Maharashtra deputy CM Sunetra Pawar with son Jay Pawar, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and others during a ceremony to pay tribute to former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar (PTI) PUNE: As suspense over the merger of the two NCPs continues, family patriarch Sharad Pawar on Wednesday met late nephew Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar at her residence in Baramati for the first time after she took oath as Maharashtra’s deputy CM.Amid reports of a division in the family, Pawar, Sunetra, her sons Parth and Jay, and other relatives held a closed-door meeting in their hometown late Wednesday, reigniting the reunification buzz. Pawar Senior and his wife Pratibha offered condolences to Ajit Pawar’s family, and together, they all met locals who visited them. The NCP (SP) chief had, a few days ago, made his disappointment clear as he said Sunetra did not consult him about taking up the deputy CM’s post last week. However, he told reporters in Baramati on Wednesday morning he supported her decision. “I am happy that she was given the opportunity.” Despite ill health, he spent the entire day in a series of meetings in Baramati. Among these were a closed-door meeting with Sunetra’s sons and Ajit Pawar’s sister, Vijaya Patil, on Vidya Pratishthan campus. Later in the day, key members of the Pawar family met at Sunetra’s residence.Pawar also chaired a meeting of the trustees of Vidya Pratishthan, of which he is president. Parth and Jay were also called for the meeting, where both were apprised of the functioning of Vidya Pratishthan in which Ajit Pawar was a trustee. There was also a primary discussion on Ajit Pawar’s proposed memorial, sources told TOI .Pawar returned to Baramati from Mumbai on Tuesday after cancelling his Delhi visit to participate in the budget session of Parliament. “Be it Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha or assembly, I was a member of these houses for 58 years. Image courtesy: ANI NEW DELHI: Tensions flared at the counting centre in Bhowanipore, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s assembly constituency, a day before vote counting, after her TMC alleged that two vehicles displaying BJP flags were allowed inside the secured premises where EVMs are stored.Banerjee’s main opponent in Bhowanipore is BJP leader and West Bengal’s leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari, her former aide.TMC workers claimed that CAPF personnel were strictly regulating entry into the counting centre, yet a suspicious vehicle was permitted inside despite no prior sightings in recent days. They further alleged that after they raised objections, security forces pushed them back nearly 100 metres from the site. The party also alleged that although officials initially said the vehicle would be removed, it remained parked for some time before leaving. However, an Election Commission official countered the claim, stating that the vehicle had merely passed along Harish Mukherjee Road and was allowed to proceed after checks by security personnel and police found nothing objectionable. The incident follows a series of similar allegations made by the TMC in recent days. On Thursday, Banerjee staged a four-hour sit-in outside the Sakhawat Memorial Girls School counting centre, protesting “unauthorised access” to strongrooms. Trinamool leaders and candidatea Sashi Panja and Kunal Ghosh also held demonstrations outside another counting facility, accusing authorities of irregularities amid the absence of TMC agents.Similar protests were reported on Saturday at counting centres in Asansol College in Paschim Bardhaman and Barasat Government College in North 24 Parganas, where the ruling party’s workers claimed CCTV cameras were briefly switched off. The Election Commission rejected all such allegations, maintaining that surveillance systems remained fully operational.Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Sajal Ghosh dismissed the claims, accusing the TMC of making baseless allegations out of fear of defeat and questioning whether the party was anticipating an electoral loss.West Bengal’s elections were conducted in two phases, with voting held on April 23 in 152 constituencies and on April 29 in the remaining 142 seats. In response to the recent flight disruptions, IndiGo’s chairman, Vikram Singh Mehta, extended his sincerest apologies, emphasizing that these disruptions were not intentional. He confirmed that the airline will engage external experts to delve into the root causes and implement measures for improvement. Mehta reassured that compliance with new pilot rest regulations was strictly upheld, prioritizing passenger safety. Vikram Singh Mehta (right) / File photo NEW DELHI: Under govt scrutiny for unprecedented flight disruptions, IndiGo chairman Vikram Singh Mehta on Wednesday denied the same were deliberate. Apologising multiple times in his about 8-minute video message, he said “external technical experts (will) work with the management; help determine the root causes, and ensure corrective action so that this level of disruption never occurs again.”The DGCA is probing IndiGo’s fiasco that unfolded this month. It is examining whether the airline caused the same to avoid abiding by the new pilot rest rules. Mehta denied the same.“Over the past week there has been a ot of criticism. Some fair. Some not. The fair criticism is that the airline let down you down. We owe answers to customers, govt, shareholders, employees. We will examine every aspect of what went wrong. We will learn from it,” he said.