‘Old’ explosive kills civilian in Baramulla SRINAGAR: A civilian was killed Saturday after coming into contact with an “old explosive object” that went off in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.The deceased was identified as Zubair Ahmad Bajjad, a resident of Chandoosa area near the Line of Control (LoC) where instances of old mines going off are sometimes reported. In this case, J&K police have not specified whether it was an old mine and said investigations were underway to determine the exact nature of the object.“A forensic examination of the scene has been conducted, and specialist teams are carrying out thorough sanitisation of the area as a precautionary measure to rule out presence of any other unexploded explosive material,” the police said in a statement.The area is in a remote Gujjar shelter in the upper reaches of Baramulla. ‘We’re working on for first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission this year’, says Isro chief V Narayanan NEW DELHI: Isro chairman V Narayanan said on Saturday that the country is preparing for the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, advancing Chandrayaan-4, a lunar sample return mission, and Chandrayaan-5, a joint long-duration mission with Japan involving a heavier rover.Delivering the 17th Air Chief Marshal L M Katre Memorial Lecture in Karnataka, Isro chief said, “We are now working on the first uncrewed mission this year. Then once we review the result, we’ll come back to the crewed mission.” He added, “Gaganyaan is a technology-intensive mission. We have to do the human-rating of the vehicle … before sending actual human beings, we have to do 3 uncrewed missions, and we are working towards the first uncrewed mission. You will come to know about the dates very shortly …”On the lunar missions, Narayanan said Chandrayaan-4 will be India’s first lunar sample return mission, while Chandrayaan-5, to be undertaken jointly with Japan, will deploy a 350-kg rover capable of operating for nearly 100 days, compared with the 25-kg rover and 14-day operational life of Chandrayaan-3. On India’s cryogenic engine programme, he said technology denial had ultimately strengthened indigenous capabilities. “Today, I thank the countries that denied us the technology. Today we have developed three cryogenic propulsion systems,” he said. Referring to the recent successful hot test of the semi-cryogenic engine power head test article (PHTA) at a thrust level of 175 tonnes, Narayanan said, “A test that was conducted, excluding the thrust chamber … we have taken close to 90% of the thrust load … it was a major achievement and milestone, and now we are getting ready for the engine test … satellites are ready, and we are working on that, an exact date will be provided soon …”Meanwhile, aerospace engineer N Jayan, who led the development of the indigenous CE20 cryogenic engine that powers India’s LVM3 heavy-lift launch vehicle, has been appointed director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC).Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s loyalist Dola Sen on Saturday lodged two police complaints against the rebel TMC MLAs, alleging “forgery of the party symbol and impersonation of the name All India Trinamool Congress.”This comes as the Ritabrata Banerjee-led breakaway TMC faction met Kolkata’s former councillors for the second time in a week.The complaints also referred to the “circulation of false documents/electronic communications” by the rebel camp and accused it of “holding unauthorised meetings”. The objective was to “strengthen the party’s support base in Kolkata after its assembly poll debacle, and in the run-up to the civic body elections” likely to take place later this year.“We are the real Trinamool Congress. We have the numbers and are the principal opposition in the state assembly. There can be no question about our legitimacy. We have constituted our national working committee and will soon announce our political programmes,” rebel TMC MLA and deputy leader of the party in the House, Sandipan Saha, said.The Bengal government dissolved the KMC board on June 8, leading all elected councillors, chairpersons, and members of the Mayor-in-Council to vacate their offices and transfer executive powers to an administrator, following Mayor Firhad Hakim’s resignation.Hakim, a former Mamata Banerjee confidant who is believed to have moved over to the rebel camp, was absent from Saturday’s meeting.“The rebel MLAs are more preoccupied with legal and organisational disputes than with the political battle. Mamata Banerjee personally created the TMC symbol, and the party’s electoral support is based on her leadership rather than individual leaders. The votes received by the party belong to Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, and any symbol endorsed by her would receive public support,” TMC MP Mahua Moitra, who remains loyal to Banerjee, said.“The mandate of over 2.6 crore voters in favour of Mamata Banerjee remains intact despite recent defections. The departure of some councillors, MLAs, or MPs does not diminish the party’s public mandate. NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that recurring examination paper leaks were the result of the Centre’s failure to fix the system and would continue for as long as the party remained in power.The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said repeated examination irregularities were putting the future of students and job aspirants at risk, days after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET (UG) 2026 examination over paper leak. Calling the issue a persistent failure of governance, Yadav said the government had failed to learn from previous incidents despite repeated controversies surrounding competitive examinations.”This is nothing new under this government. Issues regarding education, examinations, and paper leaks are recurring events; the government fails to learn from its mistakes, and the consequence is that our students and those preparing for exams