Union home minister Amit Shah (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday strongly trashed the rumours spreading like wildfire over a purported video of controversial ex-TMC leader Humayun Kabir allegedly claiming a “Rs 1,000 crore deal” with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to dislodge Mamata Banerjee’s ruling Trinamool in West Bengal elections.Amit Shah, camping in Bengal to leave no stone unturned in the high-voltage polls, said Kabir and the BJP can never align, like the North and the South Pole.Addressing a press conference after releasing the BJP’s manifesto for the Bengal polls, Shah accused Mamata Banerjee’s party of “manufacturing political conspiracies”.”You do not know Mamata Banerjee’s capabilities. She can make 2,000 such videos. Humayun Kabir and the BJP are like the North Pole and the South Pole. We can never be together,” Shah was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.The Union Home Minister said the BJP would rather sit in the opposition for 20 years than forge an alliance with Humayun Kabir, who came to the spotlight for pledging to build Babri Masjid in Bengal.”We would rather sit in the opposition for 20 years than sit with those who talk about building a Babri Masjid in Bengal,” Amit Shah said.Kabir, too, denied the allegations and described the video as fabricated and generated through artificial intelligence.”I have not entered into any agreement with anyone. The clip circulated by the Trinamool Congress does not show who was sitting across from me or in what context the remarks were made,” he said.He also sought to turn the tables on the ruling party by invoking the Narada sting case.”Firhad Hakim and Sougata Roy were seen taking money in the Narada videos. What happened to that case?” he asked.Kabir had on Thursday threatened to move court against TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and minister Firhad Hakim if they failed to substantiate the allegation of a multi-crore deal.Even as he dismissed the controversy, Kabir made it clear that he had no intention of retreating from the electoral battle.”I was born alone and will fight alone. I will not retreat from the battle I have begun,” he said. The controversy was triggered by a purported 19-minute video circulated by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday, which it claimed showed Kabir referring to a secret understanding with the BJP.In the video, whose authenticity PTI could not independently verify, a person resembling Kabir was allegedly heard claiming proximity to Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The individual was also heard saying he was prepared to go to “any extent” to remove Mamata Banerjee from power and had received Rs 200 crore in advance as part of a larger Rs 1,000 crore arrangement. The TMC cited the video to allege that Kabir’s anti-Mamata stance and his efforts to build a Muslim political front were part of a covert BJP strategy to split minority votes in key districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, and Birbhum. The BJP, however, moved swiftly to distance itself from Kabir.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday accused the BJP of using the Election Commission during bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, saying that the party uses institutions when it begins to lose on real issues.“Election commissions are working at the behest of the BJP. Of all the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has worked on the directions of the BJP. When the BJP starts to lose on real issues, it hides behind institutions to carry out its attacks,” he said during a visit to Rajasthan. In the final voter list of Uttar Pradesh released on Friday after the Special Intensive Revision, the electorate has increased by over 84 lakh. Chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa said the final voter list now has 13.39 crore voters, up from 12.55 crore in the draft roll published in January.Rinwa said the process involved hearings and verification, and stressed that no voter’s name was removed without due process. “If a name present in the draft roll is missing in the final list, it is either due to a Form-6 application or a decision taken by the ERO after due hearing,” he said.He added that political parties were involved throughout the process. A total of 107 complaints were received from parties, most of them from the Samajwadi Party, and all were addressed.Rinwa also said that those not satisfied with the final list can file an appeal before the district magistrate within 15 days, and further approach the Chief electoral officer if needed.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. . Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday participated in a signature campaign at Delhi University’s (DU) Faculty of Arts in support of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women’s Reservation Act), where she highlighted the need to enhance women’s participation in governance and policymaking.Speaking on the act, Gupta said, “I often wonder why we all need this reservation. Every person, every woman, every daughter may not be able to reach this far on their own through normal courses. But today, women should play a much bigger role in running this country, in administration, in policy-making.” Gupta said meaningful change can be achieved only when women occupy decision-making positions, enabling them to address issues that directly affect society, families and their own lives. She highlighted the Delhi government initiatives such as Lakhpati Bitiya and Anmol schemes, describing them as outcomes of sensitive and inclusive policy-making aimed at women’s empowerment and strengthening social security. The event showcased women’s leadership and equal representation, with messages like “It’s time for women to lead”, and “Empowered women, prosperous nation”.”I believe that when women come forward, become MLAs, ministers, and chief ministers, only then will it be possible to bring about change in the system,” Gupta asserted.Calling the legislation a historic step, the chief minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its passage, saying the law furthers the cause from “Beti Bachao” (protect women) to “Beti Badhao” (empower women).”Through this platform, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the prime minister for the monumental effort he undertook to introduce this legislation. He strove to bring every political party onto a single platform, recognising the magnitude of the revolution this would spark in our nation,” she asserted.Gupta noted that the demand for greater political representation for women dates back decades. Tracing its roots to 1931, she said the law enacted in 2023 reflects a long and persistent struggle, adding that ensuring its effective implementation is now a collective responsibility. She urged the youth to actively support the initiative and help turn it into a mass movement, saying true democratic strength lies in equal participation in decision-making.Expressing confidence in the law’s impact, Gupta said it would redefine political representation in the country and help build a stronger, more balanced and progressive democracy.Following the campaign, Gupta interacted informally with students and women faculty members at a tea stall on campus, where she listened to their views, experiences and suggestions. She said such open and direct communication between public representatives and citizens makes policy-making more effective and people-centric.”The enthusiasm of female students and women on campus for this signature campaign and women’s reservation is a message in itself… The steps moving forward in this direction in Parliament on April 16 will give new direction and new confidence to the dreams, struggles, and aspirations of crores of mothers, sisters, and daughters of the country,” the chief minister wrote on X.She asserted that this step toward one-third representation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will give new strength to the daughters of the country.
