NEW DELHI: Congress slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “hiding behind Speaker” after Om Birla said that he had requested the PM to not to come to the House when he was scheduled to reply to the President’s address, citing security reasons by the women MPs. The Lok Sabha eventually passed the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address without the customary reply by the prime minister.”The PM is hiding behind the Speaker. Yesterday, he did not have the guts to come to the House because three women were standing before the bench. What nonsense is this? There is no discussion because the govt doesn’t want discussion to happen,” Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi said on Thursday, shortly after the Lok Sabha session was adjourned again within seconds. Moreover, Congress leader Pawan Khera dismissed the “security concerns” claims as raised by the Speaker, saying that the women MPs were there to protest.PM Modi was scheduled to speak in Lok Sabha on Wednesday at 5pm. However, when the proceedings began, the women opposition leaders stood around the PM’s chair displaying posters as a mark of protest. The prime minister was not present in the House and the speech was eventually cancelled.Om Birla alleged that the MPs “could have created an inappropriate incident near the Prime Minister’s chair”, thus, he advised the PM not to visit the House.”Are the Modi government and their subservient journalists trying to say that women are inherently violent? Is protest by a woman considered terrorism? Were the Modi government and their compliant journalists uncomfortable with a Dalit woman MP standing up? Do they consider them untouchable?” Khera said reacting to the claims.”The Modi government and its servile journalists should apologize to the women of the country, especially Dalit women,” he added. The opposition has been protesting against the Centre over the proposed India–US trade deal, which it claims will hurt farmers and agriculture, the suspension of eight opposition MPs during the Budget Session, the alleged sidelining of Parliament in communicating key policy decisions, and the controversy surrounding former Army chief MM Naravane’s memoir, which Rahul Gandhi cited while accusing the government of compromising national interests, escalating tensions inside and outside the House.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. CJI (File photo) NEW DELHI: CJI Surya Kant on Friday recused from hearing a bunch of PILs challenging a 2023 law that altered the Supreme Court-framed composition of the panel for selection of chief election commissioner (CEC) and ECs by excluding the CJI from it.CJI Kant cited “conflict of interest” to recuse from hearing the petitions which challenge the validity of the CEC and Other ECs (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. He said he would post the petitions before a bench that does not include any future CJIs. The bench led by CJI Kant had Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, both of whom will go on to become CJIs in future. The CJI’s stand that no future CJI would be part of the bench to hear the petitions would mean exclusion of the following judges – Justices Vikram Nath, B V Nagarathna, P S Narasimha, J B Pardiwala and K V Vishwanathan.Israel Iran WarUS-Israel-Iran War News Live Updates: Israel pounds Tehran as Iranians mark Nowruz; UAE, Kuwait defences respond to missile barrage’World’s first hit’: Iran claims strike on US F-35 lightning 2 – why it’s a big dealIran hits Ras Laffan facility: Qatar’s 17% LNG capacity gone, bn loss; which countries will be impacted? On Feb 3 last year, the Supreme Court had rejected pleas for stay on the selection of CEC Rajiv Kumar, who was succeeded by Gyanesh Kumar on Feb 19, 2025.A five-judge SC bench on March 2, 2023, in the Anoop Baranwal case, had noticed a “legislative vacuum” on the process for selection of CEC and ECs, and directed that a panel comprising PM, leader the opposition and CJI would advise the President on appointments to the EC until Parliament enacted a law for the purpose. The law, which came into force from Dec 29, 2023, replaced the CJI with a Union cabinet minister chosen by the PM.Till enactment of the 2023 law and through the decades since 1950 when the EC was estbalished, appointment of CEC and ECs in the commission – as per Article 324(2) of the Constitution – had remained the sole prerogative of the executive. As per the Constitution, the process of appointment of CEC and ECs was to be subject to “provisions of any law made in that behalf by Parliament”.From 1950 till 2023, no law was enacted for the appointment of CEC and ECs, and the resultant “vacuum” led SC to rule that the appointments were made by a panel comprising PM, LoP and CJI until the enactment of a law.Petitioners have argued that the executive has a firm grip over the entire selection process which creates doubt in the people’s mind about the fairness of the EC, which in turn puts a question mark on the fairness of elections.KVK Sundaram remains the longest-serving CEC, (Dec 20, 1958 till Sept 30, 1967), followed by first CEC Sukumar Sen (March 21, 1950 till Dec 19, 1958). From 1950 to 2004, in a span of 54 years, there were 12 CECs, but in next 22 years, there have been 13 CECs. The EC was a single-member body comprising the CEC till Oct 1989. NEW DELHI: In a landmark advance for thalassemia care, US FDA has approved Mitapivat, the first oral treatment for anaemia in adults with thalassemia, covering both transfusion-dependent and non-transfusion-dependent alpha and beta disease. Clinicians and patient groups in India have welcomed the decision as a potential game changer for a lifelong genetic blood disorder that currently depends largely on repeated blood transfusions and iron chelation. The drug, however, is not yet available in India, as it has not received approval from DCGI. Calling the approval a historic shift, Dr Rahul Bhargava, director and head of hematology and hemato-oncology at Fortis Institute of Blood Disorders, said Mitapivat targets the disease at its cellular core by correcting red-cell metabolism rather than only managing consequences. From a transfusion-medicine perspective, Dr Rishiraj Sinha from AIIMS said adult patients have long borne the clinical and quality-of-life burden of lifelong transfusions and chelation. “The approval of the first oral therapy for both transfusion-dependent and non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia is a meaningful shift in disease management. Beyond improving haemoglobin, an oral option could reduce fatigue, treatment burden and long-term complications, moving care toward a more patient-centred and livable model-though access, affordability and safety monitoring will be critical,” he said.Experts said the next challenge is regulatory clearance and affordability in India.
