NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi is likely to come face to face with President Donald Trump at the G7 summit that France will host June 15-17, with both India and the US having confirmed the leaders’ participation in the meeting. However, while both sides are said to be looking at the possibility of an engagement on the margins, no meeting has been finalised yet.Modi is expected to have bilateral meetings with other G7 leaders too, including host Emmanuel Macron. Modi and Trump have not had a meeting since the former’s visit to the US in Feb 2025, weeks after the latter’s return to the White House.Ties went south soon after because of differences over a range of issues, including trade, India’s continued purchase of Russian oil and Trump’s repeated claims about having ended the India-Pakistan conflict last year.While some of those differences are yet to be entirely resolved, things seem to be improving with secretary of state Marco Rubio’s visit to India last month that saw him extending an invitation on behalf of Trump to Modi to visit the US. NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee for a meeting on June 19 to present his case against recognising a breakaway faction within the Mamata Banerjee-led party, as the Speaker weighs competing claims arising from a widening split in the TMC’s Lok Sabha ranks. The rebel lawmakers have reportedly sought recognition as the “real TMC” and have also held meetings with senior BJP leaders in New Delhi, deepening the political crisis confronting the party.Ahead of the rebels’ outreach to the Speaker, MPs Kirti Azad and Sagarika Ghose from the Mamata Banerjee camp delivered a hard copy of a letter written by Abhishek Banerjee to Birla. The letter, dated June 10 and previously sent via email, urged the Speaker not to recognise any separate faction within the party.”We went to him to deliver the hard copy. He wasn’t there, so we received an acknowledgement from his office. There is no provision in the Constitution for forming a separate group,” Azad said.In his letter, Abhishek Banerjee argued that reports suggesting a group of TMC MPs could seek recognition as an independent bloc were legally untenable and contrary to constitutional provisions.”The AITC is a single, indivisible political party. The legislative party in the Lok Sabha derives its very existence from, and remains an emanation of, the political party. There is in law only one AITC, one leader of the party in the House, and one Whip, all of whom hold office by authority of the political party and its competent organisational authority,” Banerjee wrote.”No member or set of members can, by their own volition, carve out a parallel ‘group’ or ‘faction’ of the same party and claim independent recognition within the House,” he added.Abhishek Banerjee also requested that the Trinamool Congress be given an opportunity to be heard before any decision is taken regarding claims by any group seeking recognition as the party’s legitimate representative in Parliament. File photo NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday defended his controversial remarks directed at suspected rebel party MPs, saying the expressions he used were part of common Marathi usage and that he knew “when and which language should be used.”Responding to criticism over his comments, Raut said that his remarks were not abusive in the context of Maharashtra’s political and social culture.”No abusive language. This is how it is used in Marathi. This is how it is used in Maharashtra. This is our regular language. The language that should be used should be used. The language that is understood should be used. And when and which language should be used, I know. I am the editor of the Saamna. I know the language,” he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.Raut questions criticism over his remarksRaut also questioned concerns about parliamentary decorum, arguing that wrongdoing should be punished. Referring to allegations of political defections, he said, “If someone is dishonest, what will you do with him? You will punish him. If someone is corrupt, he takes 15 crore rupees and leaves the party, what will you do with him? Will you punish him? Tell me.”Commenting on the ongoing speculation over internal dissent within Shiv Sena (UBT), Raut said the party would continue to resist any attempts to weaken it.”As long as they have the capacity to do this to us… we will keep fighting,” he said.Addressing questions on whether any MPs had formally communicated dissent, he added, “No one has officially communicated with us. Yes. We have called for a party meeting tomorrow. We have called everyone.”Clarifies meeting with Lok Sabha SpeakerRaut also sought to clarify reports regarding his interaction with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, saying he had only submitted a written representation concerning media reports suggesting a possible split in the party.”I just went to see the news that was coming. That someone is separating from our party and making a new one. This is wrong. So, I gave a letter to the Speaker. I have given a caveat. So, take care of the rules and regulations. Take care of the Supreme Court’s ruling. This time, the people of Maharashtra will not remain silent,” Raut had said.Raut also alleged that attempts were being made to engineer defections within the party and claimed that some MPs had been offered money to switch sides.He said a whip had been issued for a parliamentary party meeting and asserted that Shiv Sena (UBT) would continue fighting any effort to weaken the organisation.’Operation Tiger’ fuels Maharashtra political buzzThe remarks come amid intense political speculation in Maharashtra, where reports have suggested that a section of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs could join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.However, no official announcement regarding a split has been made.The political chatter has been dubbed “Operation Tiger”, with speculation that seven of the party’s nine MPs are in touch with the ruling Shiv Sena faction led by Shinde, who split from Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 along with a group of MLAs.Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam criticised Raut’s comments, saying they reflected the “collapse” of the Uddhav Thackeray-led party’s leadership.Party MP Anil Desai, however, backed Raut and said the remarks were merely slang and not directed at any particular individual.”Whatever is said, these are slang; it is not meant for anyone particularly. File photo NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday defended his controversial remarks directed at suspected rebel party MPs, saying the expressions he used were part of common Marathi usage and that he knew “when and which language should be used.”Responding to criticism over his comments, Raut said that his remarks were not abusive in the context of Maharashtra’s political and social culture.”No abusive language. This is how it is used in Marathi. This is how it is used in Maharashtra. This is our regular language. The language that should be used should be used. The language that is understood should be used. And when and which language should be used, I know. I am the editor of the Saamna. I know the language,” he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.Raut questions criticism over his remarksRaut also questioned concerns about parliamentary decorum, arguing that wrongdoing should be punished. Referring to allegations of political defections, he said, “If someone is dishonest, what will you do with him? You will punish him. If someone is corrupt, he takes 15 crore rupees and leaves the party, what will you do with him? Will you punish him? Tell me.”Commenting on the ongoing speculation over internal dissent within Shiv Sena (UBT), Raut said the party would continue to resist any attempts to weaken it.”As long as they have the capacity to do this to us… we will keep fighting,” he said.Addressing questions on whether any MPs had formally communicated dissent, he added, “No one has officially communicated with us. Yes. We have called for a party meeting tomorrow. We have called everyone.”Clarifies meeting with Lok Sabha SpeakerRaut also sought to clarify reports regarding his interaction with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, saying he had only submitted a written representation concerning media reports suggesting a possible split in the party.”I just went to see the news that was coming. That someone is separating from our party and making a new one. This is wrong. So, I gave a letter to the Speaker. I have given a caveat. So, take care of the rules and regulations. Take care of the Supreme Court’s ruling. This time, the people of Maharashtra will not remain silent,” Raut had said.Raut also alleged that attempts were being made to engineer defections within the party and claimed that some MPs had been offered money to switch sides.He said a whip had been issued for a parliamentary party meeting and asserted that Shiv Sena (UBT) would continue fighting any effort to weaken the organisation.’Operation Tiger’ fuels Maharashtra political buzzThe remarks come amid intense political speculation in Maharashtra, where reports have suggested that a section of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs could join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.However, no official announcement regarding a split has been made.The political chatter has been dubbed “Operation Tiger”, with speculation that seven of the party’s nine MPs are in touch with the ruling Shiv Sena faction led by Shinde, who split from Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 along with a group of MLAs.Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam criticised Raut’s comments, saying they reflected the “collapse” of the Uddhav Thackeray-led party’s leadership.Party MP Anil Desai, however, backed Raut and said the remarks were merely slang and not directed at any particular individual.”Whatever is said, these are slang; it is not meant for anyone particularly. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav (Photo credit: X/@Akhilesh Yadav) NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday dismissed Uttar Pradesh minister Om Prakash Rajbhar’s claim that his party was headed for a major split, accusing the BJP of having a history of engineering defections in opposition parties.Responding to Rajbhar’s “now it is UP’s turn” remarks, Akhilesh Yadav took a swipe saying, “Dana aur gana kab tak chalega yeh afsana (How long will this story of inducements and praise continue?).”The Samajwadi Party president said the BJP had repeatedly used splits and defections as a political strategy.”The BJP has done this before. It engineered splits in several parties. It poached Samajwadi Party MLAs, MLCs and even leaders who went to the Rajya Sabha. There are always people driven by greed and internal pulls, but the Samajwadi Party is fully prepared to face such