“However, there are some allegations that are untrue. That IndiGo engineered the crisis. That we tried to influence govt rules. That we compromised safety. That the board was not involved. These claims are incorrect. IndiGo has followed the pilot fatigue rules as they came into effect. We operated under the new rules throughout, both in July and in Nov. We did not attempt to bypass them. Nor did we anything that impacted our unblemished track record of safety. The disruptions of last week did not happen because of any deliberate actions,” said the former chairman of Shell Group of companies in India.“On Dec 3, an unexpected chain of events led to large scale flight cancellations. This continued into Dec 4 & 5. Thousands of our passengers were left stranded. We did not meet your expectations during those days. This happened because of a combination of of internal and external events including minor technical glitches; schedule changes linked to start of winter; adverse weather conditions; increased congestion in the aviation system and implementation of and operation under the updated crew rostering rules. This is not an excuse, this is simply the truth. This combination of events pushed our systems beyond their limits,” Mehta said.He said the board was constantly involved in tackling the issue and that things are back on track much before expected. The airline operated 1,900 flights to 138 destinations with normal punctuality, he said.Although he admitted: “Last week’s events are a blemish on this company’s pristine record. NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK has put the wheels in motion to form the government in Tamil Nadu, as it emerged as the single-largest party but fell short of crossing the majority mark by 10 seats.Reportedly, TVK is seeking backing from smaller parties such as Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPM, and VCK, which together could help the party cross the majority mark.TVK chief Vijay also sought time from Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to meet him as part of the process for government formation. Here is what’s happening in Tamil Nadu:Congress jumps ship?News agency PTI, citing sources, reported that the Tamil Nadu Congress has decided to support the formation of a secular government in the state. The decision to support TVK was taken at an urgent meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Tamil Nadu Congress late on Tuesday night.AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu affairs, Girish Chodankar, had called the meeting of the committee to decide on extending support to TVK.According to sources, the meeting was convened on Zoom, and senior members expressed their views in favour of supporting the actor-turned-politician.”The PAC of the Tamil Nadu Congress unanimously decided to support TVK leader Thiru Vijay to form a secular government in Tamil Nadu,” sources said.Earlier during the day, the Congress claimed that Vijay had sought its support for government formation in the state and informed that its leadership has directed the state unit to take a final decision on the matter, keeping in view the state’s sentiments. The party, which fought the assembly election in alliance with the DMK, asserted that the mandate in the southern state is for a secular government and that it is determined “not to have the BJP and its proxies run the government of Tamil Nadu in any manner.”DMK takes ‘backstabber’ jibe at CongressTensions rose within the Secular Progressive Alliance, as the DMK called Congress a “backstabber” amid rising speculation of the grand old party supporting TVK in Tamil Nadu.DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Congress, calling the decision “myopic” and accusing it of having “backstabbed” INDIA bloc partners.”I think this is a very short-sighted, myopic stand taken by the Congress, which they will regret. The 2029 big elections are coming, where we were very confident that we would be able to remove the BJP. But now, because of this decision by the Congress, it has made them a very unstable partner. The perception that is out in the entire country is that Congress cannot be trusted,” he said.Cracks within AIADMKMeanwhile, dissent seems to be brewing within the AIADMK, as a faction is pressing the leadership to support Vijay in forming the government.Reports suggest that there is a faction within the AIADMK that is inclined to support Vijay and his party by offering support. There have also been reports that these MLAs are not too happy with Edappadi Palaniswami’s leadership.TVK, which stands at 108 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly and is just 10 short of the 118 halfway majority mark, is more likely to ally with smaller parties like Congress and the Left front.TVK MLAs lodged at luxury resortMeanwhile, 108 victorious TVK MLAs, including those from distant regions, have been housed in a private luxury resort in Mamallapuram on Wednesday. The arrangement comes after a meeting with party leader Vijay. To ensure security, a heavy police presence has been deployed around the resort, with increased surveillance in place.Over 50 MLAs are currently staying at the Four Points Star hotel in Poonjeri, Mamallapuram, and more TVK MLAs are expected to arrive through the day. The party continues to strategise post-election developments.Regardless of how government formation plays out, the coming days will be decisive. Whether it is a TVK-Congress understanding, a broader coalition of smaller parties, or some combination of both, the era of TVK is here, but the shape of its government remains to be seen.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
