. NEW DELHI: The Crime data yet again brings into focus abuse faced by women within the confines of their homes and the growing crime against children. Crime against children marked a worrying increase of nearly 6% in 2024 when compared to 2023.NCRB data for 2024 shows that cases of “cruelty by husband and relatives” like every year, continued to top the list among crime against women accounting for over 1.20 lakh cases (27%). On the whole over 4.41 lakh cases of crime against women were registered during 2024, showing a decrease of 1.5% over 2023 (over 4.48 lakh cases).‘Kidnapping and abduction of women’ made up the second biggest category of crimes (67,829 cases, 15%) followed by ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act cases (67,809 cases, 15%) and ‘Assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’ (48,303 cases, 10.9%). There is speculation that the poll outcome is expected to pave the way for some sort of realignment within the bloc itself with two key allies TMC and DMK ousted from power in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.While BJP remains the key target of the INDIA bloc, whether new entrant TVK will be part of the alliance or not will also be a factor in how the power equations within the alliance – formed to challenge the BJP led NDA in Lok Sabha elections 2024 – take shape.In Kerala, stakes were high for the LDF right from the outset both from anti-incumbency and a poll that was seen as a referendum on Pinarayi Vijayan. Vijayan created history in 2021 as the first CM in the state to be re-elected after a full five-year term. Earlier to that, the state has had a four-decade-old tradition of alternating govts.In a high – pitched battle with a resurgent Congress led UDF, both sides crossed swords and engage in scathing attacks. BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s attempts to expand its footprint beyond traditional pockets also played a role in pushing the LDF to the ropes.In West Bengal, the CPI(M) which once led govt in the state for 34 years, was ahead in just one seat till late evening. In Assam, where the left parties – CPI(M), CPI and CPI(ML) fought as part of the Congress-led alliance, failed to open their account. In Tamil Nadu, where the left parties fought as part of the DMK-led alliance, they looked set to win four seats till late in the evening.Reflecting on the polls results, CPI(M) general secretary on behalf of the Polit Bureau of the party said, “the two major features of the assembly election results are the serious setback to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala and the victory of the BJP in West Bengal.”Alleging that in West Bengal, the BJP benefited from several factors, including the strong anti-incumbency against the “corrupt” TMC govt, Baby said, “even in such a polarised situation, the left could marginally improve its performance.”Refusing to see the poll outcome as a reflection on the growing irrelevance of Left, Baby agreed that despite having an organisational presence, impact was not getting converted to support in the electoral arena. “A little while ago, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” the ministry of defence said in a statement issued at 1.44 am on May 7, 2025.”Altogether, nine (9) sites have been targeted,” the statement added, while making it clear that no Pakistani military installations had been struck and that the operation was “focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature.”Today India marks one year of ‘Operation Sindoor’ and it is still seen as a defining moment in the country’s counter-terror doctrine, a swift military response launched after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Conducted in a rapid 25-minute window between 1.05 am and 1.30 am on May 7, the operation targeted terror infrastructure linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen.April 22: Pahalgam attack shocks nationThe chain of events began in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley on April 22, 2025. What is usually known as a scenic tourist meadow turned into the site of one of the deadliest terror attacks in Kashmir since Pulwama in 2019.Terrorists belonging to The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, entered a civilian area, allegedly separated victims based on religion, and killed 26 people, including a Nepali national. The attack triggered outrage across India and drew condemnation from world leaders.April 23-24: India downgrades ties with PakistanExternal affairs minister S Jaishankar, foreign secretary Vikram Misri and MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal briefed the media on New Delhi’s measures.India downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan, suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, sealed the Attari-Wagah border, declared Pakistani diplomats persona non grata, and suspended visas for Pakistani nationals. India also carried out naval missile tests and large-scale Indian Air Force drills.A day later, during a rally in Bihar’s Madhubani, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed action, saying, “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers.” Pakistan retaliated diplomatically by suspending visas for Indians, shutting its airspace to Indian-operated aircraft, halting trade, and suspending the Simla Agreement.April 27-30: War clouds gatherAddressing the nation during Mann Ki Baat on April 27, Modi said, “As I speak to you in Mann Ki Baat today, there is deep anguish in my heart. The terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 has pained every citizen of the country.” On April 30, Pakistan claimed India was preparing military action. Pakistan’s information minister Attaullah Tarar said Islamabad had “credible intelligence” that India intended to launch military operations within 24-36 hours. May 7: Operation Sindoor beginsIn the early hours of May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor from Indian soil, targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Mock drills were also conducted across several Indian cities, including Delhi, Chandigarh and Varanasi, to prepare civilians for any escalation.In the days that followed, India intercepted Pakistani drones across 36 locations stretching from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi later described the operation as a “new normal” and said India would continue to respond to terrorism “in a language they understand.”May 7-8: Pakistan’s drone offensive and India’s responsePakistan responded with drone strikes and heavy shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), triggering a sharp escalation in tensions between the two countries.On the night of May 7 and 8, Pakistan attempted multiple airspace violations across India’s western border and launched nearly 300-400 drones across 36 locations targeting military infrastructure. NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday targeted the government over the handling and aftermath