challenges,” he said.Akhilesh maintained that despite political ups and downs, the SP remained a strong party.”The Samajwadi Party is a strong organisation. Like every political party, it has seen ups and downs in its journey, but we are prepared to challenge the BJP,” he said.His remarks came hours after Rajbhar claimed that the SP was on the verge of a “major split” and alleged that several party leaders were ready to join the BJP.In a post on X, Rajbhar claimed that senior SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav had submitted a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah, though he offered no evidence or details about the alleged communication.Rajbhar also alleged that investigations into the alleged mining and Gomti Riverfront scams had put the SP under pressure and claimed that “the entire SP is ready to join the BJP.”The SP rejected the suggestion of any internal crisis, with party MP Rajeev Rai mocking Rajbhar’s remarks.”I had said during the Lok Sabha elections in Ghosi that there is a disease called ‘bakbak-itis’ (excessive chatter). If there is no cure for it, are we responsible? Why do you take all three of them (father and sons) so seriously? K Annamalai NEW DELHI: After exiting BJP and launching his new movement ‘We the Leaders’, K Annamalai has taken another step forward, announcing plans to transform it into a political party by next month or July.The Tamil Nadu leader said the campaign is on the “right track” to become a political party.Pointing out that around 18 lakh people have already joined the organisation “without any expectations,” Annamalai said during a social media interaction that membership is growing both online and through direct contact with people on the ground.He said members have joined with the belief that the movement can bring major change. “after we start this movement as a political outfit, its activities will take on a different nature from this July and people are going to see it.”Claiming that the movement “will not fail, will not lie, and will not lead the people to the wrong path”, Annamalai said, “for us, we are equal to all religions and there is no second thought about that”.”Our aim in the coming months is that this membership drive will keep going”, he said. “As we move forward, our objective is to transform our organisation into a people’s movement to talk about the various issues in the state”.Raising concerns over several issues, especially the growing drug menace among youngsters in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai said the matter would be taken up as a mass movement at the grassroots level.He also said many technocrats and successful professionals are unsure how to enter politics. “Between 40 and 50 years of age, Tamil people, who have achieved a lot, across the globe including in US and London do not know how to enter politics here”.Annamalai further said that once the organisation becomes a political party, it will introduce a “term limit” for politicians. “Discarding the very old and bringing in new, it must keep happening”, he said.The movement has attracted major attention since Annamalai stepped away from all his responsibilities and posts in the BJP following the party’s poor performance in the recent assembly elections. K Annamalai NEW DELHI: After exiting BJP and launching his new movement ‘We the Leaders’, K Annamalai has taken another step forward, announcing plans to transform it into a political party by next month or July.The Tamil Nadu leader said the campaign is on the “right track” to become a political party.Pointing out that around 18 lakh people have already joined the organisation “without any expectations,” Annamalai said during a social media interaction that membership is growing both online and through direct contact with people on the ground.He said members have joined with the belief that the movement can bring major change. “after we start this movement as a political outfit, its activities will take on a different nature from this July and people are going to see it.”Claiming that the movement “will not fail, will not lie, and will not lead the people to the wrong path”, Annamalai said, “for us, we are equal to all religions and there is no second thought about that”.”Our aim in the coming months is that this membership drive will keep going”, he said. “As we move forward, our objective is to transform our organisation into a people’s movement to talk about the various issues in the state”.Raising concerns over several issues, especially the growing drug menace among youngsters in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai said the matter would be taken up as a mass movement at the grassroots level.He also said many technocrats and successful professionals are unsure how to enter politics. “Between 40 and 50 years of age, Tamil people, who have achieved a lot, across the globe including in US and London do not know how to enter politics here”.Annamalai further said that once the organisation becomes a political party, it will introduce a “term limit” for politicians. “Discarding the very old and bringing in new, it must keep happening”, he said.The movement has attracted major attention since Annamalai stepped away from all his responsibilities and posts in the BJP following the party’s poor performance in the recent assembly elections. Since then, he has positioned “We the Leaders” as a platform aimed at bringing fresh leadership and new ideas into Tamil Nadu politics.Get the latest India news and live updates.
