ED questions TMC MLA in Kolkata land-grabbing case; I-T raids home, poll office ahead of Bengal vote NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its probe into Trinamool Congress MLA Debasish Kumar in an alleged land-grabbing and illegal construction case in Kolkata, questioning him multiple times while the Income Tax Department conducted raids at his residence and election office on Friday.Kumar, who is seeking re-election from the Rashbehari Assembly constituency in south Kolkata, was summoned by the ED on April 1, 3 and 9. He appeared before investigators at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake on all three occasions.Income Tax officials on Friday searched Kumar’s residence on Manoharpukur Road and his election office, with simultaneous operations beginning around 6 am.The ED investigation is linked to around 17 FIRs filed against a real estate firm accused of duping investors by promising high returns. Searches were earlier conducted on March 28 at the company’s office and residences of its officials, during which Kumar’s name allegedly surfaced.According to agency sources, investigators are examining allegations that a construction group encroached on land parcels across south Kolkata with alleged municipal assistance.Officials are probing whether businessman Amit Gangopadhyay and his associates obtained disputed property records, created forged documents for contested land parcels and sold them at inflated prices. Some of the properties under scrutiny are reportedly linked to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), where Kumar serves as Member-Mayor-in-Council (MMIC).Investigators have reportedly seized phone chats in which photographs and details of disputed land were allegedly shared with Kumar. The ED is also examining whether any money trail or financial transactions connect him to the deals. The agency is further probing the possible involvement of KMC employees and how information related to disputed properties was allegedly accessed. The Trinamool Congress accused the BJP-led Centre of using central agencies to target opposition leaders ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.“BJP is using the central investigating agency against our leaders before the upcoming polls. It is a political vendetta,” TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said.TMC state vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar said the probe was politically motivated and alleged the BJP was misusing federal agencies before elections.Bengal BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said, “Why is ED questioning Kumar and not you or me? TMC should stop making the same baseless allegation whenever there is an ED or CBI operation.”Voting in the Rashbehari constituency will take place in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on April 29, while counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.The searches triggered protests outside Kumar’s residence, where TMC workers raised slogans against the Centre. Anil Ambani (PTI image) NEW DELHI: Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, a former close associate of Anil Ambani and ex vice-chairperson of Reliance Capital arrested on Wednesday, has told a special court here that ED has indulged in “pick and choose” by arresting him instead of going after the “actual beneficiary of Rs 11,500 crore” of proceeds of crime. In his submission before the special court (Rouse Avenue district court), Jhunjhunwala, 70, cited his own email seized and produced by ED before the court to argue these showed all decisions pertaining to corporate loans being probed for alleged laundering were taken at the instructions of Anil Ambani.Appearing for Jhunjhunwala, senior advocate Sidharth Agarwal said the enforcement agency hasn’t caught the “actual culprit” who had indulged in alleged money laundering from Anil Ambani group entities. The special court prima facie accepted ED’s charges and sent Jhunjhunwala and Amit Bapna, another former senior executive of the group, to five days of ED custody for further interrogation.“The material on record indicates that there is imminent possibility of involving some other persons and the entire money trail of about Rs 11,500 crore is required to be traced so that the proceeds of crime are recovered,” special judge Hasan Anzar observed. Both Jhunjhunwala and Bapna pleaded relief on arrest from the court as they said they have been made witnesses in the predicate offence case registered by CBI, based on which ED has initiated its money laundering investigation.“Bare perusal of the email dated May 15, 2017, would reveal that whenever any email was sent, it was copied to higher-ups such as Anil Ambani, Lalit Jalan, etc, and in the email, there is reference to ‘ADA’, and the investigating agency did not investigate on these aspects and each and every instruction was given by ‘ADA’ and the top management, and at the most the accused (Jhunjhunwala) has only passed the instructions from the top management,” Jhunjhunwala’s counsel told the court.Reacting to Jhunjhunwala’s claims, a spokesperson for Anil Ambani referred to paragraph 24 of the special court’s order that points to definition of PMLA section 3 which states that “whoever directly or indirectly attempts to indulge or knowingly assist or is involved in any process or activity connected with proceeds of crime, including its concealment, acquisition or use shall be guilty of the offence of money laundering”.ED, in its submission, said its investigation so far has revealed “a preconceived and well-planned scheme to divert/siphon off of public money from Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) and Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL) through shell/paper companies which were operated and controlled by Reliance Anil Ambani group under the pretext of corporate loans by cheating banks, shareholders, investors and other public institutions”.RHFL had defaulted on more than Rs 7,500 crore, of which lender banks had recovered Rs 2,200 crore after resolution and the balance over Rs 5,300 crore constituted the proceeds of crime.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Pakistan’s Role Discussed’: Shashi Tharoor On Foreign Secretary Briefing In the latest in a series of mysterious drive-by shootings at high-profile terror ideologues and commanders in Pakistan, Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) co-founder Amir Hamza (67) was shot by unidentified gunmen in Lahore on Thursday. This marks the second assassination attempt on Hamza, a USdesignated terrorist, over the past year; he had survived a shooting in May 2025.The attack was reminiscent of a sequence in Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dhurandhar 2’ depicting the killing of Zahoor Mistry in Karachi by motorcycle-borne assailants. Hamza had stepped out of the office of News 24 (Pakistan) following a TV appearance along with Judge Nazir Ahmad Ghazi when two bikers, presumably locals aware of the area’s layout, fired multiple shots at his car near a bus stop before fleeing. Hamza was rushed to hospital with a gunshot injury to his shoulder. In the early 2000s, Hamza had been entrusted with setting up bases in India. He was among the terrorists allegedly involved in the 2005 attack on Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. The attack, which comes amidst top Lashkar commanders announcing, through video messages, revenge for the destruction of their Muridke camp during last year’s Operation Sindoor, follows multiple killings of LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in recent times.LeT’s political wing PMML strongly condemned the attack, saying it reflected a failure of Pakistan govt. A letter seeking security was signed by LeT commander Saifullah Kasuri, Hafiz Talha Saeed, Hafiz Abdul Rauf, among others. They added that Hamza had brought together individuals from different schools of thought on a single platform, Tehreek-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool.Hamza was declared a global terrorist by US in 2012.
