatory legal and administrative checks. He stressed that safeguards laid down by the Supreme Court are strictly followed.”Firstly, there is a magisterial inquiry. Then there is an investigation, and that investigation is scrutinised by the court of law. These three processes are mandatory,” he said.He added that if any party feels aggrieved by a police action, they have the right to file an FIR, including allegations of murder, which would then be investigated by a separate police station or agency.AI revolutionising policing in Uttar PradeshThe DGP also highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in policing.”YAKSH is an AI-enabled application that has brought about a revolution in policing,” he said.The platform integrates criminal records, facial recognition systems, voice samples and crime analytics to help investigators identify suspects and patterns more efficiently.According to the DGP, these tools are significantly improving the police force’s ability to prevent and solve crimes, and could serve as a model for other states as well.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday termed the reports claiming any merger with the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC “totally baseless”, putting an end to the buzz amid mass exodus from the Trinamool. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “seat chori” after a huge number of MLAs and MPs rebelled against the TMC leadership, softening their stance towards the ruling party.”Making MPs of other parties resign and join BJP is like ‘seat-chori’,” PTI cited Venugopal saying.He added that there were “talks between TMC and Congress leadership on strengthening INDIA alliance”.TMC is grappling with internal discord, factional infighting, and a series of resignations by its Rajya Sabha members.Earlier in the day, TMC MP Prakash Chik Baraik stepped down from the Rajya Sabha, becoming the third party MP to resign within a week. NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday termed the reports claiming any merger with the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC “totally baseless”, putting an end to the buzz amid mass exodus from the Trinamool. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “seat chori” after a huge number of MLAs and MPs rebelled against the TMC leadership, softening their stance towards the ruling party.”Making MPs of other parties resign and join BJP is like ‘seat-chori’,” PTI cited Venugopal saying.He added that there were “talks between TMC and Congress leadership on strengthening INDIA alliance”.TMC is grappling with internal discord, factional infighting, and a series of resignations by its Rajya Sabha members.Earlier in the day, TMC MP Prakash Chik Baraik stepped down from the Rajya Sabha, becoming the third party MP to resign within a week.
