(AP Photo/PTI) India and ASEAN giant Indonesia signed over a dozen agreements in key areas like maritime security, critical minerals and defence, including major contracts for supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system and Astra air-to-air missiles to Indonesia, while reaffirming their commitment to jointly developing the strategic Sabang port overlooking the entrance to the Strait of Malacca. The agreements followed PM Narendra Modi’s meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto which, Modi said, marked a golden chapter in ties that would have a positive influence on the 21st-century world and humanity at large. Cognisant of the southeast Asian country’s close ties with Palestine, Modi said in his media remarks India “steadfastly” supports a 2-state solution. Addressing the Indonesian Parliament later, he also said India stands for growth, not expansionism. Prabowo backed joint development of the Sabang Port in Aceh – located barely 100 nautical miles from India’s southernmost Indira Point in the Great Nicobar Island – as a strategic link between the 2 countries, which India sees a key element of shared interests in the Indo-Pacific that the 2 sides agreed to work on in 2018. Both leaders recognised in a joint statement that a project like Sabang — spanning cruise and marine-tourism facilities, maritime industries (ship-repair and shipbuilding), and shore-based services supporting offshore energy activities in the Andaman Sea — would foster links between Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) and Sumatra that could contribute to generating investment, employment, transfer of technology and shared regional prosperity. Modi said that growing trust between the 2 countries had led to stronger defence, security, and maritime cooperation and, as close maritime neighbors, India and Indonesia would boost cooperation in the blue economy, port development, and maritime trade. He also announced that the Indian and Indonesian Coast Guard Coast will work closely to ensure maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean. Modi and Prabowo welcomed the elevation of defence cooperation, including through cooperation on BrahMos Missile System, which is co-owned by India and Russia, and India’s indigenous Astra air-to-air missile cooperation agreement. BrahMos and Astra agreements, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, can help India expand its defence exports and at the same time elevate its profile as a possible counterweight to China’s dominance in the region. The defence agreements come on the back of concerted attempts by both sides for collaboration in defence industry and technology. Modi and Prabowo agreed to further expand collaboration between the defence industries for joint production of equipment, technology transfer, technical assistance and capacity building. In their discussions on the West Asia situation, the leaders underlined the importance of de-escalation and reiterated that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. They also shared, according to the joint statement, the same view to respect freedom of navigation, global flow of commerce and the implementation of transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law including the provisions of UNCLOS. Modi said that resilience of technology supply chains holds massive significance, as the 2 countries signed crucial agreements in critical minerals and steel. “A new partnership is beginning between our companies concerning stainless steel and rare earth magnets,” said Modi, while also announcing an agreement for technology collaboration covering areas like AI, telecom, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). The PM announced an MoU for cooperation between the election commissions that he said would enhance “democratic cooperation” between the 2 countries, while lauding the synergy in India and Indonesia’s outlook towards the Indo-Pacific and the focus on ASEAN. “India has always accorded special importance to ASEAN Centrality. In this era of global turmoil, India firmly believes that the role of dialogue and diplomacy has become more critical than ever,” said the PM, adding that a golden era was knocking on the doors of both the countries. “We have a shared culture in our history, mutual trust in our present, and shared prosperity in our future,” he said. (AP Photo/PTI) PM Narendra Modi underlined the need for urgent UNSC reforms, backed freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific and urged greater cooperation against terrorism, as he addressed the lawmakers in the Indonesian Parliament Complex seeking inclusive development, accessible technology and just and representative global governance. Modi announced a Ganga-Mahakam vision for India-Indonesia ties, focused on civilisational connect, shared development, defence and security cooperation, maritime prosperity and Global South priorities. The bilateral meeting earlier in the day saw both sides reaffirming their commitment towards a free, open, transparent, rules-based and inclusive Indo-Pacific, underscoring the importance of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and adherence to international law, along with freedom of navigation and overflight. However, the latest joint statement issued after Modi-Prabowo meeting dropped an explicit mention of the South China Sea issue that featured in the January, 2025, joint declaration after Prabowo’s visit to India. Despite the maritime friction with China in the North Natuna Sea, Jakarta has avoided a confrontational approach to the issue choosing to prioritise economic cooperation with its largest trading partner. While thanking Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for standing solidly with India after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Modi said the 2 countries can further expand cooperation in intelligence-sharing, cyber threats, terrorist-funding