of Operation Sindoor, claiming that despite India’s diplomatic outreach after the military action, Pakistan was not isolated globally as it had been after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.Taking to X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also launched a sharp critique of the government’s handling of the military operation and its diplomatic aftermath.”As we celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of Operation Sindoor and salute the achievements of our armed forces, it would be useful to recall the following: The first announcement of the cease fire that halted Operation Sindoor unexpectedly was made at 5:37 PM IST on May 10 2025 by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who claimed that it was intervention by President Trump that had made this possible,” Ramesh said on X.”Subsequently, the US President has repeated this claim over a hundred times in different countries without ever having been refuted even once by his good friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.Ramesh also referred to statements made by senior military officials after the operation. He said Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, speaking in Singapore on May 30, 2025, had stated that India suffered initial losses because of tactical errors but later carried out precision strikes deep inside Pakistan after reviewing and correcting those mistakes.He further recalled that on June 10, 2025, at a seminar in Jakarta, the Defence Attache at the Indian embassy in Indonesia acknowledged that India had lost aircraft on May 7, 2025 due to constraints imposed by the political leadership.Referring to another statement, Ramesh said Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt General Rahul Singh had, on July 4, 2025, highlighted China’s deep involvement in Pakistan’s response to Operation Sindoor through equipment, ammunition, satellite imagery and real-time targeting support.”Yet, the Modi Government’s calibrated capitulation to China continues unabated, including the loss of traditional patrolling rights in Ladakh, record Chinese imports, relaxation of FDI norms, etc.,” Ramesh alleged.”In spite of extensive diplomatic outreach by India, Pakistan did not get isolated as it had been following the Mumbai terror attack in November 2008. NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday targeted the government over the handling and aftermath of Operation Sindoor, claiming that despite India’s diplomatic outreach after the military action, Pakistan was not isolated globally as it had been after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.Taking to X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also launched a sharp critique of the government’s handling of the military operation and its diplomatic aftermath.”As we celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of Operation Sindoor and salute the achievements of our armed forces, it would be useful to recall the following: The first announcement of the cease fire that halted Operation Sindoor unexpectedly was made at 5:37 PM IST on May 10 2025 by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who claimed that it was intervention by President Trump that had made this possible,” Ramesh said on X.”Subsequently, the US President has repeated this claim over a hundred times in different countries without ever having been refuted even once by his good friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.Ramesh also referred to statements made by senior military officials after the operation. He said Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, speaking in Singapore on May 30, 2025, had stated that India suffered initial losses because of tactical errors but later carried out precision strikes deep inside Pakistan after reviewing and correcting those mistakes.He further recalled that on June 10, 2025, at a seminar in Jakarta, the Defence Attache at the Indian embassy in Indonesia acknowledged that India had lost aircraft on May 7, 2025 due to constraints imposed by the political leadership.Referring to another statement, Ramesh said Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt General Rahul Singh had, on July 4, 2025, highlighted China’s deep involvement in Pakistan’s response to Operation Sindoor through equipment, ammunition, satellite imagery and real-time targeting support.”Yet, the Modi Government’s calibrated capitulation to China continues unabated, including the loss of traditional patrolling rights in Ladakh, record Chinese imports, relaxation of FDI norms, etc.,” Ramesh alleged.”In spite of extensive diplomatic outreach by India, Pakistan did not get isolated as it had been following the Mumbai terror attack in November 2008. On the contrary, its army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has been embraced with extraordinary warmth by President Trump from June 2025 onwards and the world’s leading sponsor of cross-border terrorism, namely Pakistan, has come in for praise from the US military establishment,” he said.Ramesh also recalled that after the Kargil War ended in July 1999, the Vajpayee government had set up a four-member Kargil Review Committee headed by strategic affairs expert K. Subrahmanyam to examine the sequence of events and make recommendations.Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7, 2025 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. India carried out airstrikes on nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.The strikes led to a sharp escalation in tensions, with Pakistan launching retaliatory attacks that were largely thwarted by the Indian military. NEW DELHI: Cases of cybercrime jumped by nearly 18% from 86,420 in 2023 to 1,01,928 in 2024, with fraud emerging as the biggest motive, the NCRB report has revealed.According to the report, 73,987 cases of fraud — including financial frauds, computer-related offences and cheating — were registered across the country during the year, followed by cases related to sexual exploitation (3,190), extortion (2,488), causing disrepute (2,231) and personal revenge (1,850). Over 15,300 cases were marked under the ‘others’ category. Women were the victims in over 18,600 cases and in 1,753 cases the victims were minors.Telangana saw the highest number of such cases (27,230), marking a spike of nearly 50% over previous year, when 18,236 cyber offences were recorded in the state. More than 70 cases per one lakh population were recorded in Telangana. Karnataka (21,003) saw the secondhighest number of cases being registered, followed by UP and Maharashtra.Nearly 35,000 cases were registered in metropolitan cities in 2024, up from 34,000 in 2023 and 24,000 in 2022, the data showed.Combined with over one lakh pending cases from previous years, enforcement agencies faced the challenge of probing over two lakh cases in 2024, of which final reports were submitted in over 53,000 cases (31.9%), while alleged criminals were chargesheeted in nearly 25,000 cases.
