NEW DELHI: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Sunday pushed back against his successor Vijay’s claim that the state is facing a financial crisis, asserting that Tamil Nadu’s debt remains within permissible limits. In a congratulatory post on X, Stalin advised Vijay against beginning his tenure by claiming the government treasury was empty and disappointing the people who voted for him. Watch TN Political Crisis Deepens: Stalin Pushes Governor For Swift Action“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr Vijay, the leader of victorious Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, who has now taken on the esteemed role of chief minister of Tamil Nadu. I also welcome the announcements you signed immediately upon assuming office,” Stalin said.“Don’t start saying straight away that the government has no money. It’s all there. What’s needed is the will to give it to the people and the ability to govern,” he added.Stalin said his government had implemented several welfare schemes despite facing challenges such as the Covid pandemic, floods and what he described as neglect by the BJP-led Union government.“You have already mentioned in your first address the accusation that the previous government left behind a debt of Rs 10 lakh crore and emptied the treasury before departing. Tamil Nadu’s debt level is well within the permissible limits,” he said. The remarks came after Vijay announced that his government may release a white paper on the state’s finances to ensure transparency.“After reviewing everything, I intend to release a white paper to the people. I want my government to be a transparent government,” Vijay said in his first speech after taking oath as chief minister.“As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, if I need to meet someone, I will not do it secretly or behind closed doors. Whatever I do, I will do openly and transparently,” he added. Also read: TVK ends DMK-AIADMK era, actor-politician Vijay sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief ministerIn his speech, Vijay accused the previous DMK government of leaving behind a debt burden of more than Rs 10 lakh crore.“Today, the condition in which our Tamil Nadu government has been left is something I have seen for myself. The last government went out after borrowing debts of more than Rs 10 lakh crore. The treasury was completely emptied before they left office,” he said.“I am not saying this for effect. Only after going inside and seeing things firsthand can one understand what is there and what is not,” he added.Vijay also vowed not to misuse public money and said his government would prioritise education, roads, drinking water and other essential services.“Even if some people humiliate me, whether they are friends or enemies, all 8 crore people are still my people,” he said.“As I said before, I will not touch even a single paisa of the people’s money,” he added.Soon after taking oath, Vijay signed his first set of official documents approving 200 units of free power supply and constituting special task forces to tackle drugs and ensure women’s safety.Often referred to as “Thalapathy” by supporters, Vijay drew massive crowds during the election campaign, prompting comparisons with actor-turned-politician and former chief minister M G Ramachandran.Tamil Nadu has a long history of actors transitioning into politics, and Vijay’s rise has revived memories of that tradition following the late Vijayakanth’s political journey.Though TVK was formally launched only in 2024, Vijay had long been involved in social work and frequently addressed socio-political themes such as corruption and the drug menace through his films. In the 2026 assembly elections, Vijay won from both Perambur and Trichy East and is expected to vacate one of the two seats.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Image: PTI NEW DELHI: As Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP chief minister on Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti following a landslide mandate for the saffron party, the moment marked more than an electoral victory. In Bengal’s political memory, power shifts have often been shaped by short-lived political waves. The 2026 assembly outcome, however, reflected decades of groundwork by RSS and the gradual expansion of its social and organisational networks that helped reshape the state’s political landscape and power BJP’s electoral breakthrough.Sangh’s presence in Bengal long predates its electoral relevance. After Partition, it engaged in relief work among Hindu refugees from East Pakistan, particularly in border districts. This outreach embedded the organisation within local society through networks rooted in identity, displacement and community associations — spaces that later acquired political significance. The ideological foundation of this network can be traced to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951. His role during Partition events and death in 1953 allowed Sangh ecosystem to project him both as a Bengali icon and a national figure, lending continuity and local legitimacy to what later evolved into BJP’s Bengal strategy. For decades, however, Sangh’s influence remained largely social. The dominance of CPI(M)-led Left Front between 1977 and 2011 shaped a political culture centred on class mobilisation, leaving little room for identity-driven politics. BJP’s vote share remained marginal until quite recently— 4.06% in 2011 and 10.16% in 2016 — underscoring the gap between organisational presence and electoral outcomes. The shift began after Left’s decline. As Trinamool Congress consolidated power after 2011, it also inherited a fragmented opposition space. This created room for Sangh’s long-built networks to move into electoral politics. By 2021, BJP had emerged as the principal opposition party with over 38% vote share, marking the first major conversion of organisational depth into electoral strength.Much of this transformation, however, unfolded away from public attention. RSS organisers quietly worked across districts — from north Bengal to the western industrial belt — reconnecting with disaffected cadres, identifying local influencers and building booth-level linkages. This patient, years-long outreach gradually converted scattered support into a cohesive political force. The 2026 election marked a further consolidation of this shift. BJP’s vote share rose to around 45.8%, while Trinamool’s declined to about 40.8%, signalling that Sangh-backed ecosystem had matured into a decisive political force. At organisational level, RSS expanded its shakhas and local activities, strengthening booth-level mobilisation and sustaining engagement beyond elections. Simultaneously, the ecosystem localised its appeal through Bengali language, cultural symbols and regional references, reducing perceptions of being an external force. The campaign led by PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah built on these foundations. While identity-linked themes such as citizenship and border concerns remained central, 2026 campaign also foregrounded governance issues, including jobs, corruption, welfare delivery and women’s safety. Outreach to communities such as Matuas, alongside concerns around unemployment and governance, helped BJP expand beyond its traditional base among youth and women.About the AuthorManash Pratim GohainManash Pratim Gohain is a seasoned journalist with over two decades at The Times of India, where he has built a rich body of work spanning education policy, politics, and governance. CJI Surya Kant NEW DELHI: In a rare incident of direct pushback, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant denied a statement that was shared on social media as attributed to him.The CJI’s statement came as a social media account had falsely attributed to him the following remark, originally made in Hindi: “If a society, even after producing IAS, IPS, CJI, President, and PM from its ranks, still chooses to remain exploited, then the fault lies not with the Brahmins but with its own mentality.”Calling the situation “vile, brazen and mischievous”, the CJI, in a statement to PTI said, “To manufacture a fictitious quote, and to attribute it to the highest judicial office of the land, is an act of rank dishonesty, deliberate social incitement, and contempt for constitutional values.”“Such reckless conduct strikes at the very foundation of public trust in the judiciary and the rule of law,” he further added in his statement.Calling the claim fabricated, the statement said: “These attributions are wholly baseless, malicious, and demonstrably false.”It further urged caution against the spread of misinformation, saying: “The Office of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India calls upon all responsible citizens, media organisations, and social media platforms to refrain from amplifying false and contrived content.”About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