and de-radicalisation to strengthen the hands of peaceful forces. Indonesia backed India’s zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, and both sides expressed support for an MoU on counterterrorism cooperation that they are considering signing soon. However, like in the past, the carefully worded joint statement did not use India’s preferred terminology of cross-border terrorism or name Pakistan, or terror groups active on its soil, while seeking action against globally proscribed terrorists. India’s recent joint statement with Japan had named Pakistan for its support to cross-border terrorism. However, Indonesia maintains close ties with Pakistan and – while strongly backing India’s security concerns – has avoided any hostile rhetoric that might lead to a diplomatic spat with Islamabad. In his address, the PM said that global order is changing rapidly and in such a situation, developing countries are seeking equal participation and a bigger role. “In this global space, it is clear that the UN Security Council cannot ignore reforms,” said the PM, as he stressed that India and Indonesia’s strategic trust will be a strong foundation for stability in the Indo-Pacific. “As two great maritime nations, we will transform our shared maritime geography into shared prosperity. From Sabang to Great Nicobar, from Malacca Gateway to the Indo-Pacific, we will create new opportunities for connectivity, logistics, blue economy, maritime security and trade resilience,” said Modi, as he outlined his vision for maritime prosperity. MEA secretary (east) Rudrendra Tandon later said that while 2 meetings have already taken place on the Sabang port development in Aceh, close to the Nicobar Islands, another meeting is likely to take place soon. He emphasised that Indonesia’s independent and active approach and India’s commitment to strategic autonomy provided a strong foundation for the 2 countries to stand together on global issues. Modi reiterated India’s position that it follows the policy of development, and not expansionism. “And that is why we say in India, together with all, development for all. Our capital may be thousands of kilometers away, but in the sea, the distance between us is only 150 kilometers. In other countries, the sea may be the cause of borders and distances, but between India and Indonesia, the sea is no longer a symbol of distance. The sea is a center between us. (PTI Photo)(PTI07_07_2026_000524B) JAMMU: Torrential rainfall triggered flash floods and mudslides in Thathri town of J&K’s Doda district early Tuesday, extensively damaging residential structures and roads, including portions of the Doda-Kishtwar highway, the region’s arterial link.Heavy showers lashed the town around 2.30am. “Thathri market suffered substantial damage, with several houses buried under boulders, mud and debris. Many vehicles were damaged or washed away,” said an official source, adding that nobody was injured.The national highway between Doda and Kishtwar (NH-244) was again blocked at multiple spots due to landslides, prompting authorities to suspend vehicular traffic on the second consecutive day. “Restoration teams have been pressed into service to clear the debris and restore traffic on the highway,” the source said.Doda Deputy Commissioner Krishan Lal said response teams had cleared a secondary hill slope in Thathri’s Prem Nagar area, removed debris on Bagna link road and Chiralla tehsil, and were focused on restoring NH-244.The district administration issued an advisory, urging citizens to remain calm and stay updated about official weather warnings. Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh, in an X post, stated that he was in touch with DC Lal regarding relief and restoration efforts. Representative image SRINAGAR: The high court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Tuesday rejected a Congress worker’s plea to shift his trial in a cheque bounce case to Jammu, saying he had no reason to feel threatened as terrorism had almost been eliminated in the Valley.“Militancy is almost negligible at present in Kashmir Valley and the situation since 1990 has transformed drastically,” a single bench of Justice Sanjay Dhar said, adding that the petitioner’s contention that he was still facing threat to his life in Kashmir was “improbable”.Thousands of political workers of various parties, who had fled the Valley in the 1990s because of terrorism, had returned in recent years and participated in the electoral process several times, the court pointed out.The petitioner, Sonaullah Dar, had sought the transfer of a complaint filed against him by Mukhtar Ahmad Gashroo under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act from a judicial magistrate’s court in Srinagar to a court of competent jurisdiction in Jammu. Dar had pleaded guilty in the case, following which the trial court directed him to pay the cheque amount to the complainant.In his petition, Dar stated that he migrated to Jammu along with his family after he was attacked by terrorists in early 1990s. Apart from citing terror threat, Dar said he was not in a position to travel to Srinagar due to his medical condition. He submitted documentary proof to back his claim that he is a registered migrant in Jammu.HC, however, rejected his claim, noting that in his statement recorded under section 251 of CrPC, the petitioner had mentioned he was a resident of Ratsun Beerwa in Budgam district, while the address mentioned in his petition was Christian Colony, Jammu. There was “overwhelming material on record of the trial court” to show that Dar had relocated to his original residence, HC said.“It appears the petitioner has filed the present transfer petition so as to avoid payment of the cheque amount to the respondent and to prolong the proceedings pending before the trial court,” Justice Dhar said, holding Dar’s petition to be “devoid of merit.”Get the latest India news and live updates.
