KULGAM: The J&K administration is planning to establish rehabilitation centres across the state to help recovering addicts reintegrate into society, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said Monday as he led the “Drug-Free J&K Padyatra” in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.Talking to the TOI on the sidelines of the event, Sinha said the campaign has significantly disrupted drug trafficking networks across J&K. “Our campaign has broken the supply chain and those involved in drug trafficking are facing tough times,” he said.Sinha said hundreds of people affected by drug addiction are contacting Tele-MANAS Srinagar, the national mental health helpline, every day to seek treatment and counselling. He said the campaign has also encouraged public participation, with residents directly informing police about drug-related activities in their localities.The LG said de-addiction centres are functioning in all districts of Jammu and Kashmir and counsellors have been deployed to provide psychological support and long-term treatment to recovering addicts.Unlike many other parts of the country, where rehabilitation facilities are largely run by the private sector, the proposed centres in Jammu and Kashmir will be established in the government sector and made available in every district, he said.Addressing the gathering at the event, Sinha said that over the past 51 days, they have carried out extensive, coordinated operations against narco-terrorists and drug traffickers.Sinha had on April 11 launched a 100-day intensive drive under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan to make Jammu and Kashmir “drug-free”.The campaign has involved large-scale awareness programmes by the civil administration and police, destruction of poppy cultivation, random urine testing of drivers and intensified crackdowns on drug networks.Since the campaign was started 923 FIRs have been registered against alleged drug traffickers in the last 51 days. More than 1,000 alleged drug smugglers have been arrested, over 55 alleged drug traffickers have been detained.“This campaign is striking directly at the financial backbone of terrorism. Every rupee spent on drugs fuels extremist violence, and narco-terrorists survive on that blood money. By halting the drug trade, we cut off the lifeline that sustains terror networks,” he said.According to a survey, “Prevalence and Pattern of Substance Use Disorders in Ten Districts of Kashmir” carried out by the IMHANS Kashmir in 2023, the Valley has estimated 67,468 substance-dependent individuals. General Upendra Dwivedi (ANI photo) NEW DELHI: Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday reflected on Operation Sindoor, describing the counterterror military action as “ongoing” and warning Pakistan, that any “future misadventure will be resolutely responded.”General Dwivedi issued a direct warning to Islamabad, saying, “At least 6 terror camps still active across the LoC & 2 across the International Border after Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. Will act, if any (nefarious) attempts are carried out.”Addressing the annual Army Day press conference, General Dwivedi said a “clear decision to respond decisively was taken at the highest level.” He added, “Operation Sindoor was conceptualised and executed with precision. Through 22 minutes of initiation on 7th May and an orchestration that lasted 88 hours up to 10th May, the operation reset strategic assumptions by striking deep, dismantling terror infrastructure, and puncturing the longstanding nuclear rhetoric. The Army successfully destroyed seven out of the nine targets and thereafter played a pivotal role in ensuring a calibrated response to Pak actions.”Upendra Dwivedi highlighted the heavy losses suffered by the Pakistan Army, saying that about 100 of their personnel were killed in firing along the LoC and IB during heightened military tensions.The Army chief stressed that the counterterror operation, launched in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, remains “ongoing,” and reiterated the warning of a “resolute response” to any future misadventures. So, based on the lessons drawn during Operation Sindoor and in line with the Indian Army’s belief that change must come at the velocity of relevance. We prefix the verb acceleration to all our nouns, that is initiatives.”Commenting on the broader security situation in the North, the Army chief said, “The situation along the Northern Front remains stable, but needs constant vigil. Apex-level interactions, renewed contact, and confidence-building measures are contributing to the gradual normalisation of the situation that has also enabled grazing, hydrotherapy camps, and other activities along the Northern Borders.” On India-China border, he said “With our continued strategic orientation on this front, our deployment along the Line of Actual Control remains balanced and robust. Concurrently, capability development and infrastructure enhancement are progressing through a whole-of-government approach.”The Army chief also responded to and rejected China’s repeated claims on Jammu and Kashmir’s Shaksgam Valley, reiterating India’s position: “India considers the 1963 agreement between Pakistan and China on Shaksgam Valley.”In the intervening nights of May 6 and May 7, Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, destroying nine major terror hideouts in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and mainland Pakistan. The strikes targeted headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammad in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke.Following the operation, India clarified that the strikes were aimed solely at terror infrastructure and not Pakistan’s state machinery. CHANDIGARH: Haryana Congress president Rao Narendra Singh on Thursday met the family members of a woman, who was allegedly gangraped by two men in a moving van through the night and thrown out of the speeding vehicle in Faridabad in the wee hours of Wednesday.Singh visited a private hospital in Faridabad, where the woman is undergoing treatment, and assured the family of all possible support.Calling it an inhumane and heinous crime, Rao said, “I saw the victim, who was unconscious and unable to speak, with significant injuries to her face. Law and order have collapsed in Haryana, exposing the BJP government that boasts of women’s safety.” Demanding strict punishment for the two accused, who have since been arrested and sent to judicial custody, Singh said such cases must be tried in a fast-track court.”The BJP government’s claims on women’s safety have proved hollow.
