Agartala: Tripura Police, in a joint operation with Assam Police STF and central agencies, arrest suspected JMB offshoot member Jagir Miah from a border village, in Agartala. (PTI Photo) GUWAHATI: Assam police busted a module of Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK) with the arrest of 11 alleged operatives of the Bangladesh-based Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) offshoot formed in 2018. Investigators said IMK expanded its base in the state after Bangladesh’s Aug 2024 regime change that led to the exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Of the 11 people held by Assam police’s Special Task Force (STF), 10 were picked up from Assam and one from Tripura in operations since late Monday night. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the threat from such modules. “Fundamentalists are definitely active in Assam. The issue will remain for long as Bangladesh is Assam’s neighbouring country,” Sarma said. STF chief and Guwahati police commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said IMK used encrypted social media groups to radicalise and recruit youths in Assam and nearby states, spread propaganda, raise funds through hawala and UPI channels, and facilitate cross-border travel for training. “Probe revealed that following the regime change in Bangladesh in Aug 2024, top leaders of JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) issued directions to IMK leadership to activate and expand its Indian modules. Bangladeshi nationals Umar and Khalid were assigned to coordinate Assam-based activities. The head of the Assam cell is one Nasim Uddin alias Tamim of Barpeta Road in Barpeta district in Assam,” Mahanta said. Nasim Uddin was among those 11 arrested. Multiple charges under BNS, 2023 and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967 were slapped on the suspects. Mahanta said IMK, banned in India, was formed by Jewel Mahmud alias Imam Mahmud Habibullah alias Sohail, described as a former JMB member who claims to be the amir (leader) of IMK and propagates the ideology of “Ghazwatul Hind (Battle against India)”. Mahanta said IMK propagated an ideology aligned with proscribed transnational jihadi organisations and operated through secure social media platforms. “One such social media group is ‘Purva Akash’, which functions as a principal communication and recruitment platform. People from Assam, Bengal and Tripura were being radicalised, recruited, financially mobilised. IMK disseminates extremist propaganda advocating violent jihad and the armed conquest of India.” Investigators found that some Assam-based IMK operatives had travelled to Bangladesh earlier this year on valid passports and visas for training and coordination, Mahanta further said.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosJaishankar To Attend Khaleda Zia’s Funeral In Dhaka Amid Strained India-Bangladesh TiesDRDO Successfully Tests Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket In Odisha, To Be Inducted In Indian Army’UPSC Is Complete Waste Of Time’: PM’s Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal On AI Era EducationHindu Guard Killed By Colleague In Bangladesh, Third Death In Days Raises Minority Safety Fears’Deeply Concerned’: PM Modi Reacts To Reports Of Attack On Putin’s House, Ukraine Responds“No Racial Angle”: SSP Rules Out Alleged Slurs in Angel Chakma KillingCongress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Flags Attacks on Migrant Workers to PM Modi’Will Rid Bengal Of Infiltrators’: Amit Shah Slams Mamata Banerjee’s 14-Year Rule, Sounds Poll BugleFrom Defence To Civil Skies: HAL’s Dhruv-NG Helicopter Takes Flight In India’s Aviation PushJapanese Tourist Harassed in Varanasi on Christmas, Netizens Slam ‘Mob Culture’123Photostories5 new unexpected couples and major celebrity weddings of 2025Tracing the arc from ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ through ‘Taish’ to ‘Dange’, Harshvardhan Rane’s growing stature5 iconic New Year markets in the USA that keep the holiday magic alive for long!3 reasons to consume Papaya smoothie and the right way to make it as per AIIMS doctor10 types of Pasta dishes from around the world6 best indoor exercises for people who are planning to build muscle strength‘Dhurandhar’: Saumya Tandon aka Ulfat Hasin Baloch says, ‘Aditya Dhar was always on my wish list’ – Exclusive7 weekly routines common among people who live to 100Healthiest fruits of 2025: These 5 fruits are richest in key nutrientsWhich Hindu Idol You Should Bring Home On January 1, 2026123Hot PicksIndigo flight DisruptionsPAN-Aadhaar link statusKhaleda ZiaGold rate todayIncome Tax RefundBahrain Golden Visa 2025Bank Holidays DecemberTop TrendingErika KirkTravis KelceJoel EmbiidAlex Rodriguez and Jaclyn Cordeiro Net WorthStefon DiggsMagic Johnson vs Shaquille O Neal Net WorthPhiladelphia 76ers vs Memphis GrizzliesPopeyes Streaming BundlesJake Paul and Jutta Leerdam Net WorthSidney Crosby Lifestyle

