Thane Police have registered a case against eight persons, including the owners and employees of a shipping company in Navi Mumbai. On Thursday, officials told PTI the accused allegedly duped 75 job aspirants of Rs 1.73 crore by promising lucrative jobs.According to a Kharghar police station official, the accused allegedly ran the operation from their office in the area, where job seekers were targeted with assurances of high-paying roles. They allegedly collected Rs 1,73,81,400 from the unsuspecting job seekers over the last two months, but failed to get them the promised employment, the officer shared.According to police, when the victims began seeking updates or refunds, communication from the company abruptly stopped.The victims claimed that when they reached out to the company for updates or refunds, the accused stopped responding and cut off all communication.A formal complaint was lodged on Monday by one of the victims, who also provided details of all 75 affected individuals and the amounts paid by each of them.Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR under sections 318 (cheating) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.No arrests have been made so far, the official said, adding that a probe is underway into the case.Get the latest India news and live updates. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann (File photo) NEW DELHI: Punjab finance minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday asserted that the individual seen in the alleged sacrilege video, which prompted the Akal Takht to issue an edict against Bhagwant Mann, was not the Punjab chief minister.Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Cheema cited reports from two forensic laboratories that, according to him, found that the person appearing in the video was someone other than Mann.”In these two lab reports, 1,191 different angles have been taken that show facial recognition, (Mann’s) height, body posture, how he walks, how he stands, all these postures. With 1,191 angles, a thorough analysis was undertaken,” the minister told reporters, PTI reported.”It shows that the fake video does not match Bhagwant Mann. The video was made using an actor to defame the chief minister,” he added.Cheema further said that the two forensic laboratories were independent institutions located outside Punjab and recognised by the Government of India. He accused the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of targeting Mann and alleged that the party had been attempting to defame the chief minister since discussions began on introducing an anti-sacrilege law.The finance minister’s remarks came days after the Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority of Sikhism, described Mann as “Guru Dokhi” (anti-Guru) and “Khalsa Panth Virodhi” (anti-Khalsa Panth) over a clip that purportedly showed a man resembling the chief minister.In January, the Akal Takht had summoned Mann over allegations that he made remarks about “Guru ki Golak” (gurdwara donation box) and engaged in “objectionable activities” involving images of the Sikh Gurus and slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in a purported video clip.Mann has repeatedly dismissed the video as “false propaganda” intended to tarnish his image.The controversy has surfaced less than a year before Punjab heads to the polls in February 2027. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP in Rajya Sabha Sanjay Raut NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP in Rajya Sabha Sanjay Raut on Thursday used cuss words against the rebel party MPs again after they skipped the key Parliamentary meet in the national capital.Raut’s fury came out after just three of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s nine Lok Sabha MPs turned up for the meet, fuelling speculation that a split in the Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit may be imminent. The sparse attendance came despite the party issuing a three-line whip mandating the presence of all its MPs.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Raut launched a scathing attack on the absent MPs, branding them as “traitors”, “dishonest” and “frauds”, and accusing them of betraying the party through their rebellion.This continues only a day after he unleashed a sharp attack on the defectors, even urging television channels and reporters not to censor the abusive terms he used against them, saying, “Don’t cut it, run it.” Defending his choice of words, he later said such expressions were commonly used in Maharashtra and insisted he knew when and where different language was appropriate.A split in the Shiv Sena (UBT) appears increasingly likely amid speculation that six of its nine Lok Sabha MPs, enough to constitute the two-thirds strength required for a separate group, are set to align with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, fuelling talk of “Operation Tiger”, a reported effort to engineer another major defection similar to the 2022 rebellion that split the party.Get the latest India news and live updates.
