NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK has put the wheels in motion to form the government in Tamil Nadu, as it emerged as the single-largest party but fell short of crossing the majority mark by 10 seats.Reportedly, TVK is seeking backing from smaller parties such as Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPM, and VCK, which together could help the party cross the majority mark.TVK chief Vijay also sought time from Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to meet him as part of the process for government formation. Here is what’s happening in Tamil Nadu:Congress jumps ship?News agency PTI, citing sources, reported that the Tamil Nadu Congress has decided to support the formation of a secular government in the state. The decision to support TVK was taken at an urgent meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Tamil Nadu Congress late on Tuesday night.AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu affairs, Girish Chodankar, had called the meeting of the committee to decide on extending support to TVK.According to sources, the meeting was convened on Zoom, and senior members expressed their views in favour of supporting the actor-turned-politician.”The PAC of the Tamil Nadu Congress unanimously decided to support TVK leader Thiru Vijay to form a secular government in Tamil Nadu,” sources said.Earlier during the day, the Congress claimed that Vijay had sought its support for government formation in the state and informed that its leadership has directed the state unit to take a final decision on the matter, keeping in view the state’s sentiments. The party, which fought the assembly election in alliance with the DMK, asserted that the mandate in the southern state is for a secular government and that it is determined “not to have the BJP and its proxies run the government of Tamil Nadu in any manner.”DMK takes ‘backstabber’ jibe at CongressTensions rose within the Secular Progressive Alliance, as the DMK called Congress a “backstabber” amid rising speculation of the grand old party supporting TVK in Tamil Nadu.DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Congress, calling the decision “myopic” and accusing it of having “backstabbed” INDIA bloc partners.”I think this is a very short-sighted, myopic stand taken by the Congress, which they will regret. The 2029 big elections are coming, where we were very confident that we would be able to remove the BJP. But now, because of this decision by the Congress, it has made them a very unstable partner. The perception that is out in the entire country is that Congress cannot be trusted,” he said.Cracks within AIADMKMeanwhile, dissent seems to be brewing within the AIADMK, as a faction is pressing the leadership to support Vijay in forming the government.Reports suggest that there is a faction within the AIADMK that is inclined to support Vijay and his party by offering support. There have also been reports that these MLAs are not too happy with Edappadi Palaniswami’s leadership.TVK, which stands at 108 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly and is just 10 short of the 118 halfway majority mark, is more likely to ally with smaller parties like Congress and the Left front.TVK MLAs lodged at luxury resortMeanwhile, 108 victorious TVK MLAs, including those from distant regions, have been housed in a private luxury resort in Mamallapuram on Wednesday. The arrangement comes after a meeting with party leader Vijay. To ensure security, a heavy police presence has been deployed around the resort, with increased surveillance in place.Over 50 MLAs are currently staying at the Four Points Star hotel in Poonjeri, Mamallapuram, and more TVK MLAs are expected to arrive through the day. The party continues to strategise post-election developments.Regardless of how government formation plays out, the coming days will be decisive. Whether it is a TVK-Congress understanding, a broader coalition of smaller parties, or some combination of both, the era of TVK is here, but the shape of its government remains to be seen.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Rahul Gandhi, Vijay, Stalin NEW DELHI: Cracks within the INDIA bloc came into sharp focus after the Tamil Nadu verdict, as the MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam lashed out at its ally, Congress, for backing actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The DMK termed the Congress’ move “backstabbing,” signalling serious strain within the opposition alliance.DMK joint secretary and spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai called its INDIA bloc ally Congress’ step “foolhardy decision” and driven by the need to “satisfy a few egos.”Defending the DMK’s past support to Congress, he invoked party supremo Stalin’s backing of Rahul Gandhi. He said, “In 2016, the Congress got a good number of seats, though it was not proportionate to the seats that were allocated to them. The BJP-RSS was mocking Rahul Gandhi, calling him names. At that time, our leader, MK Stalin, made Rahul Gandhi the prime ministerial candidate, which was a bold move. From then onwards, Rahul Gandhi’s graph rose in 2024… It is all the hard work of the DMK on the ground, the resources of the DMK party on the ground, and that is why they were able to pull off these five seats. I call this a foolhardy decision. The TVK, of course, needs 11 seats to cross the majority mark. The AIADMK, with 47 seats, is willing to offer unconditional support. If you are Vijay, to whom will you listen? Someone with five seats or someone with 43 seats? So the Congress, I think, had made a very bad decision. Just to satisfy a few egos, and they will regret it immediately…”Doubling down, Annadurai added, “We wish good luck to Vijay when he takes oath on 7th May. Congress has offered its support to the TVK, and that is why we called it backstabbing… The Congress has decided to flip sides and support the TVK, and the reasons cited by them are not convincing. They say they want to keep the BJP and the RSS at bay, and that is why this call should be made… This is a full-hearted decision by the Congress, which is likely to send ripples across the country in the sense that there are other alliance partners. If Congress is going to be so untrustworthy, just within a day of the results, they are openly going against the mandate. What impact will it create in the minds of Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray and all the others? We have never failed the Congress…”Earlier to this, DMK spokesperson had posted a cryptic message in an indirect attack to now his an estranged ally Congress — writing “The backstabbers.”Meanwhile, Congress MP Manickam Tagore strung a relatively friendly tone in DMK-Congress struggle, projecting the BJP as main rival in justifying ties with Vijay. He said, “The verdict has gone against the DMK government. Half the ministers in the Cabinet have lost their seats. We faced collateral damage for no fault of ours. Now, BJP is eyeing Tamil Nadu. The question before us is clear: Should we stand with those rejected by the people’s verdict, or should we unite with the force that fought against BJP and fight to stop BJP from ruling Tamil Nadu?”The political churn follows a cinematic electoral debut by mega-movie star Vijay, whose TVK disrupted the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. Emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, TVK fell short of a majority but fundamentally altered Tamil Nadu’s political arithmetic. With the DMK pushed out of power and facing a weakened position, Congress’ willingness to back TVK, despite holding just six seats, has intensified speculation of a realignment.