NEW DELHI: The Bihar results have delivered a major blow to CPI(Marxist-Leninist) Liberation with its double-digit tally of 12 seats in 2020 plummeting to mere 2 seats – Karakat and Paliganj – out of the 20 it contested this time. The party that traces its beginnings to mass movements and grassroots mobilisation among the landless and marginalised failed to retain even its strongholds. While describing the election outcome as “unnatural and not a reflection of ground reality” and claiming that the result was facilitated by deletion and addition of voters and by dispensing of the dole to women, party general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya did acknowledge the need for parties in the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ to “introspect” on this severe setback.Six Ways Nitish Kumar Proved ‘Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai’ As NDA Registers Big Win in Bihar Assembly PollsThe CPI(ML) certainly needed to take a closer look at its strategy. Not only has it lost in its strongholds, the party which played a crucial role in keeping together the rather fragile alliance is set to lose its place as one of the grouping’s key anchors because of the abysmal performance. In what was seen as a strong comeback in 2020, the Left party had secured 12 of the 19 seats it contested as part of the Mahagathbandhan, emerging as a critical force with grassroots influence in belts like Bhojpur, Siwan and Arrah. Its influence in the alliance was evident ahead of the current polls. Through the power-play over ticket distribution and declaration of Tejaswi Yadav as the CM face of the alliance, one saw Bhattacharya playing a key role in ironing out differences between RJD and Congress. It is also felt that CPI(ML)’s going along with its Mahagathbandhan partner RJD’s decision to field Osama Shahab from Raghunathpur would not have gone unnoticed among the core support base of the Left party, impacting its image as a crusader for the marginalised. Osama’s late father and former Siwan MP Mohammad Shahabuddin was accused of ordering the 1997 killing of student activist Chandrashekhar, who was associated with the Left party and seen as his potential political rival. While CPI(ML) candidates won merely two seats – Paliganj and Karakat, the party lost in Agiaon (SC) by a narrow margin of 95 votes. In three other seats – Balrampur, Dumraon and Zeeradei, the margin of defeat was less than 3,000. The party contested 20 seats this time and its vote share sands at close to 3%. The other Left parties too have performed poorly, with CPI(M) winning just 1 of 4 seats as against 2 last time and CPI, which had won 2 seats last time, failing to open its account though it contested 6.Reflecting on the verdict the CPI(ML) general secretary said that the outcome “has the scars of SIR all over it. The role of the unprecedented money transfer operation amounting to Rs 30,000 crore among a beneficiary population of 3 crore defying all notions of election ethics and model code of conduct must also be taken into account.””A virtual repeat of the 2010 outcome after fifteen years when the credibility of the Nitish Kumar government has touched an all-time low and the Modi government too suffered a major loss of support just a year ago defies credulity. We will undertake a thorough analysis of the outcome and draw necessary lessons,” Bhattacharya added. CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby described the result as a setback for the ‘mahagathbandhan’ and accused the NDA of utilising the state machinery and resorting to all sorts of manipulation including the Rs 10,000 cash transfer to bank accounts of women beneficiaries ahead of polls. The party in a statement said that the “NDA benefited from the polarising communal and cateist rhetoric of its leaders, including the Prime Minister and home minister”. “All this drowned out the issues like unemployment and even vote chori raised by the mahagathbandhan,” Baby said. However, he called for introspection over how key players could have put up a more united fight to counter the NDA in the elections.A leader said that while the Mahagathbandhan was able to raise the ‘vote chori’ issue with the people effectively, somewhere the alliance on ground was unable to mobilise the people to come out and vote to seek transparency in the polling system. The Left party leaders also cite that the way RJD and Congress delayed resolving differences over ticket distribution sent out a negative message about the mahagathbandhan lacking unity. This was further aggravated by what was referred to as “friendly fights” on nearly 10 seats where no consensus could be reached.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos“All options open…” Piyush Goyal on ongoing India-Canada talks after two rounds of discussionsUN Must Reform Now: India Demands Expansion of Both Permanent And Non-Permanent UNSC Member StatesDeadly Explosion At Nowgam Station Exposes Scale Of 360 Kg Urban Terror Cache Seized From Faridabad‘Bihar’s New MY Formula Is Mahila & Youth’: PM Modi Targets RJD-Congress After NDA’s Landslide Win‘Too Big To Fail’: South African Envoy On Trump’s G20 Boycott, Says PM Modi’s Presence Crucial‘Misa-Priyanka Ko Dickey Mein…’: Yashwant Deshmukh’s Message to RJD–Cong After NDA’s Bihar WinAir India Bombing Returns To Spotlight, CSIS Warns Canada Of New Extremist Networks And Rising RisksSix Ways Nitish Kumar Proved ‘Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai’ As NDA Registers Big Win in Bihar Assembly Polls‘Full Stop to Many Questions’ Chirag Paswan Hails PM Modi, Nitish as NDA Soars Past 200 SeatsKerala Teenager Dies in Dubai After Rooftop Fall While Trying To Take Photos of Low-Flying Planes123PhotostoriesPancreatic cancer: How lifestyle choices can lower your riskZero sugar, big damage?
