Phogat accused the authorities of shielding the former BJP MP throughout the case NEW DELHI: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat said the women wrestlers would appeal against the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She alleged that “the entire state machinery, the government, and the system have been working to protect Brij Bhushan” since the beginning of the case.In a statement issued after the verdict on Monday, Phogat accused the authorities of shielding the former BJP MP throughout the case and confirmed that the wrestlers had instructed their lawyers to appeal.”We had to muster a great deal of courage to take to the streets and get an FIR registered against a powerful leader of the ruling party. Using the influence of the government and his own political clout, Brij Bhushan intimidated several girls into withdrawing their names from the case. Yet, several women wrestlers stood firm and continued fighting against Brij Bhushan in court,” she wrote.Expressing disappointment over the verdict, Phogat said, “We are deeply saddened that the court did not find Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh guilty of the sexual harassment allegations brought by the women wrestlers.”She went on to allege that, “From the very beginning, the entire state machinery, the government, and the system have been working to protect Brij Bhushan.” Announcing the next legal step, Phogat added, “The women wrestlers have instructed their lawyers to appeal against this verdict, and the appeal will be filed as soon as possible. NEW DELHI: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat said the women wrestlers would appeal against the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. According to preliminary estimates, 165 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged, affecting 3,596 farmers.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts for all 14 districts in the state. Orange alerts are in place for Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, while Palakkad, Thrissur, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram remain under a yellow alert.The weather office has forecast isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds of up to 60 kmph.Authorities have urged people living in low-lying and riverside areas to remain alert as water levels in major rivers continue to rise. SC hears plea on Jantar Mantar as the protest venue site NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking an alternative protest venue in Delhi, with the petitioner arguing that Jantar Mantar is no longer suitable for demonstrations because they inconvenience local residents and disrupt essential services.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued notices to the Centre and other authorities and asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to seek instructions on the issues raised.The PIL, filed by Satish Chand Kaushik, contends that protests at Jantar Mantar create problems for local residents by affecting access, movement and the supply of essential goods and medical services.During the hearing, the Chief Justice said the plea raised important concerns.”It has been stated in the plea that Jantar Mantar is not a proper site anymore for such protests due to ingress and egress issues. Supply of medical essentials etc. I think this is important… Please take instructions, Mr Solicitor. Issue notice and list this separately,” the CJI said.The petitioner’s counsel also referred to a proposed political march and urged the court to ensure that ‘another July 20 incident should be avoided’.The bench, however, declined to comment on the proposed event.”They know how to handle it. If they cannot, come to us for mishandling. SC hears plea on Jantar Mantar as the protest venue site NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking an alternative protest venue in Delhi, with the petitioner arguing that Jantar Mantar is no longer suitable for demonstrations because they inconvenience local residents and disrupt essential services.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued notices to the Centre and other authorities and asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to seek instructions on the issues raised.The PIL, filed by Satish Chand Kaushik, contends that protests at Jantar Mantar create problems for local residents by affecting access, movement and the supply of essential goods and medical services.During the hearing, the Chief Justice said the plea raised important concerns.”It has been stated in the plea that Jantar Mantar is not a proper site anymore for such protests due to ingress and egress issues. Supply of medical essentials etc. I think this is important… Please take instructions, Mr Solicitor. Issue notice and list this separately,” the CJI said.The petitioner’s counsel also referred to a proposed political march and urged the court to ensure that ‘another July 20 incident should be avoided’.The bench, however, declined to comment on the proposed event.”They know how to handle it. If they cannot, come to us for mishandling.
