NEW DELHI: State-run Oil India Limited (OIL) Friday said it has reported the presence of natural gas in its third exploratory well in the Andaman shallow offshore block, further indicating hydrocarbon potential in the region.In a regulatory filing to stock exchanges, the company said natural gas was encountered in the exploratory well Vijayapuram-3, drilled 15 km off the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 metres in an offshore block under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP).“Initial production testing of the well at the depth of 1900 plus metres in the Eocene formation has established the presence of natural gas through continuous flaring. Post perforation, immediate pressure build up was observed and well started to produce,” it said. It added that gas sampling is being undertaken to assess its composition and calorific value and to carry out isotope studies to understand its genesis.With this, OIL has established the presence of hydrocarbons in two of the three wells in the Andaman offshore block. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who continued her tirade against the party brass Friday, denied any role in engineering a parliamentary split. “I contest allegations that I am trying to create a rift within the parliamentary party and trying to influence other MPs. I am in Kolkata and have not been to Delhi,” she said.Four Lok Sabha MPs — Abhishek, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Kalyan Banerjee and Mala Roy — attended the meet. Krishnanagar MP Mahua Mo-itra and Dum Dum MP Saugata Roy weren’t present but ha-ve thrown their weight behind Mamata, as has Bardhaman-Durgapur MP Kirti Azad.“Operation Lotus is BJP’s politics. They try to break parties using money power and threats. They have done it in Maharashtra and Bihar. We have to face it. Initially, it will be very disheartening, but if one can hold out, then we can absorb the immediate impact,” Saugata said.Murshidabad MP Abu Taher Khan said, “Irrespective of who is in control, I will toe the party line and do what the party asks me to do.”The remaining party MPs did not spell out their stance.Expelled first-time MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, who led the split in the party’s legislative wing and has since been named leader of the opposition in the assembly, said he hadn’t spoken to any MP in the past seven days and could not say what they would do. “Nobody can say what will happen tomorrow. NEW DELHI: On the eve of its much-touted NEET protest, newly minted online outfit Cockroach Janta Party is learnt to have approached Indian Youth Congress for coordination, even though the overture was not reciprocated by the latter.Sources said a key CJP figure met IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib at the latter’s office. While the details of their conversation are not known, IYC sources said the online party may have felt the need to understand the dynamics of protest and for organisational coordination to seek participation of IYC volunteers – which would also help it gain broader acceptability.When approached, Chib told TOI that IYC will not share the platform with any other outfit, adding that it is holding its own protests over the “serious” issue across the country and is focused on seeking accountability from Modi govt.Congress strategists view CJP with scepticism, with suspicion of a political hand behind its sudden emergence, as reported by TOI. Govt Friday urged Dhaka to expedite the verification process for suspected Bangladeshi illegal immigrants to facilitate their deportation to the country. The MEA said that asfar as deportation of these people is concerned, there is a bilateral mechanism in place. “We refer these cases to the Bangladesh side for them to verify the nationality of these people. Govt Friday urged Dhaka to expedite the verification process for suspected Bangladeshi illegal immigrants to facilitate their deportation to the country. The MEA said that asfar as deportation of these people is concerned, there is a bilateral mechanism in place. “We refer these cases to the Bangladesh side for them to verify the nationality of these people. NEW DELHI: Scientists have identified warning signals in the blood that can predict lung cancer more than five years before the disease is diagnosed, a breakthrough that could help tackle one of India’s deadliest cancers, where most patients are detected only at an advanced stage.The findings are particularly relevant for India, where lung cancer cases are projected to rise from about 63,700 in 2015 to more than 81,000 by 2025 and nearly 80-85% of patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Published in ‘Cell’, the study identified a 14-protein blood signature that predicted lung cancer risk a median of 5.6 years before diagnosis, potentially enabling earlier monitoring, screening and preventive interventions.Dr Abhishek Shankar, radiation oncologist at AIIMS Delhi, said the test should be viewed as a risk-assessment tool rather than a screening test. “The blood-based protein signature does not detect a tumour but identifies people at higher risk of developing lung cancer in future. Such people can then undergo more definitive screening. The finding is an important scientific advance because it opens the possibility of identifying high-risk individuals years before cancer develops and may eventually help guide preventive interventions. However, these protein signatures will need validation in Indian populations before they can be widely applied here,” he said.The researchers analysed blood samples and health data from over 48,000 participants in the UK Biobank and found a combination of 14 proteins, along with factors such as age, smoking history and chronic lung disease, predicted future lung cancer risk more accurately than existing models.The findings were validated across eight international cohorts involving more than 2,000 lung cancer cases.
