KOLKATA: The assembly poll verdict in Bengal triggered a spiral of violence across the state, leaving at least four people dead, dozens injured and party offices ransacked, as rival cadres from Trinamool Congress and BJP clashed in multiple districts overnight. TVK chief Vijay CHENNAI: Falling at least 10 seats short of the simple majority mark in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly to form govt, TVK president C Joseph Vijay has reached out to multiple parties, including allies of both DMK and AIADMK. Congress has sent positive signals to TVK, which on Tuesday staked claim to form the govt, reports Julie Mariappan. TVK’s tally of 108 seats will drop to 107 after Vijay resigns the Trichy East seat on Wednesday. Then, in the 233- member assembly, he needs the support of 117 MLAs. Sources said TVK intermediaries have reached out to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, besides Congress, which has five seats. VCK has two seats and PMK four. “TNCC will take a final decision on Vijay’s request,” Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said in Delhi. On Tuesday night, a majority of former PCC presidents, MLAs and MPs said Congress should back TVK provided Vijay didn’t include ‘communal forces of NDA’ in the pact. .Vijay wrote to Tamil Nadu governor RV Arlekar on Tuesday asking to be invited as the single largest party to form govt and to hold the swearing-in Thursday. Party sources said intermediaries have reached out to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss. The two parties have six seats. VCK, however, appeared wary. “Why should one leave one alliance for another? BJP won’t allow a Congress-backed govt,” a VCK politician said. TVK, with 108 members, is 10 short of a simple majority. Its tally will drop to 107 after Vijay resigns the Trichy East seat on Wednesday. Congress has five MLAs. The Left parties, which have two seats each, have not received any invitation. “Let us see after TVK’s decision. They have to take a stand,” CPI state secretary M Veerapandian said. Earlier, CPI, CPM, VCK, MDMK and IUML politicians met Stalin at DMK HQ where, DMK sources said, the allies reaffirmed their support. The AIADMK camp is also abuzz. After meeting AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, firsttime MLA Leema Rose Martin told reporters that talks between TVK and AIADMK were underway. “I think it will end positively. It is going on smoothly,” she said. On Tuesday night, a majority of former PCC presidents, MLAs and MPs said Congress should back TVK provided Vijay didn’t include ‘communal forces of NDA’ in the pact. .Vijay wrote to Tamil Nadu governor RV Arlekar on Tuesday asking to be invited as the single largest party to form govt and to hold the swearing-in Thursday. Party sources said intermediaries have reached out to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss. The two parties have six seats. VCK, however, appeared wary. “Why should one leave one alliance for another? BJP won’t allow a Congress-backed govt,” a VCK politician said. TVK, with 108 members, is 10 short of a simple majority. Its tally will drop to 107 after Vijay resigns the Trichy East seat on Wednesday. Congress has five MLAs. The Left parties, which have two seats each, have not received any invitation. “Let us see after TVK’s decision. They have to take a stand,” CPI state secretary M Veerapandian said. Earlier, CPI, CPM, VCK, MDMK and IUML politicians met Stalin at DMK HQ where, DMK sources said, the allies reaffirmed their support. The AIADMK camp is also abuzz. After meeting AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, firsttime MLA Leema Rose Martin told reporters that talks between TVK and AIADMK were underway. “I think it will end positively. It is going on smoothly,” she said. Less than 24 hours after BJP’s Bengal sweep – and shocking defeat of Mamata Banerjee in bastion Bhowanipore – a quieter, but equally symbolic, shift unfolded on the streets.The elaborate security grid that for years defined the approach to Didi’s home at 30B Harish Chatterjee Street in nearby Kalighat began to dissolve with striking speed. Along Harish Chatterjee Street, near Hazra crossing, metal scissor barricades that once carved the road into controlled corridors were dragged aside and stacked along the edges.The police personnel who regulated entry, stopping residents and passers-by for questioning, were conspicuously absent by morning.For locals, the transformation was immediate, almost disorienting. “We had to slow down, answer questions and carry Aadhaar cards. Relatives had to take detours and we often alerted the cops in advance about their arrival,” said a neighbour of Mamata.Tarun Chatterjee, another resident of the lane, rubbed his eyes in disbelief. “When I was passing by Didi’s house today, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The usual hustle and bustle were missing. Then I saw bikes and cars moving freely. As I drove past Mamata’s house, no one questioned me,” he said.Narrow alleys connecting Harish Chatterjee Street to Kalighat Road – long sealed off in the name of security – were also reopened, restoring routes that remained inaccessible for years. “It was difficult for us to enter our own homes because of the high-profile security. While we feel sad for our VVIP resident, we are also relieved,” said Sudip Karmakar, another resident.Not far away, security layers were peeled off outside the home of Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, who is TMC general secretary and MP. Police deployment was also scaled down outside Abhishek’s office on Camac Street in central Kolkata.The rollback of this security architecture, built since Mamata’s second term in 2016, came on the heels of a political upset few had anticipated.
