NEW DELHI: To address the grievance of accused facing long years of incarceration in UAPA and NDPS cases, SC Monday pushed for the establishment of additional exclusive special courts to speed up trials in NIA-investigated cases and those related to narcotic drugs registered by various police organisations.Additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati informed a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana that 14 additional exclusive NIA special courts have been designated in nine states following a series of SC orders and reminders by the Centre. The courts include three each in Gujarat and Jharkhand, two in Maharashtra and one each in J&K, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Assam and Punjab.The bench, however, expressed concern over only one NIA court in J&K handling 47 cases and asked the Union govt to consider establishing more special courts for expeditious completion of trials. Delhi is also in the process of designating three exclusive NIA courts to speed up hearings in 50 pending cases.On NDPS cases, the Centre informed the court that exclusive special courts across the country have increased from 77 to 113, but 394 are required based on inputs from states and UTs. West Bengal and Haryana accounted for 13 each among the 36 newly added courts.Govt said states and UTs have committed to establishing the remaining NDPS courts expeditiously in coordination with high courts. He argued that the development had wider constitutional implications, saying it had become “a national phenomenon” where MPs were joining the very parties they had contested elections against.The petition challenges the Speaker’s decision to recognise the merger, with the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention against the move.What we know so far?With the Speaker formally approving the merger, the strength of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Lok Sabha has come down to just three MPs, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s tally has risen from seven to 13 MPs.The party has now become the third-largest constituent of the NDA, after the BJP (239 MPs) and the TDP (16 MPs), overtaking Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which has 12 MPs.Reacting to the development, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said the six MPs joined his party to secure development for their constituencies and not for “personal gains”. Dismissing allegations that the lawmakers were induced to switch sides with money, Shinde said the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena needed to introspect on why its leaders were leaving the party. “These six MPs have joined us to ensure justice and development for the people who elected them. NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra took a dig at education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday, saying he probably does not know how to write a letter of resignation. The comment comes amid ongoing protests organised by Cockroach Janta Party demanding his resignation over NEET paper leaks.”Maybe just maybe the Education Minister doesn’t know how to write a letter of resignation. RSS only teaches you how to write mercy petitions,” she wrote on X.Her remarks came as CJP protesters continued their sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar a day after police used force to stop the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march towards Parliament. Despite heavy rain, tight security and Monday’s crackdown, volunteers remained at the protest site on Tuesday, cleaning the stage after police removed tents and other temporary structures. The stage canopy was left torn following the operation. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke apologised to supporters allegedly injured during the police action, particularly women protesters. In a post on X, he said, “I apologise to all our supporters, especially the girls who were brutally beaten up by male police officers. We could have done better.” Dipke also alleged that the government was willing to use force “to protect one Dharmendra Pradhan” and claimed the education minister was responsible for the deaths of more than 20 students. He urged injured protesters to contact him personally. Meanwhile, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said activist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike had entered its 24th day and reiterated the group’s demand that Pradhan resigns. The protests, which began on June 20, seek accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, reforms in the education system and the resignation of the Union education minister. Police used lathicharge and tear gas on Monday after protesters attempted to march towards Parliament, with both the protesters and the police blaming each other for the violence. We could have done better.” Dipke also alleged that the government was willing to use force “to protect one Dharmendra Pradhan” and claimed the education minister was responsible for the deaths of more than 20 students. He urged injured protesters to contact him personally. Meanwhile, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said activist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike had entered its 24th day and reiterated the group’s demand that Pradhan resigns. The protests, which began on June 20, seek accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, reforms in the education system and the resignation of the Union education minister. NEW DELHI: Union minister Kiren Rijiju Tuesday said PM Narendra Modi, during the NDA’s parliamentary party meeting, retierated government’s stance to ensure “stringent punishment” for those involved in the NEET paper leak.Rijiju, who is the minister of parliamentary affairs, said the Prime Minister stated that “NEET paper leak should not be an issue of partisan politics”. PM Modi, according to Rijiju, also said that “security and future of youth” is the government’s priority.The Prime Minister’s reaction comes in the backdrop of youth, led by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), protesting against the perpetual paper leaks, and alleged irregularities in the education system.The uproar over the NEET leak and lack of accountablity at the senior-most level exploded in the Captial on Monday as protestors, mostly students and youths, clashed with police — leading the cops to resort to lathi charge, firing of tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd marching towards the Parliament.The protestors had three main demands: Resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, discharging Sonam Wangchuk from hospital and providing compensation to the kin of NEET aspirants who died by suicide after the leak forced the government to reexamination.The Monday mayhemMany of those brought to both hospitals were discharged after receiving first aid.Officials at RML said that by 7 pm, the hospital’s surgery department had registered 65 medico-legal cases (MLCs) involving both protesters and police personnel. They added that detailed information on all cases was still being compiled.Hospital authorities also said around 10 MLCs involved people who had been on hunger strike. All of them were reported to be in stable condition.Sources at RML said nearly 40 of the injured brought to the hospital were police personnel, while the remaining patients were protesters. Around 35 people were admitted, with the rest treated and discharged. Between seven and eight patients required treatment in the hospital’s red zone because of the seriousness of their injuries.Among those admitted was a 20-year-old woman who suffered a hypoxic brain injury, a condition caused when the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen following severe trauma, hospital sources said.The exact circumstances in which she sustained her injuries remain unclear. According to hospital sources, she may have been injured during the clashes or after falling in the stampede that followed, but the sequence of events has not yet been established.Doctors said most of the remaining patients suffered bruises, baton injuries, head wounds and facial injuries, including split lips, forehead wounds and scalp lacerations. Although many had visible injuries to the head and face, no fractures were reported among patients treated at RML.At Lady Hardinge Medical College, at least 24 injured people were treated. Most were discharged after first aid, while those who arrived later in the evening continued to undergo medical evaluation.
