Sasikala Chennai: Two weeks ago, in Madurai’s Tirupparankundram constituency, V K Sasikala, the confidante of former Tamil Nadu chief minister late J Jayalalithaa, signalled a clear mission for the April 23 assembly election: wooing Thevars, a dominant OBC community in southern and central regions of the state, a bloc once seen as the backbone of AIADMK’s support. Through her campaign, Sasikala, who only last month founded a new outfit, All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, has consistently targeted AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami. Sasikala feels there are many in the community unhappy with EPS. She has also tied up with PMK founder S Ramadoss. Both share a sense of betrayal — Sasikala was sidelined in AIADMK after Jayalalithaa’s death, while Ramadoss has lost control of the PMK to his son. Sasikala has fielded 75 candidates, around 50% of them in the Thevar belt. Ramadoss has fielded candidates in 37 constituencies across the Vanniyar belt, including Dharmapuri, where his daughter-in-law Sowmiya Anbumani is in the fray. Vanniyars are a politically influential and numerically significant group in northern Tamil Nadu, comprising roughly 25% of the total population. Like Sasikala, the PMK veteran is also expected to play spoilsport for the AIADMK front, as he is targeting his son Anbumani Ramadoss, president of PMK, which is part of the opposition alliance. With the state witnessing a multi-cornered contest, even a split of around 1,000 votes could tilt results, say political observers. In 2021, the victory margin was less than 3,000 votes in 25 constituencies. Ramadoss has been making emotional statements, accusing Anbumani of betraying him. His candidates continue their campaign targeting Anbumani more than political opponents. “Sasikala’s criticism of Palaniswami and his supporters over her removal from the party post will have an impact. Similarly, you cannot erase Ramadoss and his four decades of politics for the community. Together, they will certainly act as spoilers for the AIADMKled front in the northern, delta and southern districts,” said political critic Rajan Kurai Krishnan. Besides Sasikala and Ramadoss, Puthiya Tamilagam founder K Krishnaswamy has fielded candidates in around 60 constituencies in the western and southern regions. He too targets AIADMK. Meanwhile, Tamiliga Vazhvurimai Katchi functionary T Velmurugan, after exiting the DMK-led front, has fielded candidates in several segments.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosModi Govt’s Women Quota Bill Crashes In Lok Sabha, Fails 2/3 Majority TestSad Day For Women’: Priyanka Chaturvedi Breaks With INDIA Bloc In Lok Sabha RowNo Nari Shakti! Leema Rose Martin (ANI image) Trichy: The narrow rural road to V Thuraiyur, a remote hamlet 15km north of Lalgudi, an agrarian pocket in central Tamil Nadu, is packed with villagers on either side as the campaign vehicle drives through. On the vehicle is AIADMK candidate Leema Rose Martin, wife of lottery baron Santiago Martin and the richest candidate in the fray in Tamil Nadu this time. Her convoy halts when a family requests her to name their 15-day-old baby girl. Clad in a bright silk saree, Leema Rose steps out of the vehicle and obliges. “Leema Rose,” she says, naming the child after herself, leaving the young mother beaming. It’s a Hindu family, but the woman says she will not change the name given by Leema Rose. Such moments, and the enthusiastic reception, are beginning to unsettle DMK, which has held the Lalgudi seat for the past two decades. Lalgudi has been an important seat for DMK — Kanakilyanur, the native village of municipal administration minister K N Nehru, and Anbil, the native place of education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, are part of the constituency. DMK gambled by dropping four-time MLA A Soundara Pandian and fielded T Parivallal, a new face. The move has not gone down well with party supporters. Vijay’s TVK has fielded former AIADMK minister Ku Pa Krishnan. DMK nominated Parivallal hoping the party’s grassroots presence will help him sail through. What it did not expect was AIADMK fielding Leema Rose. There was no opposition in AIADMK when Leema, who had joined the party in Feb this year, was given the ticket. The answer to the acceptance, and an enthusiastic campaign by AIADMK rank and file, lay in Leema’s poll affidavit. She declared assets of Rs 1,049 crore. Her family’s assets, including that of husband Martin, are more than Rs 5,000 crore. Her net worth is way higher than the combined annual budget of Lalgudi municipality and Pullambadi and Poovalur town panchayats located in the constituency. It is not money power alone that Leema is banking on. She hails from the Udayar community and follows Christianity, and Lalgudi has a fair share of both. Even before her candidature was announced, Leema had started campaigning. “AIADMK was also strong in Lalgudi, but DMK was winning because our past candidates did not offer a tough fight. Leema is filling that vacuum,” said a party functionary.About the AuthorDeepak KarthikDeepak is Trichy-based journalist working as Assistant Editor for The Times of India, covering central and Cauvery delta districts in Tamil Nadu. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal New Delhi: Govt has welcomed the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire saying that any step that moves in the direction of peace is welcomed by India. Govt sources also confirmed that India had been invited for a France and UKchaired meeting of around 40 countries to discuss a post-war mission, which excludes the US, to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and that India participated as an observer. “India has been invited to participate in this meeting, and I believe it is going to begin in a few hours. As for the level at which India will participate, we will inform you. We will also share details of the kind of discussions that take place there,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, ahead of the meeting. While there was no official confirmation, it is learnt that foreign secretary Vikram Misri attended the meeting. Misri had represented India at another meeting chaired by the UK earlier this month for safe merchant shipping through the Hormuz strait. India had earlier also welcomed the two-week USIran ceasefire, expressing hope it would lead to lasting peace and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait.
