Medical device makers set for quicker clearances NEW DELHI: Manufacturers of blood pressure monitors, cardiac stents, hip and knee implants and other medical devices could soon get regulatory approvals up to 25 days faster, with the Centre proposing changes to streamline the licensing process while retaining existing quality, safety and performance standards. Union health ministry has issued draft amendments to Medical Devices Rules, 2017, proposing to shorten manufacturing licence approval timelines and prescribe fixed timelines for every stage of regulatory scrutiny. The draft notification has been placed in public domain for stakeholder comments. Under the proposal, time taken to grant manufacturing licences for Class B medical devices, including blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters and hypodermic needles, would be reduced from 140 days to 115 days. For Class C and Class D medical devices, including cardiac stents, hip and knee implants and other orthopaedic implants, the approval timeline would be cut from 105 days to 90 days.Get the latest India news and live updates. PM Modi honoured with ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ by Seychelles (Image/PTI) NEW DELHI: India and Seychelles signed nine agreements, including an extradition treaty to combat transnational crime, as PM Modi held bilateral talks with President Patrick Herminie, saying India’s vision is to turn Indian Ocean into an ocean of opportunity and that both countries stood for more inclusive development. At Seychelles’ National Assembly, Modi underscored the “shared values of democracy, rule of law and people-centric governance that guide the two countries”. Modi sought fair, responsible and equitable climate action as he stressed that the Global South, especially island nations, was bearing the brunt of climate change. Maritime security, development cooperation, clean energy, health, crime prevention and people-to-people ties dominated the agenda with the President appreciating India’s special economic package of 5 million, comprising 5 million in a rupee-denominated line of credit and million in grant aid, to support priority projects.India and Seychelles signed an MoU for an umbrella line of credit for Rs 1,250 crore. “India envisions an Indian Ocean where maritime security is accompanied by increased economic prosperity, where our partnerships are based on mutual respect and trust, not size, and where we move together, not side-by-side, with every country,” Prime Minister Modi said. noted that mutual trust and close cooperation have shaped a robust partnership spanning development cooperation, maritime security, technology, innovation, health and capacity building. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening the relationship, proposing direct shipping links, increased trade in local currencies and greater connectivity to promote trade and tourism. India and Seychelles also discussed a comprehensive economic partnership agreement. In his National Assembly address, Modi said the Global South is most impacted by climate change. “Its effects are already visible on our coastlines, in the marine ecosystem, in weather patterns, and in our communities,” he said. PM Modi reiterated that countries which had contributed the least to climate change should not bear the greatest burden of its consequences, and stressed that climate action must be guided by “fairness, responsibility and equity”. “This is the essence of climate justice,” he said, adding India would continue working with Seychelles to ensure that the concerns of Small Island Developing States received the attention they deserved. PM said India and Seychelles shared the vision of a more inclusive world and international institutions that reflected contemporary realities. He reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the interests of the Global South. Modi’s visit coincided with both the 50th anniversary of India-Seychelles diplomatic relations and Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee, with the PM participating in the National Day Parade on June 28 2026. Her rivals termed her remarks “a tactic to exert pressure” in a bid to disrupt the current political situation in the country, reports Ahsan Tasnim. Her remarks also come at a time when political circles in Dhaka are abuzz with reports of a resurgence of her banned Awami League in both rural and urban areas — a perceived revival that prompted the Tarique Rahman govt to allow its members to contest local polls, albeit only as independent candidates.Declaring that Awami League is not merely an organisation but a “force” and that any attack on minorities is an attack on Bangladesh’s independence, Hasina, in an interview to NDTV, said, “My return is not a question of personal ambition. It is tied to a far larger question: the political rights of the people of Bangladesh, the restoration of democracy, the rule of law, and the spirit of our Liberation War.” On Hasina asserting “I will return to my country this year”, members of governing BNP and opposition Jamaat-eIslami (JeI) sought to remind her of the death sentence she faces in “crimes against humanity” cases and the several trials pending against her.“I do not fear death. Riya Batra suffered back injuries after deboarding Garg Aviation’s Tecnam P2006T aircraft during a night training sortie Friday. The civil aviation regulator has off-rostered the instructor from flying training duties pending the probe and barred use of aircraft VTNBV until the investigation is complete. DGCA is investigating whether she stepped out on her own or was asked to do so before the engines were shut down. “After landing, the trainee pilot deboarded the aircraft with the engine running,” DGCA said. “The cadet received injuries to her back after being hit by the running propeller.” A note submitted at the private hospital where Batra was admitted by a “friend” said she had suffered injuries in a Scooty fall, raising further questions that investigators are expected to examine. While boarding and deboarding trainer aircraft with propellers running is prohibited, aviation industry insiders alleged some flying training organisations in India and abroad swap trainees between sorties without shutting down engines to save time. What happened in this case will be determined by the probe. Garg Aviation safety manager Group Captain Rajeev Bhalla said the aircraft landed around 8.40pm and was slowing to a halt when Batra “attempted to get out of the aircraft before both engines had been switched off”, contrary to standard operating procedure. Flight instructor Captain Raunak, who has about 5,000 flying hours, saw her trying to step out, “immediately shouted at her to stop and simultaneously switched off the engines”, Bhalla said. Before the propeller stopped rotating, it struck Batra on her back. Emergency medical assistance was arranged before she was shifted to a private hospital.
