Nick Jonas recalls ‘Frozen’ audition; says he “bombed” Kristoff role; singer jokes Jonathan Groff was better cast
Nick Jonas has revisited an audition that could have changed his connection with one of Disney’s biggest animated franchises. The singer and actor revealed that he once tried out for the role of Kristoff in ‘Frozen’.Nick Jonas discussed the experience during an episode of his Hey Jonas Podcast. He spoke with Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Idina Menzel, who are closely associated with the franchise. The audition did not turn out as Nick Jonas had hoped. He admitted that he arrived without knowing what song he would perform. The situation eventually left him struggling in front of the casting team.
Nick Jonas reveals he auditioned for ‘Frozen’
Nick Jonas recalled being considered for the role of Kristoff during the casting process for ‘Frozen’. He said the audition began with a question about the song he had prepared. “I auditioned for Frozen. I went in. For Kristoff. And I went in and they said, okay, what are you gonna be singing today? I said, oh, I don’t know. They said, what do you mean you don’t know? They’re like, do you have your sheet music?” Nick Jonas said he had not been told that he needed sheet music for the audition. That left him trying to choose a musical theatre song at short notice.
Nick Jonas admits he “bombed” the audition
The singer went on to explain how the audition unfolded after he realised he had not prepared the required material. “I said, no, no one told me I had. Okay, let’s, and so I just said, can you play something from- I don’t know what I said, some musical theater song, and I bombed the audition. It was terrible.” The cast members said: “That must have been why you didn’t get in.”

Although Jonathan Groff ultimately landed the role, Nick Jonas appeared to have no hard feelings about losing the part. He even joked that he could have brought something different to Kristoff. “I love Jonathan Groff, but I do think it would have been better to cast me. Like, this feels real. This feels, like, authentic. Massive fans in our household. I didn’t spite watch it. I really did enjoy it the first time,” said Nick. Jonathan Groff went on to become closely identified with Kristoff. He also reprised the character in the subsequent ‘Frozen’ projects.
‘Frozen’ introduced Kristoff to audiences in 2013
Released in 2013, ‘Frozen’ was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 fairy tale ‘The Snow Queen’. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee directed the movie. Jennifer Lee also wrote the screenplay. Kristen Bell voiced Anna, while Idina Menzel played Elsa. Jonathan Groff provided the voice of Kristoff, with Josh Gad voicing Olaf and Santino Fontana playing Hans. The popularity of ‘Frozen’ led to several additional projects. The franchise includes the short film ‘Frozen Fever’ and the featurette ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure’.‘Frozen 2’ followed in 2019 and continued the stories of Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven. A third feature-length movie, ‘Frozen 3’, is also in development.