are the ones who suffer,” Yadav said.Taking aim at the Centre’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat”, he questioned how the government expected to create employment while examination irregularities continued unabated.”The government speaks of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ but if paper leaks continue in this developed India, who will provide employment? This is a major question… as long as the BJP government remains in power, paper leaks will persist. There is only one party in the country creating this crisis: the BJP. The crisis will only be resolved when the BJP is removed from power,” he asserted.His remarks come in the wake of the NTA’s decision to cancel NEET (UG) 2026, which was held on 3 May, following allegations of a paper leak. The agency said the examination would be conducted again on dates to be announced later and added that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would carry out a comprehensive probe into the allegations.Earlier this week, Yadav also questioned the credibility of conducting the examination again, asking what assurance candidates had that the paper would not be leaked once more.In a post on X, he said, “The news has sparked immense anger and despair among millions of children and their family members against the BJP’s corrupt system.”The SP chief alleged that the examination system would remain vulnerable to paper leaks as long as the BJP was in office.”As long as the BJP government is there, exams will keep getting leaked; only after the BJP is gone will the examination system be set right,” Yadav said, describing the BJP government as a “failed government”.Separately on Saturday, Yadav also criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Mandir, questioning the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and asking why the state administration had failed to detect the alleged wrongdoing despite repeated visits by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Ayodhya.”The SIT report itself indicates that CCTV footage was tampered with. Was the Chief Minister setting a record for the number of visits to Ayodhya just to oversee ongoing theft? Why is it that, despite making so many visits, he remained unaware of the activities taking place within the temple complex?” he asked.He further argued that Ayodhya’s infrastructure did not meet international standards expected of a global pilgrimage destination.”The development and work carried out in Ayodhya fell short of expectations; a place visited by people from across the globe should feature world-class infrastructure, and the devotees arriving with faith deserve international-standard amenities,” Yadav said.Get the latest India news and live updates. The decision was taken at a special general meeting of the SGPC held at Teja Singh Samundri Hall in Amritsar NEW DELHI: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday endorsed the Akal Takht Sahib’s declaration of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann as ‘Guru Dokhi’ (anti-Gur) and ‘Khalsa Panth Virodhi’ (anti-Khalsa Panth), while announcing a large Panthic gathering on 5 July to mobilise support for the directive and initiate legal action against the Aam Aadmi Party leader.The decision was taken at a special general meeting of the SGPC held at Teja Singh Samundri Hall in Amritsar, attended by Sikh religious leaders, jathedars, representatives of the five Takhts and granthis of Sri Harmandar Sahib. The meeting was chaired by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami.The SGPC resolved to pursue legal action and register a police case against Mann, asserting that he no longer has the moral authority to continue as Punjab chief minister.The committee also announced that a major Panthic gathering would be held on 5 July at Gurdwara Manji Sahib Diwan Hall to make Sikhs aware of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s directive. It further resolved to launch extensive campaigns across every Assembly constituency and send preaching groups to encourage Sikhs to uphold the directive.Addressing the gathering, Akal Takht jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj said that Akal Takht Sahib is the supreme authority for Sikhs and obeying its directives is every Sikh’s duty.He also termed Mann’s challenge to the Akal Takht an affront to the institution.Gargajj alleged that governments were continuously attempting to gain direct control over Sikh institutions and called for unity among the Panth.Dhami alleged that the Punjab government’s agenda was aimed at targeting Panthic institutions.The SGPC also passed a resolution stating that the controversial video linked to the chief minister had caused widespread anger among Sikhs.”Rather than acknowledging his mistake before Akal Takht Sahib, the CM is repeatedly making false statements and disrespecting the highest temporal Sikh authority,” the resolution said.The resolution further emphasised that Akal Takht Sahib, established by Guru Hargobind Sahib, remains the supreme religious and Panthic authority of Sikhs, and that respecting its directives is the collective responsibility of the Sikh community.The controversy dates back to an edict issued by the Akal Takht on 15 June, when it declared Mann ‘Guru Dokhi’ and ‘Khalsa Panth Virodhi’ after claiming that a purported video showing a man resembling the chief minister engaging in acts deemed sacrilegious had been found to be “authentic” by two forensic laboratories.The issue originated earlier this year when the Akal Takht summoned Mann in January over his alleged remarks on ‘Guru ki Golak’ (gurdwara donation box) and over “objectionable activities” involving pictures of the Sikh Gurus and slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the purported video clip.Mann has consistently denied the allegations, reiterating that he was not the person seen in the video and claiming that the individual in the clip was wearing a mask resembling his face.Get the latest India news and live updates.
