‘EastEnders’ star Natalie Cassidy recalls daughter’s hospital ordeal after school accident: ‘I felt I was going to have a nervous breakdown’
Natalie Cassidy has opened up about a deeply distressing experience involving her nine-year-old daughter’s emergency hospitalisation. The ‘EastEnders’ star, best known for her role as trumpet-playing drama-magnet Sonia Fowler, revealed she rushed her daughter Joanie to A&E after the child broke her arm in a school accident.Cassidy spoke about the harrowing details of the incident, which occurred mere weeks after Joanie had undergone surgery on the same arm following a previous injury. She shares Joanie with her fiancé Marc Humphreys. She also has an older daughter, 15-year-old Eliza, from a previous relationship.
The traumatic incident at the school
Cassidy explained the circumstances surrounding the accident with emotional honesty. She described how she and her family had been planning to spend quality time together at home. “I’d done a little bit of work in the morning at home. [Marc] went outside, put the paddling pool up, cut all the grass – thinking we’re going to have a few days, like a mini holiday, at home. And then the phone rang,” she recounted on her Life with Nat podcast. The call brought devastating news. “Joanie’s broken her arm again. Same arm – smashed to pieces. General anaesthetic, same operation,” Cassidy said, describing the injury in stark terms. The incident occurred when Joanie slipped in the hall before PE at school.

Natalie Cassidy’s emotional response
The emotional weight of the situation proved overwhelming for the actress. “I felt I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I’m being really honest here. I really fell to pieces. I was not in a good place. Just her little body – and the medication and the trauma of it all,” Cassidy shared candidly about her mental state during the crisis.
Medical investigation into repeated fractures
Following the second fracture, medical professionals began investigating whether an underlying condition might contribute to Joanie’s susceptibility to breaking bones. Cassidy revealed that her daughter has been tested for “some sort of deficiency” that could explain the frequency of the injuries. However, the test results came back reassuringly normal. “She’s had full blood tests, and everything is in range. It’s absolutely perfect. The consultant actually said, ‘I do think it’s just really bad luck’,” Cassidy reported, indicating that the medical team could find no physiological explanation for the repeated fractures.

Natalie Cassidy’s advocacy on social media safety
Beyond dealing with her family’s health crisis, Cassidy has been vocal about child safety concerns. In February, she voiced her support for a proposed ban on social media usage for under-16s, backing a campaign called Big Tech’s Little Victims. The campaign revealed alarming findings through an algorithm experiment designed to uncover what content platforms show young users. Four fake profiles set up at the minimum user age of 13 were served hundreds of pieces of concerning content within just one week. “I cannot tell you how shocking it is. They are looking at sexualised content, racism, violence, misogyny, extreme dieting going towards anorexia, self-harming and even suicidal ideation. It’s incredible,” Cassidy said, expressing her horror at the material available to children.
Natalie Cassidy’s career and past challenges
Cassidy joined EastEnders at the age of 10 and announced her departure from the soap in 2025, subsequently venturing into podcasting with her show Life with Nat. The actress has previously addressed controversial decisions from her past, including appearing in a series of weight loss videos during the 2000s titled ‘Then & Now’ and ‘The Perfect Ten.’In reflecting on those videos, Cassidy admitted that it was “not a good move” to participate in the series, during which she lost four stone.
